What is GSM/CDMA/TDMA or difference between Tata indicom,

reliance and Airtel, Hutch, !dea

Various mobility technologies

GSM / GPRS / UMTS
CDMA CDMA-95, 1xRTT, 1xEVDO

Mostly different on the Radio Interface (how the handset talks over
air)

Core network and its components follow similar framework

Basic Telecom Network Speech conversion

Speech

8

Basis of Telecommunication Transmission

Speech, Video etc. are converted into equivalent electrical signals at the
Customer (subscriber) premises (source)

Telecommunication networks carry electrical/digital signals of speech, video

etc. from source to destination

At the destination, the electrical/digital signals are converted back into

equivalent speech, video etc

Concept of networks

Network A Airtel

Every network is independent of each other. Networks should be interconnected with each other for calls from one n/w to another n/w. Caller is called A Party and receiver is B party. MO is mobile originated MT is mobile terminated Ex MOC, MTSMS Who pays whom?

Network B Hutch

18

Access Network

19

What is an Access Network??

The part of the Telecommunication Network from the Subscriber

(Customer premises equipment) to the Switching facility

20

Switching Network

21

Switching Network

What is a Switching NW?

That part of a Telecom Network which connects to the Access network and switches calls to the desired destination (in Access NW) as per dialed digits..

DATA Bases

HLR- Home Location Register

All Subscriber information

Services, Authentication parameters

Location of MS (Mobile Station) MS sends this info vis MSC/VLR to HLR

46

GSM Building Blocks- Description

VLR- Visitor Location Register

Contains info about all MSs in MSC area As soon as MS roams into a new MSC area, VLR requests its HLR for subscription data. Also its (MSs) HLR is informed about MSs current location AUC provides Authentication parameters & ciphering keys to HLR

AUC- Authentication Centre

GSM Building Blocks- Description

EIR- Equipment Identity Register

MS- Mobile Station

Contains unique Hardware identity of Mobile equipment (IMEI) EIR checks whether the validity of the equipment.. Type approved, stolen etc.. Stolen and non type approved can be barred Mobile equipment + SIM (Subscriber Identity Module) SIM contains subscription, Authentication key and other details

HLR Home Location Register

A master database which stores permanent information on

subscriber irrespective of their location, including

Individual Subscriber Authentication Key (Ki) for each Subscriber Revenue Leakage? Identity Module (SIM) Location (VLR) Services subscribed to

Each IMSI is attached to MSISDN Integrated and Standalone HLR

Authentication Center (AUC) - Computes auth. triplets

55

VLR Visitor Location Register

Temporarily stores information for mobile subscribers/roamers who

are served/attached to a cell served by a MSC managed by this VLR

Standalone VLR and Integrated VLR

Stores Location Area of subscriber Data related to supplementary services

Call forwarding, Call barring etc.

56

MSC Mobile Switching Center

Also called the Switch

Controls multiple Base Stations; handles voice trunks Responsible for setting up, routing and supervising calls to and from
the mobile subscriber

GMSC is a MSC with a capability to:

Interface between mobile and other networks Query the HLR to terminate a call to a subscriber (which MSC/VLR is the subscriber attached to?)
57

SMSC Short Message Service Center

Stores and Forwards messages between Message Sender and

Mobile Station

Service Center address defined in SIM card Various interface protocols
