The integumentary system (skin) is the body's largest and heaviest organ. In adults it covers an area of 1.5- 2.

0 m2, and counts for about 15% of the body weight. It consists of three layers a straight field squamous epithelium called the epidermis, a deeper connective tissue layer called the dermis, and a layer below the dermis called the hypodermis. The total surface area of the human skin is approximately 18sq.ft. Body skin equal to the weight of 40 pounds is shed by a human body during its lifetime.

The integumentary system consists of the skin and other organs such as hair nails and the cutaneous glands. The integumentary system is basically your skin you look at it everyday and night most of the time . A completely new layer of skin is produced by a human being in a single month. The dark color of skin is due to the chemical known as melanin which is produced by melanocytes. The number of dead cells which fall off the body every minute are between 50,000 -60,000.

The skin suffers the most physical injuries to the body, but it resists and recovers from trauma better than other organs do. Why does the skin suffer the most physical injuries to the body you ask?, because the skin is the first organ that gets attacked by trauma and infections. The skin also acts like a storage facility by storing lipids and water. Heat regulation: increases profusion and heat loss, while constricted vessels greatly reduce cutaneous blood flow and conserve heat. The skin acts as a water resistance barrier so essential nutriance are not washed out of the body.

The epidermal cells of the skin are packed with a tough protein called Keratin, They are also linked by strong desmosomes that give this epithelium its strength. The skin is important as a barrier to water. It prevents the body from absorbing excess water into your body's while swimming or bathing. The skin provides a relatively dry and semi- impermeable barrier to fluid loss. Oxygen, nitrogen and carbon dioxide can dose into the epidermis in small amounts .

The Epidermis is composed of the outer most layers of the skin. The Epidermis also forms a protective barrier over the body's surface. The Epidermis is also responsible for keeping water in the body, and preventing pathogens from entering. The Epidermis contains no blood vessels , and cells in the deepest layers are nourished by diffusion from blood capillaries extending to the upper layers of the dermis. The Epidermis composed of five types of cells. 1- Stem cells -2- Keratinocytes-3Melanocytes-4- Tactile- &5- Dendritic.

The Dermis ranges from 2.0 mm thick in the eyelids to about 4mm thick in the palms and soles. The Dermis is composed of mainly collagen, but also contains elastic and reticular fibers, fibroblasts, and the other cells typical of fibrous connective tissue. The Dermis is fully supplied with blood vessels, sweat glands, sebaceous glands, and nerve endings. The hair follicles and nail foots are embedded in the dermis . Smooth muscles interact with hair follicles contract in response to much stimuli as cold, fear, and, touch. The boundary between the epidermis and the dermis is histologically conspicuous and usually wavy. The upward waves are finger like extensions of the dermis called dermal papillae, and the downward waves are extensions of the epidermis called epidermal ridges.

Another word for hypodermis is the subcutaneous tissue. The boundary between the dermis and the hypodermis is indistinct, because the hypodermis generally has more areolar and adipose tissue. Drugs are introduced into hypodermis by being injected, because the subcutaneous tissue is highly vascular and absorbs the drugs quickly. Subcutaneous fat serves as an energy reservoir and thermal insulation. The subcutaneous fat averages about 8% thicker in women then in men, and varies with age. Infants and elderly people have less subcutaneous fat than other people, and are their fore more sensitive to cold. So basically the hypodermis is an Areolar or adipose tissue between skin and musical.
