What is Autism??
Autism is a brain disorder that affects the transmition of information to the brain Autism appears before the age of 3 years Boys are more likely to be affected by autism than girls

causes
Causes Uknown A few factors are being investigated: -Genetic factors : It tends to run in families, and identical twins, who share the same genes, are much more likely to both have autism than are fraternal twins. -Brain damaged : some of the cells that affect communication, emotions, and senses not develop properly or get damaged.

TYPES OF AUTISM

Pervasive Developmental Disorder Not Otherwise Specified (PDD-Nos).

SYMPTOMS
Social interaction : -Fails to respond to his or her name -Has poor eye contact -Appears not to hear you at times Language : - Starts talking later than age 2, and has other developmental delays by 30 months

-Loses previously acquired ability to say words or sentences -Doesn't make eye contact when making requests Behaviour : -Becomes disturbed at the slightest change in routines or rituals -May be unusually sensitive to light, sound and touch

Risk factors
Family history : Families who have one child with autism have an increased risk of having another child with the disorder. Parents' ages : Having an older father (being 40 or older) may increase a child's risk of autism. There may also be a connection between children being born to older mothers and autism

DIAGNOSIS
No definitive medical test. Team uses interviews, observation, and specific checklists developed for this purpose. Team might include neurologist, psychologist, developmental pediatrician, speech/language therapist, learning consultant, etc. Must rule out MR, hearing impairment, behavior disorders, or eccentric habits.

treatment
There is no cure for autism, but doctors, therapists, and special teachers can help kids with autism overcome or adjust too many difficulties. The earlier a kid starts treatment for autism much better.

Medications. No medication can improve the core signs of autism, but certain medications can help control symptoms. Antidepressants may be prescribed for anxiety, for example, and antipsychotic drugs are sometimes used to treat severe behavioral problems.
