1B Chapter Review

STUDY GUIDE
Chapter 1B Test
Consists of 4 sections
– The first section is Making comparisons.
There will be 6 sentences where you will have
to fill in the blanks with either tanto, tanta,
tantos, tantas or tan.
– The second section is Saber and Conocer.
You will be given 10 items and you have to
write if Saber or Conocer should be used.
Chapter 1B Test
Format of test continued…
– For the third section you will still be choosing
between saber and conocer, this time however
you will have to conjugate them. You will be
reading 5 different short conversations and filling
in the blanks. Reading comprehension is
required.
– The fourth section deals with “Hace + time
expression” p. 58 of your textbook. All you
have to do is memorize the order of the
sentence to tell how long the students presented
have been participating in the extracurricular
activities presented.
MAKING COMPARISONS
You can download or view the power point on
making comparisons to review this. These are
some important point to remember:
“Tan” is used with ADJECTIVES to compare
people or things.
The order of the sentence is:
– conjugated verb + tan + adjective + como
– Laura es tan alta como Julia.
– ** notice how the verb comes before tan and needs to
be conjugated.

Tanto/tanta means “as much as”
Tantos/tantas means “as many as”
They agree in number and gender with the
noun that is being compared.
Order of the sentence:
– conjugated verb + tanto/a/os/as + noun + como
– Hay tantos libros como estudiantes en la clase.
To know which noun to use to match number
and gender look at the noun before “como”

La escuela tiene ______ estudiantes

The school has as many good students as
teachers.
Saber and Conocer
Both mean to know.
Are used in different situations.
Saber
Saber is used for knowing information, facts, or
knowing how to do something.
– Saber is used when an infinitive (non conjugated word
is used) because it indicates that someone knows
how to do something.
Yo sé hablar español. (I know how to speak Spanish)
– Saber is used when an interrogative word (question
word) follows it, because it has to do with knowing
information.
Sé quién es la maestra de español.
– I know who the Spanish teacher is.
CONOCER
Conocer is used when you know a person (have
met them or know them personally), place, or
being familiar with a thing.
– Yo conozco al presidente de Los Estados
Unidos.
I know* the president of the United States.
*have met him personally
If you see a personal “a” “al”, you use
conocer and NOT saber.

BEING FAMILIAR WITH THINGS
I can for example be familiar with
computers, I understand them because I
use them.
– Yo conozco las computadoras muy bien.(I
know the computers really well.)(I am familiar
with them).
– Yo sé de computadoras (I know about
computers.) (I know information about them).

Hace + Time expression
When you want to say for how long one
has been doing something, you use the
following sentence format: MEMORIZE!
Hace + time + que + conjugated verb
– Hace dos años que soy miembro de el club
de ajedrez.
– I have been a member of chess club for two
years.
Hace + time expression
Hace + time + que + conjugated verb
– How would you put the following in a complete
sentence to say how long the person has
been doing the following activity?
tocar el piano/Yo/ ocho meses/
Hace + time expression
Hace + time + que + conjugated verb
tocar el piano/Yo/ ocho meses/
Hace ocho meses que (yo) toco el piano.
– I have played the piano for eight months.

– To do well with this section, you have to


memorize the order of the sentence because
it is not like how we write it in English.
What if you want to ask the question of how long
someone has been doing something?

Example:
– ¿Cuánto tiempo hace que (tú) levantas
pesas?
– ¿Cuánto tiempo hace que (tú) estás en el
equipo de básquetbol?
