EC302.48 1
OBJECTIVES

On completion of this topic the student will be able to

• Understand the different types coupling networks.

• Know the advantages and disadvantages of the coupling

schemes.

EC302.48 2
Recap

• What is the need for multistage amplifiers?

• Mention the types of multistage amplifiers?

EC302.48 3
Need for coupling

• We must use suitable coupling network between two

stages so that a minimum loss of voltage occurs when

the signal passes through this network to the next stage.

• It does not allow the dc output voltage of one stage to

enter into input biasing circuit of next stage.

EC302.48 4
Types of coupling schemes

• Resistance – Capacitance coupling

• Transformer coupling

• Direct coupling

EC302.48 6
Advantages of R-C coupling

• Most convenient and least expensive.

• Simple and compact.

• Most widely used.

EC302.48 7
Applications of R-C coupling

• All audio small signal amplifiers used in record players

and tape recorders.

• Public address systems.

• Audio amplifiers used in Radio and Television receivers.

EC302.48 8
Transformer coupling

EC302.48 9
Advantages of Transformer coUpling :
• The dc resistance of the primary winding is
very low.

• Replacing collector load resistor by low

primary resistance eliminates the
unnecessary power loss in the resistor.

• Impedance match is provided.

EC302.48 10
Disadvantages of Transformer coupling:

• Increase in size as the transformer is bulky.

• It is costlier.

• Variation of voltage gain because of stray elements.

EC302.48 11
Direct coupling
• In certain applications, the signal voltages are of very

low frequency. For eg. Thermo-couple output.

• The amplifier used for amplification of such slowly

varying signals makes use of direct coupling.

• In this coupling, two stages are connected by a simple

connecting wire.
