Grievance Management

Grievance means any discontent or dissatisfaction ,whether expressed or not and whether valid or not ,arising out of anything connected with the company that an employee thinks, believes or even feels ,is unfair, unjust or inequitable.

The discontenment arises out of something connected with the organisation


Source lies within the company such as unfair treatment by the supervisor ,violation of company rules, etc. Personal reasons such as illness in the family ,conflict with a neighbour, etc do not constitute a grievance . Such outside sources are beyond the control of the employer.

Grievance may be expressed or implied

The discontent may be rational or irrational based on distorted perceptions, lack of proper thinking.

Sources of grievance
The causes of grievance may be grouped under three heads Grievances resulting from Management policies (a) wage rates or scale of pay Overtime Leave Transfer-improper matching Lack of role clarity

Grievance resulting from working conditions :


Unrealistic Non-availibility of proper tools , machines and equipments for doing the job. Tight production standards Bad physical conditions of workplace Poor relationship with the supervisor Negative approach to discipline

Grievance resulting from personal factors


Narrow attitude Over ambition Egoistic personality

Handling of grievance
Open door policy- the employees are free to meet the top executive of the organisation.

Filing of written grievance

Supervisor or foreman Answer within 48 hours Head of the department answer within three days

Joint grievance committee recommendations to manager within 7 days concerned employee within three days of the report

Chief executive

Voluntary arbitration
