EE-305-69 to 70 3
Gain and bandwidth of an amplifier

• Gain: The ratio of output electrical quantity to the

input electrical quantity

• Band width: The range of frequency over which the gain is

equal to or greater than 70.7% of the maximum
gain is known as bandwidth

• Frequency response:
Curve between voltage gain and frequency of an
amplifier

Frequency Ranges

• For the purpose of analysis we divide the entire

frequency range into three frequency ranges

• Low frequency range (<50Hz)

• Middle frequency range( 50 to 20KHz)

• High frequency range(> 20KHz)

Advantages Of RC Coupled Amplifier

• Excellent frequency response (uniform bandwidth over

a wide range of frequencies).

• Inexpensive (It employees resistors and capacitors

which are cheap).

• Very compact.

• It provides less frequency distortion.

EE-305-69 to 70 13
Disadvantages
• Low voltage and current gain.
• Tendency to become noisy with age, in moist climates.
• Impedance matching is poor.

Applications

• RC coupled amplifiers have excellent audio fidelity over a

wide range of frequency, used as a audio amplifier
(to amplify speech or music).

• Used as voltage amplifiers in the initial stages of public

address system.
