CHAPTER 3

Video Cassette Recorder

OBJECTIVE
At the end of the topic you should able: Know information storing method

magnetic tape. State the recording system magnetic helical scan method. Associate relationship between the rotating drum with field and frame video. Draw tape wrap diagram in drum. Draw and label VHS tape format.

Video Cassette Recorder

VCR Set with Remote Control

Video Cassette Recorder

VHS video Tape

The inside of a VCR

Definitions VCR
Electro-mechanical device that records,

stores on a videotape cassette, and plays back on a TV set recorded images and sound Can perform the process of recording & playback. both information(Audio&Video) can be reused during process playback. information is stored in a cassette(Tape)

QUESTION.
Is there a difference between a VCR and a VCP?

What VCP stand for..

Answer

Videocassette player, a VCR without recording

capability.

Video tape format

Different tape formats can not be used by other

format video tape.

VHS FAMILY
a. VHS (Video Home System)

Advantages - widely available and cheap Disadvantages - Risk moldy (berkulat) tapes and broken.

b. VHS - C (Compact)

Size smaller than VHS

Advantages - small size & low Disadvantages - Risk moldy & broken. Need to use adapter to watch.

c. Super VHS

an improvement on video and audio

qualities of the VHS format. Benefits Price tapes & cameras cheap, quality video high.

Video tape format

FAMILY Video 8
a. 8mm, Hi8mm, and Digital 8
8mm is a consumer format which was introduced

for palm-sized camcorders. Hi-8 is an improvement on the 8mm format and was introduced primarily for industrial customers that could not afford expensive, broadcast-quality equipment.

Digital 8 video is recorded on Hi-8 tapes except

that the video information is digitally compressed before being recorded to tape. Note that 8mm, Hi8mm, & Digital 8 video cassettes are the same size and have similar appearance. Advantage Smaller size Disadvantage - requires an 8mm camera or deck in order to view the videotapes.

Video tape format

FAMILY BetaCam
a. BetaMax BetaMax was developed in 1970's by Sony BetaMax had better resolution than rival

formats, because it used more tape for each second than other formats. Its "big brother", BetaCam & BetaCam SP

Advantage - can fit as much video as possible into

one tape. - better resolution Disadvantage - Expensive

Video tape format

FAMILY Digital
a. Mini-DV DV is the first high-quality videotape format

available to the consumer market. This format digitally compresses each video frame to allow video information to be stored on a very narrow tape. The Mini-DV tape enclosure was designed to work in palm-sized digital camcorders.

Storing Methods
Audio and Video signal information have many

storing methods i. Vibration method ii. Magnetic method iii. Optical/Film method iv. Electronic method v. Using Laser Method

The principle of Recording and Playback

Magnetic recording method is commonly used to

store video and audio signal is divided into THREE types: i. Longitudinal Recording (Rakaman Memanjang) ii. Transverse Recording (Rakaman Melintang) iii. Helical Recording

Longitudinal Method
Longitudinal Recording is only suitable for low

frequency because the wavelength with tape movement speed that is limited. Require a long recording tape.

Diagram of Longitudinal Recording

Transverse Recording
This Transverse recording suitable to be used for

high frequency but need tape that is wide(lebar) is not suitable to be used for domestic tape / portable.

Diagram of Transverse Recording

Recording Technologies

Helical Recording
Helical recording was a method that is most

suitable because does not require tape that too wide and long. Therefore, this technique is suitable for various uses of the recording.

Diagram of Transverse Recording

Between all three systems recording only Helical

system that is best due to recording shaped inclined(condong) is compared Transverse recording system and Longitudinal recording system.
