PHONICS APPROACH

Noor Azmilia Binti Aziz PISMP PK 3

Phonics analysis or phonics refers to using the sound of letters as word identification clues. Phonics analysis focuses on the relationship between phonemes (speech sound) and graphemes (letter symbols used in written language).

Phonics refers to a method for teaching students of English to read and write that language.

Phonics involves teaching how to connect the sounds of spoken english with letters or groups of letters (e.g., that the sound /k/ can be represented by c, k, ck, ch, or q spellings) and teaching them to blend the sounds of letters together to produce approximate pronunciations of unknown words.

Decoding phonetics approach

Decoding using a phonetic approach to reading instruction is based on teaching children (or letting them self discover) the 44 language sounds (phonemes) which represent 26 alphabet letters and combinations (grapehems). Phonetic approach differ widely, most users believe that when children know which sounds are represented by which letters or letter combinations, they can attack an unknown word and decode it. Some approaches begin decoding sessions when all sounds have been learned, others expose children to select sounds and offer easily decoded word early. A few phonetic approach systems require teachers to use letter sounds exclusively & letter introduce the individual letter names.

Five words attack (or decoding) skills are helpful in the complicated process of learning to read.
