INTRODUCTION
OCB 283 is digital switching system which
supports a variety of communication needs like basic telephony, ISDN, interface to mobile communication, data communication etc. This system has been developed by CIT ALKATEL of France and therefore has many similarities to its predecessor E-10B (also known as OCB 181 in EFrance).

Salient features of OCB-283 OCB

It is digital switching system with an angle T stage switch a maximum of 2048 PCM can be conducted. Its supports both ANOLOG and DIGITAL subscribers. OCBOCB-283 has a double recovery feature. Various units of 0CB-283 system are connected over token ring. 0CBThis enables fast exchange of information & avoid complicated links. The charge account of subscriber are automatically saved in a disk once in a day , this avoid lose of revenue in case of total power supply failure. All the control units are implemented on same type of hardware. This is called a station. The system has modular structure . The expansion can be very easily carried out by adding necessary hardware & software. The Environment requirement of the system is very flexible. The system can work at temp. 5-45C ; though optimum temp. is 5-45 22 22C.

Subscriber Access Unit

Subscriber access unit (CSN) is so designed that they can (CSN) be equipped with analog or digital subscriber or both. The cards for both are different but they can be equipped in any slot of the shelf. CSN can be placed either in EXCHNAGE switch room or at a remote location. CSN is known as CSNL or CSND respectively. The CSN have one BASIC RACK and up to 3 Extension Racks. The architecture can be divided into parts:parts:-

Control And Connection Unit

It contains various Control Units:

Multi resister (MR):- Call handler setup and release of call. (MR):Translator (TR):- Translation of digits, databanks of subscriber & (TR):circuits in files. Marker (MQ):- Message distribution between common control & (MQ):connection units. Charger (TX):- Computing the charges of a call, keeping meter. (TX):Matrix System Handler (GX):- Process & make connection in (GX):switching matrix on the order from MR or MQ. Common Channel signaling Network Controller:- Manage the Controller:CCS#7 network for signaling.

Operation & Maintenance Unit (SMM)

SMM station in OCB-283 performs the O & M OCBfunctions. The SMM station has full duplicate hardware SMM A & SMM B of which one is active and other is on stand by. For both SMM there are two mirror image hard disks of 1200 MB capacity. SMM dialogue with all SMCs over MIS token ring. There are up to 4 alarm reception ring for handling exchange alarms.

5-ESS Switch
The main function of an exchange is to process calls from a calling subscriber and make connection to the called subscriber. This connection can be direct or via another exchange. The exchange must not process one call but thousands of calls at the same time. This means there is a complex relationship between the hardware and software of the exchange .

5-ESS Basic Switching functions

The exchange must perform four basic switching function .

(1)Supervision: (1)Supervision: detects and reports acknowledgements and request to terminate service. (2)Signaling :transmits (2)Signaling :transmits information about lines and trunks and information about other aspects of call handling to control switching equipment. (3)Routing: (3)Routing: converts address information to the location of the corresponding called lines. (4)Alerting: (4)Alerting: notifies a subscriber of incoming calls (i.e ringing). (i.e

Basic Call Handling in 5-ESS 5

1) Intra Exchange Calls: these are calls between two subscribers served by the same exchange. 2) Inter Exchange Calls: these are calls that involve more than Calls: two exchanges . a) An outgoing call that goes out of the exchange via a trunk. b) An incoming call is a call that comes into the exchange via a trunk. c) A tandem call is a call that comes into the exchange on one trunk and leaves the exchange on another trunk. Thus a tandem call is both incoming and outgoing

Major Hardware Units

The main hardware units involved in call processing are AM (administrative module) CM (communication module) SM (switching module)

administrative module
AM Provides: (1) Call routing: the AM controllers routing of inter module calls i.e. calls between different SMs (2) Interface between maintenance personnel: personnel: the AM maintains an interface with maintenance personnel's through the MCC (master control center) (3) Program and database backup: the AM maintains backup copies of the software system and static portion of the database on disc files.

SM ( Switching module )
It provides : The SM performs almost 95% of the call processing maintenance functions. call routing Announcements call progress supervision call waiting Abbreviated dialling call diversion conference calls

EWSD Digital Switch

Electronic Switching System Digital The name is abbreviated from the German equivalent of Electonische Wheeler System Digital. It is designed by the M/S SIEMENS, Germany. It can work as local cum transit exchange. It supports CCS No.7, ISDN.
