Rationalizing Denominators
When radical expressions appear in the denominator of a quotient, we need to rewrite the quotient so that the denominator does not contain radicals. This process is called rationalizing the denominator.
2 Example: Simplify: 3 2 2 3 2 3 2 3 3 3 9 3 3
This will make a perfect square.

Conjugates
To rationalize a denominator containing two terms, we use the fact that (a + b)(a b) = a2 b2 and multiply both the numerator and denominator of the quotient by the conjugate of the denominator.

The conjugate of 5 6 is 5 6.
The conjugate of 3x 2 y is 3x 2 y.
