TESTING HYPOTHESIS
ABOUT THE LINEARITY
OF REGRESSION
Testing Hypothesis About Linearity
Of Regression

Definition
Need for hypothesis testing
Procedure
Numerical

Definition

If the data is replicated with the several Y
values observed at the same X values as given in
the data.
X Y-Values Sum
x1 y11, y12, ...., y1n1 y1
X2 y21,y22,...., y2n2 Y2
... ... ... ... ... ...
xk yk1,yk2, ..., yk nk yk
Why we Need for hypothesis
testing?

We need the hypothesis testing to
know about the linearity of
regression line. It provides a
mathematical proof of the
linearity between two variables.
Procedure
We use the following procedure to test the hypothesis
that the means y.x are on straight line.

(I) State null & alternative hypothesis
(2) Level of significance
(3) Test statistic
(4) Computations
(5) Critical region
(6) Conclusion
Step-I : State null & alternative
hypothesis

Ho: The regression line is linear y.x
= + X
H1:The regression line is not linear
y.x + X
Step-II: Level of significance

= .01,.15,.10 etc
Step-III : Test Statistic
Here,

=
distinct values of X
k= no. of groups or distinct values of X

= represents the Y-value corresponding to

= no. of values sum corresponding to

n=m total number of observations or(

= n)

= sum of Y-values
STEP 4 : Computation

STEP 5 : Critical Region

STEP 6 : Conclusion

If H

Otherwise, we accept Ho
Numerical

The following data show the heights (x) and
weights (Y) of 12 men. We selected the heights in
advance and then observed the weights of the
random group of men having the selected heights.
Test the hypothesis @ 5% level of significance
that the regression line is linear.

(vi)- Conclusion:-

As the value of F

is less then the
critical regions value, therefore we
accept H

. We may conclude that there
is sufficient evidence to indicate
that the regression is straight linear
line.
