FIRST AID PARTY GETS READY AND STAND BY IDENTIFY THE ZONE OF FIRE (FROM THE FIRE DETECTION PANEL) IDENTIFY THE TYPE OF FIRE OR THE POSSIBILITY- CLASS C OR CLASS A SHUT ALL THE VENTILATORS, AIR-CON, DAMPERS, FIRE DOORS AND ANY OTHER OPENINGS PROCEED TO THE ZONE OF FIRE. ENTER WITH A WATER HOSE UNDER PRESSURE. USE WATER SPRAY AS A SHIELD IF NECESSARY WHEN ENTERING IF A POSSIBILITY OF FIRE IS SUSPECTED INSIDE A CABIN, FEEL THE DOOR WITH THE BACK OF THE PALM. IF HOT FIRE IS NOT DEAD. ONCE FIRE IS EXTINGUISHED IT MUST BE REPORTED TO THE BRIDGE FIRE WATCH IS MAINTAINED AND THE CAUSE IS INVESTIGATED

CARGO HOLD FIRE


WHEN THE FIRE ALARM IS SOUNDED RUSH TO THE MUSTER STATION HEAD COUNT IS CARRIED OUT AND ANY MISSING PERSON MUST BE DETERMINED REPORT TO THE BRIDGE AND AWAIT FOR THE ORDERS FROM THE MASTER FIRE FIGHTING PARTY TO DON THE FIRE FIGHTERS OUTFIT AND BA SET THE BACK-UP PARTY STANDBY WITH THE FIRE FIGHTERS OUTFIT AND THE BA SET FIRST AID PARTY GETS READY AND STAND BY THE MASTER THEN CHECKS THE DANGEROUS GOODS STOWAGE PLANS & CHECKS IF ANY DANGEROUS CARGO IN THE HOLD IF DANGEROUS CARGO IS PRESENT THEN THE MASTER IDENTIFIES THE TYPE OF CARGO AND CHECKS THE IMDG CODE FOR THE TYPE OF FIRE FIGHTING MEASURES TO BE TAKEN

IF DANGEROUS CARGO IS PRESENT THEN THE TEAM SHOULD WEAR THE CHEMICAL SUIT ALL VENTILATORS, BOOBY HATCH COVERS AND CARGO HOLD FANS ARE SHUT FIRE FIGHTING TEAM THEN PROCEEDS TO THE CARGO HOLD, WHILE THE BACK-UP TEAM CARRIES OUT BOUNDARY COOLING IF CO2 TO BE USED,AGAIN THIS SHOULD BE THE LAST RESORT IF ANY PERSON IS SUSPECTED TO BE INSIDE ONCE THE FIRE IS SUSPECTED TO BE EXTINGUISHED, ENTER THE HOLD AND CONFIRM VISUALLY WHEN ENTERING THE HOLD DURING OR AFTER EXTINGUISHING A LIFE-LINE MUST BE ATTACHED TO THE PERSONS ENTERING FINALLY THE CAUSE OF FIRE TO BE INVESTIGATED

PAINT ROOM FIRE


WHEN THE FIRE ALARM IS SOUNDED, RUSH TO THE MUSTER STATION HEAD COUNT IS CARRIED OUT AND ANY MISSING PERSON MUST BE DETERMINED REPORT TO THE BRIDGE AND AWAIT FOR ORDERS FROM THE MASTER FIRE FIGHTING PARTY TO DON THE FIRE FIGHTERS OUTFIT AND BA SET THE BACK-UP PARTY STANDBY WITH THE FIRE FIGHTERS OUTFIT AND THE BA SET FIRST AID PARTY GETS READY AND STAND BY PAINT ROOM OPENINGS ARE SHUT WATER SPRINKLER IS ACTIVATED BY OPENING THE SPRINKLER VALVE LOCATED OUTSIDE THE PAINT ROOM FIRE FIGHTING PARTY APPLIES BOUNDARY COOLING ONCE FIRE IS PUT OUT IT MUST BE REPORTED TO BRIDGE FIRE WATCH IS MAINTAINED & THE CAUSE INVESTIGATED

FFA REQUIREMENT AS PER SAFETY CONVENTION REGULATIONS


EVERY SHIP SHALL BE PROVIDED WITH FIRE PUMPS, FIRE MAINS, HYDRANTS AND HOSES. SHIPS SHALL BE PROVIDED WITH INDEPENDENTLY DRIVEN FIRE PUMPS AS FOLLOWS: PASSENGER SHIPS OF 4000GRT AND UPWARDS PASSENGER SHIPS OF LESS THAN 4000GRT AND CARGO SHIPS OF 1000GRT AND UPWARDS CARGO SHIPS OF LESS THAN 1000GRT AT LEAST 3

AT LEAST 2

AT LEAST 2 POWER-DRIVEN, 1 OF WHICH SHALL BE INDEPENDENTLY DRIVEN

DIAMETER OF THE FIRE MAINS SHALL BE SUFFICIENT FOR THE EFFECTIVE DISTRIBUTION OF THE MAXIMUM REQUIRED DISCHARGE FROM THE TWO FIRE PUMPS OPERATING SIMULTANEOUSLY, EXCEPT IN THE CASE OF CARGO SHIPS WHERE THE DIAMETER NEED ONLY BE SUFFICIENT FOR THE DISCHARGE OF 140m/h. THE NUMBER AND POSITION OF HYDRANTS SHALL BE SUCH THAT AT LEAST TWO JETS OF WATER NOT EMANATING FROM THE SAME HYDRANT, ONE OF WHICH SHALL BE FROM A SINGLE LENGTH OF HOSE, MAY REACH ANY PART OF THE SHIP NORMALLY ACCESSIBLE TO THE PASSENGERS OR CREW. IN PASSENGER SHIPS THERE SHALL BE AT LEAST ONE FIRE HOSE FOR EACH OF THE HYDRANTS. THESE SHALL BE USED ONLY FOR THE PURPOSE OF EXTINGUISHING FIRES OR TESTING DURING FIRE DRILLS AND SURVEYS.

IN CARGO SHIPS OF 1000GRT AND UPWARDS THE NUMBER OF FIRE HOSES TO BE PROVIDED SHALL BE ONE FOR EACH 30M LENGTH OF THE SHIP AND ONE SPARE BUT IN NO CASE LESS THAN FIVE IN ALL. THIS NUMBER DOES NOT INCLUDE ANY HOSES REQUIRED IN ANY ENGINE OR BOILER ROOM. IN CARGO SHIPS OF LESS THAN 1000GRT THE NUMBER OF FIRE HOSES SHALL BE TO THE SATISFACTION OF THE ADMINISTRATION. IN ADDITION SHIPS CARRYING DANGEROUS CARGO SHALL BE PROVIDED 3 HOSES AND NOZZLES. EACH FIRE HOSE SHALL BE PROVIDED WITH A NOZZLE AND THE NECESSARY COUPLINGS

INTERNATIONAL SHORE CONNECTION


SHIPS OF 500GRT AND UPWARDS SHALL CARRY AT LEAST ONE INTERNATIONAL SHORE CONNECTION. USED ON EITHER SIDE OF THE SHIP. IT IS KEPT ONBOARD ALONG WITH A GASKET FOR 1N/mm, TOGETHER WITH FOUR 16mm BOLTS, 50mm IN LENGTH AND 8 WASHERS.

FIXED FIRE EXTINGUISHING SYSTEMS


FIXED FIRE EXTINGUISHING SYSTEMS INCLUDE:
A FIXED HIGH-EXPANSION FOAM FIRE EXTINGUISHING SYSTEM A FIXED PRESSURE WATER SPRAYING FIRE EXTINGUISHING SYSTEM

FIXED GAS FIRE EXTINGUISHING SYSTEMS


THE NECESSARY PIPES FOR CONVEYING FIRE EXTINGUISHING MEDIUM INTO PROTECTED SPACES SHALL BE PROVIDED WITH CONTROL VALVES MARKED SO AS TO INDICATE THE SPACES TO WHICH THE PIPES ARE LED. MEANS SHALL BE GIVEN FOR AUTOMATICALLY GIVING AUDIBLE WARNING OF THE RELEASE OF FIRE EXTINGUISHING MEDIUM INTO ANY SPACE IN WHICH PERSONNEL NORMALLY WORK OR TO WHICH THEY HAVE ACCESS. AUTOMATIC RELEASE OF FIRE EXTINGUISHING MEDIUM IS NOT ALLOWED. e.g. CARBON DIOXIDE SYSTEMS MACHINERY SPACES INERT GAS SYSTEMS CARGO TANKS

PASSENGER SHIPS OF >36 PAX SHALL BE EQUIPPED WITH AUTOMATIC SPRINKLER SYSTEM IN ALL CONTROL STATIONS, CORRIDORS AND STAIRWAYS PASSENGER SHIPS OF < 36 PAX AUTOMATIC SPRINKLER SYSTEM SHALL BE PLACED IN THE CORRIDORS, STAIRWAYS, ETC WITHIN ACCOMODATION SPACES ACCCORDING TO THE REQUIREMENTS OF THE ADMINISTRATION CARGO SHIPS SHALL BE PROVIDED WITH FIXED FIRE FIGHTING SYSTEMS IN CARGO SPACES, PUMP-ROOM, GALLEY AND MACHINERY SPACE

FIRE FIGHTERS OUTFITS


FIRE FIGHTERS OUTFIT SHALL COMPLY WITH THE REQUIREMENTS OF THE FIRE SAFETY SYSTEM CODE. ALL SHIPS SHALL CARRY AT LEAST TWO FIRE FIGHTERS OUTFIT. IN ADDITION:
PASSENGER SHIPS FOR EVERY 80m, TWO OUTFITS AND TWO PERSONAL EQUIPMENT PASSENGER SHIPS >36 PAX, TWO FIRE FIGHTING OUTFITS FOR EACH MAIN VERTICAL ZONE TANKERS, TWO FIRE FIGHTERS OUTFITS CARGO SHIPS & PASSENGER SHIPS >36 PAX, TWO SPARE CHARGES FOR EACH BA, OR ONE SPARE CHARGE IF CAPABLE OF BEING RECHARGED AT SEA FOR CARGO SHIPS AND PASSENGER SHIPS <36 PAX

EMERGENCY ESCAPE BREATHING DEVICES


EEBD CAN BE USED TO HELP ESCAPE FROM A SPACE WHICH IS FILLED WITH SMOKE OR TOXIC GASES. IT IS LOCATED WHERE IT IS ACCESSIBLE TO ALL. SHIPS NEED TO CARRY THE FOLLOWING NUMBER OF EEBDS: ALL SHIPS AT LEAST 2 EEBD WITHIN ACCOMMODATION IN PASSENGER SHIPS AT LEAST TWO EEBD IN EACH MAIN VERTICAL ZONE ADDITIONAL TWO EEBD FOR PASSENGER SHIPS >36 PAX

FIXED FIRE DETECTION & ALARM SYSTEMS


THE PURPOSE OF THIS IS TO DETECT ANY FIRE IN THE SPACE OF ORIGIN AND TO PROVIDE ALARM FOR SAFE ESCAPE AND FIRE FIGHTING ACTIVITY. FOR THIS PURPOSE THE FOLLOWING REQUIREMENTS SHALL BE MET: FIXED FIRE DETECTION AND ALARM SYSTEMS SHALL BE SUITABLE FOR THE NATURE OF THE SPACE, FIRE GROWTH POTENTIAL AND POTENTIAL GENERATION OF SMOKE & GASES MANUALLY OPERATED CALL POINTS SHALL BE PLACED EFFECTIVELY TO ENSURE A READILY ACCESSIBLE MEANS OF NOTIFICATION FIRE PATROLS SHALL PROVIDE AN EFFECTIVE MEANS OF DETECTING AND LOCATING FIRES & ALERTING THE NAVIGATION BRIDGE & TEAMS

SMOKE DETECTORS SHALL BE INSTALLED IN ACCOMODATION SPACES, ESCAPE ROUTES, ETC PASSENGER SHIPS >36 PAX - FIXED FIRE DETECION & ALARM SYSTEMS SHALL BE INSTALLED IN ACCOMODATION SPACES, SERVICE SPACES, CONTROL STATIONS, ETC EXCEPT IN BATHROOMS, PUBLIC TOILETS, CO ROOMS PASSENGER SHIPS <36 PAX - FIXED IN EACH SEPARATE ZONE, ACCOMODATION SPACES, SERVICE SPACES CARGO SHIPS - SMOKE DETECTORS IN ALL CORRIDORS, STAIRWAYS, ESCAPE ROUTES WITHIN ACCOMODATION SPACES. AUTOMATIC SPRINKLER & FIRE ALARM SYSTEM WITHIN GALLEY, ENGINE ROOM, ETC. SMOKE DETECTION SHALL BE FIXED IN CARGO SPACES

PORTABLE FIRE EXTINGUISHERS


THESE SHALL COMPLY WITH THE REQUIREMENTS OF THE FIRE SAFETY SYSTEM CODE. ACCOMODATION SPACES, SERVICE SPACES & CONTROL STATIONS SHALL BE PROVIDED WITH PORTABLE FIRE EXTINGUISHERS OF APPROPRIATE TYPE AND IN SUFFICIENT NUMBER REQUIRED BY THE ADMINISTRATION. SHIPS >1000GRT SHALL CARRY AT LEAST 5 PORTABLE EXTINGUISHERS THESE EXTINGUISHERS SHALL BE PLACED AT THE ENTRANCE OF THE PLACE WHERE IT IS INTENDED TO USE CO2 EXTINGUISHERS SHALL NOT BE PLACED IN ACCOMODATION SPACES. IN CONTROL STATIONS AND OTHER SPACES WHERE THERE ARE ELECTRICAL EQUIPMENTS NECESSARY FOR THE SAFETY OF SHIP, EXTINGUISHERS SHALL BE PROVIDED WHICH ARE NOT ELECTRICALLY CONDUCTIVE OR HARMFUL TO THE EQUIPMENT

PORTABLE EXTINGUISHERS SHALL BE PROVIDED WITH DEVICE WHICH INDICATES WHETHER THEY HAVE BEEN USED OR NOT THERE SHALL BE ONE PORTABLE FOAM APPLICATOR UNIT AT THE ENTRANCE OUTSIDE OR IN THE BOILER ROOM. THERE SHALL BE AT LEAST TWO SIMILAR EXTINGUISHERS OR EQUIVALENT IN EACH FIRING SPACE IN THE BOILER ROOM. THESE EXTINGUISHERS SHALL BE PROVIDED WITH HOSES ON REELS THERE SHALL BE SUFFICIENT FOAM TYPE EXTINGUISHERS OF AT LEAST 45 LITRES OR EQUIVALENT TO BE DIRECTED ONTO ANY PART OF LUBE OIL PRESSURE SYSTEMS, GEARING OR OTHER FIRE HAZARDS IN ADDITION THERE SHALL BE SUFFICIENT NUMBER OF PORTABLE FOAM OR EQUIVALENT EXTINGUISHERS WITHIN MACHINERY SPACE SO PLACED THAT NO POINT IN THE SPACE IS MORE THAN 10m WALKING DISTANCE FROM AN EXTINGUISHER PORTABLE EXTINGUISHERS OF 12kg OF DRY POWDER SHALL BE PROVIDED IN THE CARGO HOLD SPACES. PORTABLE EXTINGUISHERS SHALL BE PROVIDED AT EACH DECK LEVEL IN EACH HOLD, SPACE NOT MORE THAN 20m APART ON BOTH SIDES OF THE SPACE

ROUTINE CHECKS & MAINTENANCE


FIRE FIGHTING SYSTEMS AND APPLIANCES SHALL BE KEPT IN GOOD WORKING ORDER & READILY AVAILABLE FOR IMMEDIATE USE. PORTABLE EXTINGUISHERS WHICH HAVE BEEN DISCHARGED SHOULD BE IMMEDIATELY RECHARGED OR REPLACED WITH AN EQUIVALENT UNIT MAINTENANCE, TESTING AND INSPECTIONS SHALL BE CARRIED OUT BASED ON THE GUIDELINES DEVELOPED BY THE ORGANIZATION AND IN A MANNER HAVING DUE REGARD TO ENSURING THE RELIABILITY OF FIRE FIGHTING SYSTEMS AND APPLIANCES. THE MAINTENANCE PLAN SHALL BE KEPT ON BOARD. IT SHALL INCLUDE AT LEAST THE FOLLOWING FFA AND SYSTEMS: FIRE MAINS, FIRE PUMPS AND HYDRANTS, INCLUDING HOSES, NOZZLES AND INTERNATIONAL SHORE CONNECTION

FIXED FIRE DETECTION AND FIRE ALARM SYSTEMS FIXED FIRE EXTINGUISHING SYSTEMS & FFA AUTOMATIC SPRINKLERS, FIRE DETECTION AND FIRE ALARMS VENTILATION SYSTEMS, INCLUDING FIRE AND SMOKE DAMPERS, FANS & THEIR CONTROLS EMERGENCY SHUTDOWN OF FUEL FIRE DOORS, INCLUDING THEIR CONTROLS EEBD PORTABLE FIRE EXTINGUISHERS, INCLUDING BA SETS AND SPARE BOTTLES FIRE FIGHTERS OUTFIT CHEMICAL SUITS

CHECKS ON FIRE DETECTION SYSTEMS


THE MAINTENANCE SHOULD INCLUDE TESTING: SMOKE DETECTORS USING THE SMOKE SPRAY CANISTERS INFRA FLAME DETECTORS USING TORCH LIGHT OR CIGARETTE LIGHTERS HEAT DETECTORS USING HAIR DRYERS TESTING THE SYSTEM TO ENSURE IT IS FUNCTIONING NORMALLLY

CHECKS ON CO2 SYSTEM


CHECK THE LEVEL OF CO2 BOTTLE EITHER BY WEIGHING OR THE ISOTOPE METHODS CHECK THAT ALL THE ALARMS ARE WORKING PROPERLY CHECK THAT ALL THE CO2 OUTLETS ARE FREE OF OBSTRUCTION

CHECKS ON THE FOAM SYSTEM


CHECK THAT THE FOAM IS VIABLE BY USING THE TEST KIT PROVIDED BY THE MAKERS CHECK THAT THE FOAM SPREADERS FROM THE ENGINE ROOM ARE NOT OBSTRUCTED CHECK THAT THE VALVES ARE GREASED AND NOT CORRODED OR JAMMED CHECK THAT THE DECK MONITORS ARE GREASED AND EASY TO ROTATE

CHECKS ON FIRE MAIN, HYDRANTS, HOSES & NOZZLES


THE INSPECTIONS INCLUDE: TESTING THE SYSTEM FOR LEAKS INSPECT PIPES FOR CORROSION OPEN DRAIN VALVES REGULARLY, ESPECIALLY IN COLD WEATHERS TO AVOID FREEZING OF WATER AND THEREBY CHOKING THE PIPELINES

THE VALVES ARE GREASED PROPERLY AND EASY TO MOVE PRESSURE TESTING HOSES TESTING SPRAY NOZZLES THROUGH THEIR OPERATING RANGE REPLACE DAMAGED PARTS, LIKE BOLTS, COUPLINGS, ETC IF FOUND NON-FUNCTIONAL ORDER NEW SPARES

CHECKS ON PORTABLE EXTINGUISHERS


RECHARGE CYLINDERS ONCE USED BEFORE RECHARGING CHECK THE CYLINDER FOR CORROSION CHECK CYLINDER IF DUE FOR PRESSURE TEST CHECK THE TRIGGER VALVE FLUID IS TIGHT AND OPERATES FREELY CHECK OPERATION AND FLUID TIGHTNESS OF OTHER VALVES

ENSURE SAFETY PIN PUT IN CAP AFTER RECHARGING WRITE THE DATE OF TEST ON THE LABEL ATTACHED REPLACE CYLINDER IN PREVIOUS POSITION
