Nature of Management.

Management is a combination of organized body of knowledge (science) and its skillful application. Although it does not satisfy all the requirements of a profession, it is to a large extent professional in character.

Nature and Features of Management Management is: * Universal *Purposeful *Unifying Force * Social Process *Multidisciplinary

*Continuous Process *Intangible *Situational *Essentially an Executive Function *An art as well as a Science.

Management is universal
* It is required in every form of group activities like family, a government, an army or a business enterprise. * The fundamental principles of management are applicable in all areas of organized effort. * Managers at all levels perform same basic functions.

Management is Purposeful.
* Management exists for the achievement of specific objectives. * It is the means towards the accomplishment of predetermined goals. * The success of management is measured by the extent to which the desired objectives are attained.

Management is a Unifying Force.


* The essence of management lies in the co-ordination of individual efforts into team. * Management reconciles the individual goals with organizational goals. * As a unifying force, management creates a whole that is more than the sum of individual parts.

Management is Social Process.


* Management is done through the people, by the people and for the people. * It is social process because it is concerned with interpersonal relation

Management is Multidisciplinary.
* Management has to deal with human behavior under dynamic conditions.
* It depends upon wide knowledge derived from several disciplines like engineering, sociology, psychology, economics, mathematics etc.

Management is Continuous Process.


* Management is a dynamic and on-going process.
* The cycle of management continues to operate so long as there is organized action for the achievement of group goal.

Management is Intangible.
* Management is an unseen or invisible force. * It can not be seen but presence can be felt everywhere in the form of results.

* However the managers who performs the functions are very much tangible and visible.

Management is Situational.
* Efficient management is always situational because there is not one best way of doing things.
* A successful manager must take into account situational difference.

Management is essentially an Executive Function.


* It deals with the active direction and control of the activities of people to obtain pre-determined objectives. * Management is a technique by which the objectives of the human group are determined, clarified and accomplished.

Management is an Art as well as a Science.


* Management contains a systematic body of theoretical knowledge as well as the practical application of such knowledge.
