Importance of cables- Why cables are required?

To

ensure continuity of supply under all conditions, the high voltage feed to the traction substations is invariably arranged from two sources of power with underground cables, so that even if one source fails, the other remains in service. Suitable protective equipments are installed at the sub-stations to ensure rapid isolation of any fault in cables or sub-station equipment, so that the power supply for electric traction is maintained under all conditions.

The

power from Parkstreet sub-station is brought through 25kV cables up to Central Sectt. SSP. And then from Central Sectt. SSP outgoing feeders, it is fed to ROCS. A cable which supplies power to the ROCS (or flexible OHE wire) is known as a feeder. Generally, 25kV 240sq.mm copper cable is used for power feeding. The power cables are terminated on the conductor rail with the help of feeder clamps. To ensure electrical continuity, the parallel CRs are connected with copper cables long enough to accommodate the expected movement of the respective CR sections due to temperature variations.

How to select the cable type:

conductive material (copper or aluminium):

the choice depends on cost, dimension and weight requirements, resistance to corrosive environments(chemical reagents or oxidizing elements). In general, the carrying capacity of a copper conductor is about 30% greater than the carrying capacity of an aluminium conductor of the same cross section. An aluminium conductor of the same cross section has an electrical resistance about 60% higher and a weight half to one third lower than a copper conductor.

insulation material (none, PVC, XLPE-EPR): the insulation material affects the

maximum temperature under normal and short-circuit conditions and therefore the exploitation of the conductor cross section [see Chapter 2.4 Protection against short-circuit]. (bare conductor, single-core cable without sheath, single core cable with sheath, multi-core cable) is selected according to mechanical resistance, degree of insulation and difficulty of installation (bends, joints along the route, barriers...) required by the method of installation.

This

cable fits together with dead end clevis. The dead end clevis is connected to the tension insulator, which is connected to the turnbuckle through a two pin link. The turn buckle is then connected to the drop tube for anchoring through bracket for termination. It is 92 mm2 steel copper cable with 7/4.1mm construction. The core cable is in steel with a copper coating (thickness 0.25 mm). The 6 "surrounding" cables are made of copper. Safety Factor Achieved -32

What is return circuit ?

The

return current flows through the track in the vicinity of the rolling stock and then it goes to the RC through IBs. RC will be connected to the rails through Impedance Bonds (IBs) at every I-2 ITL. The two IBs of the UP and DN tracks at I-2 ITL locations will be interconnected by 2 x 240mm2 1.1kV Copper cables. the average catenary current for one track is 600A; the cables are having continuous current carrying capacity of 1100A.

Return circuit

21

3-May-12

Delhi Metro Rail Corporation Limited

The

return current from the feeding point (for example, CTST SSP, Line-6) will be taken back to the substation (transformer neutral) buried rail through traction return cables (Refer Fig.2). As the maximum return current under normal operation for 30MVA load will be 1200A, 4 numbers of 240 mm2 1.1kV Copper cables will be used for the traction return circuit. With a current carrying capacity of 400A for each cable (in buried conditions).

It

is as follows:Ensure RC & OPC clamps in bracket & TEW brackets are available before laying of Return conductor, Over head protection cable & Tunnel earth wire. Lay off the 200m of RC , OPC & TEW. Clamp the RC & OPC cable in the holding clamps placed above the number plate & clamp the TEW with the bracket. Tighten the bolts of RC& OPC clamp & TEW clamp. Continue with the RC, OPC & TEW wire laying until the next station.
