Gujarat Dairy Sector

The WHITE REVOLUTION has ensured that Gujarat, though ranked fifth in milk production in India, will supply milk to most metros in the country. Gujarat has been ranked as the fifth largest milk producer in India with a procurement of 6,421 thousand tonne of milk in 2003-04. The nationwide procurement during the period was at 88,082 thousand tonne.

Milk production in the state has been increasing at the rate of nearly five per cent per annum.

Gujarat had produced 4,913 and 6,421 tonne thousands of milk during 1997-98 and 2002-03, respectively. The dairy industry in Gujarat is mainly in the hands of strong cooperatives where the Anand pattern of dairy co-operatives have evolved. Gujarat is also a major exporter with major contribution by the Gujarat Co-operative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF) in total exports of dairy products.

Given the 300 ml per capita consumption of milk in Gujarat, the state consumes around 180 lakh litre of milk everyday.

History of SUMUL

Sumul or Surat Milk Union Limited, which is now renamed as The Surat District Co-operative Milk Producers' Union Ltd, is one among the 12 district unions which acts as manufacturing units of dairy products for (G.C.M.M.F.) Gujarat Co-operative Milk Marketing Federation Limited.

SUMUL Dairy is a co-operative endeavor committed to help marginal farmers and down trodden tribal to lead to a healthy life and better standard of living through scientific animal husbandry practices. Todays Sumul enjoys the pride to serve milk and milk products to popular in Surat city and surrounding towns of it. Hence, the Surat district co-operative milk producers union ltd, SUMUL is trade name and literally meaning sound price, came in to existence on August 22, 1951

Objective of SUMUL

To provide year round milk market for their surplus milk and to earn reasonable returns for the milk to improve their quality of life. To procure milk and process it into good quality milk and milk products to market it at most economically and efficiently to give maximum overall net returns to the producers and general satisfaction to the consumers. To provide essential technical inputs and services to the producers at their door steps in an economic and efficient manner and also in a way most acceptable to them to increase milk production and to reduce the cost of production.

Overall Progress

During the year total turnover is RS 900 Crore which is RS 110 Crore more than the last year. Total profit is Rs. 2,30,35,767.00 for the year 2009 -2010. During the year milk procurement in increased by 4.1% & milk sale is just equally increased by 5.01% by which we have balanced the procurement & sale equability. During the year 29,50,69,162 kilogram milk were procured. During the year Rs. 350 per kilo fat was paid to the farmer which was Rs. 32 more than the last year.
