Geographical situation The port of Chabahar is located in the southeast of Iran and northern part of the Oman Sea at 251728N 603815E.

Climatic situation
IN general, the port of Chabahar is located in an area that has warm and humid summers and moderate winters.

operations
The master plan of the port of Chabahar was brought up in 1973 The executive operation of this port was started in 1981 and it became operational with the completion of four jetties in 1983. During the war between Iran and Iraq, the Iranian government noticed the important role of the port of Chabahar in Irans imports and exports, because of its unique characteristics such as being out of the gulf.

Geo-Strategic Importance
Geo-strategically very important. Can act as counterweight to Gwadar in Pakistan. India pushed Iran to construct port to mitigate Pakistan's influence in the area. On the hub of Iran gas pipelines. Near Afghanistan border and Pakistan border.

New road constructed from Herat in Afghanistan that leads to Chahbahar. Can take over significant trade from Central Asia. Can serve as an alternative to current NATO Supply Routes. Government of Iran has made Chahbahar a free trade zone. The port is free. Has potential for Industry also.

Indian interest
TEHRAN (FNA)- Senior Indian officials arrived in Tehran to finalize a joint working group on the Chabahar Port project, which includes construction of a strategic railway.

Indian intrest
Making investments in the Chabahar Port on the Sistan-Balouchestan province in Iran will give leverage to India in the region and by making it as an important transit link it will give India an access to Afghanistan, Central Asia and Eurasia thereby reducing the landlocked Kabuls utter dependence on Pakistan. The Chabahar Port project is set to bypass Islamabad.

Indias shipping secretary K Mohandas is in Tehran push the plans ahead. The Mohandasled delegation is the first such high-level team visiting Iran over the port in a while. His visit will conclude on November 30

Indian interest
Iran believes that this port collaboration between Delhi and Tehran is the minimum that is necessary between the two countries for the development of the people and the region. Chabahar could be a multimodal link port as the Chabahar-Bam link will help in establishing link to Russia via Iran.

Indian strategic presence


India is finalising a plan to construct a 900-km railway line that will connect Chabahar port in Iran, being built with Indian help, to the mineral-rich Hajigak region of Afghanistan, the Hindustan Times said on Tuesday.

Strategic importance
this line will throw up both tantalizing geopolitical and economic opportunities for India as well as potential for bad blood with both friends and foes.
