USING CPS FOR DATA DRIVEN INSTRUCTION

Ruth Durham, Instructional Technology Specialist

Manchester High School

DIAGNOSTIC PRE-ASSESSMENT
CPS can be used to gather data at any point during instruction. Lets find out whos here today and gather some information on where we stand with regards to data driven instruction and CPS.

GOALS FOR THIS SESSION

Review

the components of data driven instruction Discuss why proficiency with data driven instruction is essential for todays teacher Demonstration and discussion on how CPS can make data driven instruction easier and more effective

WHAT IS DATA DRIVEN INSTRUCTION?

Teachers collecting and analyzing data on student performance to inform instructional decisions Teachers using data to intervene as appropriate in order to facilitate continued learning Diagnostic- identify strengths, misconceptions and weaknesses to inform planning Formative- monitor student progress to adjust instruction Summative- evaluate student mastery of GPS

WHY IS DATA DRIVEN INSTRUCTION IMPORTANT TO TEACHERS?

Component of a standards based classroom Assessment of Student Learning is one of the five strands from CLASS Keys Assessment is one of the eight strands from School Keys Key piece of school improvement and increased student achievement Using data to drive instruction is an effective, research based, high impact practice Accountability and RTI

CPS AND ASSESSMENT AT MHS

Diagnostic-

Benchmark Testing Formative- Teacher created quizzes and questioning integrated into daily instruction Summative- Chapter, unit, and end of quarter tests

BENCHMARK TESTING AT MHS

Standards based assessment given in all content areas (Language Arts, Science, Social Studies, and Math) Administered 3 times each school year (Fall, Winter, Spring) Used to establish baseline data, monitor student progress, and as indicator for performance on high stakes assessment In-Depth item analysis informs planning

COMPARISON OF APPROACHES TO BENCHMARK TESTING

Paper and Pencil CPS

Answer sheets are consumable Each students test graded individually Item and standard analysis done by hand as a tedious process Data must be compiled and reports created

Preparation to set up tests ahead of time Teacher monitors student progress in real time Immediate grading Item and standard analysis is automatic Reports are easily generated

BENCHMARK RESPONSIBILITIES USING CPS

Teachers

Instructional Leaders

Prepare students for exams Administer exam Generate reports from CPS Email reports to instructional leaders Participate in meetings/discussions to review data Adjust instruction based on results

Prepare exams in CPS Train and support teachers to use CPS Assist with generating reports Compile data for teachers, courses, grade levels, etc. Lead teachers in discussions/meetings to analyze data Follow up with teachers to make sure data is indeed informing instructional practices

HOW CAN CPS BE USED FOR FORMATIVE ASSESSMENT?

Verbal

Questions (on the fly) Fast Grade lessons (prepared ahead of time) Opening a lesson Participation during a lesson Summarizing Review

WHY USE CPS FOR FORMATIVE ASSESSMENT?

Keeps

all students accountable and engaged Immediate results allow for responsive teaching Cuts down on paper work and hard copy assignments Saves teachers time Provides important documentation for the RTI process

CPS AND SUMMATIVE ASSESSMENT

How? Why?

Exam View tests Fast Grade lessons

Instant data Monitor student testing behavior in real time Engage multiple items Individual reports for parent conferences
