What is Physics?

1.1 Understanding Physics

1. Like all sciences, physics is based on experimental

observations and quantitative measurements.

1.1 Understanding Physics

2. Historically, until nineteenth century, physics was called natural philosophy.

1.1 Understanding Physics

3. Physics is a branch of science concerning study of natural phenomena, that is, properties of matter and energy.

1.1 Understanding Physics

4. Some examples of natural phenomena are (a) sunrise and sunset, (b) lightning and thunder, (c) rainbow and blue sky, (d) earthquake and tsunami.

Field of study in Physics

1 In general, physics is concerned with the study of energy and the properties and structure of matter.

The principles and concepts of physics are then applied in our daily life. This helped advancement of technology.
Examples of technological inventions include

the semiconductor technology, laser technology, communication technology, microwave.

Field of Physics Measurement Force and motion Heat Waves Optics Nuclear physics Electric and electromagnectism Electronics Properties of matter Astronomy

Type of study Study of the measuring instruments Study of the action of force and movement Study of hot substance Study of sound , information transfer and telecommunication Study of light Study of reactions in the nucleus of an atom Study of the applications of electricity and magnetism Study of electronic chips and computer system Study of the strength of substance Study of stars and planets in the universe

Concepts of physics and study of physics

Principles and theories of physics explain how the phenomenon occurs and why it occurs in that way.
Need to understanding the concept of

physics.
A concepts of physics is produced trough the

scientific method of investigation.

Observation Use the sense to feel the daily phenomenon

Experiment Perform an experiment to study the required characteristics of the phenomenon

Theory Suggest the causes of the phenomenon studied through the experiment

Further investigation Suggest measurements for the theory and modify it if necessary

Application Invention of technology based of the theories of physics

SCIENTIFIC SKILLS
SCIENCE PROCESS SKILLS MANIPULATIVE SKILLS

Observing Using and handling science apparatus Classifying Measuring and using numbers Maintaining science apparatus correctly and safely Making inferences Cleaning science apparatus Predicting correctly Communicating Handling specimen correctly and carefully Using time and space relationship,
Interpreting data, Define operationally, Controlling variables, Making hypothesis, Experimenting

Sketch specimen and science apparatus

WHAT ARE SCIENCE PROCESS SKILLS?

How a scientist works, thinks and
studies problems. (Friedl, 1995)
