Situation
I play the drums and I have been doing so for seven years. I have recently formed and we have preformed once at our school and we are working on some other songs. So far all the music I play has been out of music books. the trouble with the drum books are that they only have a few lines of music on each page and this creates a problem of that I have is that I am constantly having to stop to change the page which throws the band off track of where they are and a lot of the time I have to get someone to turn my pages for me. What I need is something that is small and easy to carry so I dont have to keep on stopping to change the page when I am practising with my band but it also needs to turn multiple pages because in a lot of my drum books I have, the drum notation is spread across 6 to 8 pages on average..

Brief
I will design and make a page turner that will clip on to a music stand, which will turn multiple pages. To do this I will research existing products evaluate them and see what makes a good page turner and what makes a bad one. This will aid me when I practising with my band so I dont have to keep on stopping and starting therefore improving our overall sound of the band and making it easier to practice.

Initial specification
It must clip on to a music stand It music be pocket size or compact for easy transport It must turn pages quick and with minimum effort it must be cheap and easy to make It must be very easy to operate It must be light therefore making it easier to transport It will fit onto my music stand, more if possible

Research plan
What I need to know I will need to research materials that are light weight and strong because my product has to be pocket size I will need to research the dimensions of my music stand so I know how big and what shape my product has to be I will need to research different ways of turning pages so that my designs are different and individual

Where I will get the information I will get this information by looking at what other page turners are made out of , ask my teacher or research on the internet I will get this information by taking accurate measurements of my music stand I will research existing products on the internet and come up with different ways of turning the page

I will use this information as a guideline of measurements in my design but also keeping in mind that my product has o be pocket size I will pick the best ay of turning the page by rating each one the one I ill use will be the most efficient and the quickest

Once I have chosen my material I will research finishes that I can apply to my product so I can be protected from any damage

I will look on the internet, books and ask my teacher on what are the best finishes for my material that I will choose at a later date

I will use this information by applying it to my final design so it will be well protected against damage

On this page I have created a time plan to keep me on track when I am completing my project. This will help me complete my project on time by giving me goals along the course of my project.

Existing products
This page turner also comes with an adaptor so it can attach on to nearly any music stand This page turner looks quite good and very easy to carry but I would need 2 or 3 flippers for my page turner because of the amount of pages I need to turn. It looks very easy to attach on to the music stand which is a very good feature.

This page turner looks good and I like the pedal I think it is a very good idea, the foot pedal is big and easy to change the page. It has a long cable so it will definitely reach the stand. although it only turns one page and I need multiple flippers. Also the page turner is small and compact but with the pedal it doesnt look like that It will be easy to carry around because of the big pedal.

This page turner is very simple as all it only has is two pedals one to go forward and one to go back. It is very easy to carry and is the size of a pencil case which is extremely manageable to carry. But the one thing that is a huge let down for this product is that it only works on pcs or Mac's which is not very good for me because I want some thing very portable, which it is but I have to carry a lap top round with me. Although if you do have a lap top handy it can turn an unlimited amount of pages, because it is compatible with power point.

This page turner is excellent in that you dont have to carry around a book or sheets of paper, It is all on a screen which is an excellent idea but you have to carry around the screen the stand and the foot pedal which is to much for what I want and I imagine it would be very heavy to carry all of that

Existing products music stands

On this page I am researching music stands and not music page turners because there are not many page turners on the market. So I decided to research music stands and how the page turner would fit on to the stand and it will help me adapt my product when it comes to designing, although it is not a page turner it is relevant to the project, This stand would be quiet hard to clamp a page turner because unlike the other two this music stand has very little space for a clamp to clamp. The only space would be the main spine in the middle of the music stand witch would not be as good as the other stands which have a broader space. This music stand looks like it will be very awkward to fit a music stand page turner to because the music stand is not a flat surface it is a series of bars welded together and like the previous music stand it may need an adaptor to securely fit the page turner.

This music stand would be very easy to clamp a page turner to and any type of clamp on the page turner would fit very well because there is a lot of surface for it to clamp on.

This is the type of stand that I practice my drums on. It is very similar to the stand in the top left and again this stand would have no problem coping with any type of clamp that is attached to it because it has a very big flat surface for it.

This music stand would be very hard to attach a page turner to because there is very little space for it to attach. It may need an adaptor to make sure it is on there securely. Even if you fitted the page turn on the stand looks very top heavy and may fall over

This music stand has only one real place where you could clamp the page turner to, the hinge where the arms turn. But that space is not that big and the page turner may turn or move

Yamaha Drums is a subsidiary of the Yamaha Corporation. Yamaha has been building drums since 1967, and builds their drums by hand in Japan. The company currently manufactures acoustic and electronic drum kits, as well as other percussion instruments, marching band equipment, and drum hardware. Many professional drummers have endorsement deals with Yamaha Drums. Yamaha has made many innovations in drum hardware. They were the first to introduce: locking hi-hat clutch. a hide-away cymbal boom-arm, The Hands-Free Hi-Hat Clutch allows double-pedal a ball-joint tom mount with 360 degrees of rotation, and double bass drummers to use their feet instead of Yamaha Enhanced Sustain System (YESS). their hands to put hi-hats in closed position. The new Clutch is a major advance over the ordinary drop clutch, which takes one hand out of play to put the hihat in closed position.

This is a reply that I received from Roland

The message I received from Roland told me that they were not interested in my project but they did recommend a product to me that they thought would suite me best. So I will be evaluating this product to see how well it meets my specification. The page turner that Roland recommended to me is a lot like another page turner that I have in my existing products, but when I was researching I did not find this page turner. My specification is: cheap, compact, easy to use and to transport around school and 3 or more flippers to turn the page. This page turner only meets one point of my specification as it has more than 3 flippers because it is just a screen which has a unlimited amount. I dont know how easy to use is it because you have to put all of the music onto it, and I dont know how difficult that would be. It isn't very cheap because it is 500, it isn't compact as it is bigger than a A4 piece of paper, and it looks quite thick. And there fore it will not be very easy to transport.

The company that sales this product only makes page turners and are experts on this type of product therefore I emailed them the same email that I sent Roland and Yamaha drums. On this page I will evaluate each product and give it a score out of 10 on each of these subjects on the side. 1 being the lowest and 10 being the highest. The product that comes out with the best score, will then be analyse in more depth to see why it came out as the best, what makes a good page turner and what makes a bad page turner. This will aid me in the later development of my product like the detailed specification so I will know what aspects to put into my product and what aspects to keep out.

This page turner came out as the best product with a score of 54. Now I will evaluate it on the next page. I will look at every specific part of the page turner and discuss it and say why and how it contributed to the product winning the c.a.f.e.q.u.e.

A very good and easy to use foot pedal to switch the page. But it might be hard to use when I am playing the drums because both of my feet are used at points The flipper is two pieces of transparent plastic strips for strength and for the piece of paper to go between, if the musician needs to turn back.

It is easy to attach on to the music stand by clipping on top of the music stand.

The page turner has a very long line so you can use it if your music stand is put up very high.

This is a very good idea because I have never seen it before and it makes sure that there product will fit on to any music stand

Environment research
On this page I will research similar environments and evaluate them to see what qualities my product would need to have to fit in with my environment, by looking at all of the aspects of the room like what furniture was used, the lighting and the decorations And so on. Theses are examples of the type of environment that I will be using my product in. there is a lot of wood used this gives the rooms a stylish look. But it would not be very easy to use wood for my project, so I would have to use plastic or metal. I would use a colour or a finish on it so it fits well with the environment

Research on ways of operating the page turner

This pedal looks very reliable and strong it is a very simple design as it only has one pedal as apposed to some which have more this ensures that it would be very easy to use. It would be quite easy to use this while playing drums but the ability to carry it around without hassle may not be very high. 7/10

This page turner is very good its i a very simple design and very clear and easy to use with a back and forward buttons. It is a little more existing than the first pedal with the see through casing. It would be very easy to carry around with you because it is quite small but for what I want to use it for it might be the wrong style because I dont need a back button and if I didnt it would be half the size. 7/10

Another way that I was thinking of how you can operate the page turner was manually, like with a drum stick. If I could not use many electronics then this might be a option. But it depends on how I do It because if I get it wrong then it would ruin the who project but operating it manually would make the whole project more simply

This is another pedal but a lot smaller than the other ones because this is small and simple because it only has one pedal or button to use and due to that it would be easy to carry around and to use

These are buttons and if I used these it would be an unusual but good idea of changing the page because if I use this sort of button I could make a clip that fixes onto my drum stick and I would press it when ever I wanted rather than using my feet which would give me more freedom and I can concentrate on playing drums, I would have a wire connecting it but it would not bother me at all I dont think

This is a light sensor for a automatic door im not sure how I would connect this up but I still think is a invite idea if I used this I would give me a lot more freedom when I am playing drums I would just wave my foot in front of the sensor and it would turn the page. It looks quite big to carry but there are smaller ones on the market but they might not be cost effective to use this system

This is a similar idea to the one above it is a push button but it is bigger and would be easier to use because of that. It is very small and I would be able to carry it with ease like the one above I would make a bracket to make it attachable so it will go on my drum

This flick switch is very small and will be easy to carry and I think would be very easy to use when playing drums and I would have to make a bracket so I can put it on any drums I will do some research on were the best place for it is to go. This will help me in the design process

Research on how the page will be turned

The direction of the page turner


The first way of turning the page is by a flipper most page turners use this method of turning the page. This I probably because it is reliable, very easy to make and it looks very good. But I would have to research into the setup of the motor and I would have to make it strong enough to turn the page. It would have to be made out of a light material to lessen the amount of strain the flipper put on the motor. If I used this way of turning the page I would have to have multiple motors or a gear system because I need 3 or 4 flippers. This way of turning the page is unusual as it is on a screen of a lap top. But this creates a problem in its self because you have to carry a lap top round with you when you want to practise. Although it is an advantage because you will be able to see the music better because the screen is very bright, the music book and the page turner is all in one so all you have to carry round is the laptop. But a special music is needed to hold the laptop safely. This idea is different to all the other ideas. this idea is that I will have something that runs along the bottom of the music stand one side to another. It has the page on top of it so when it runs across the bottom it turns the page. This would be quite small because all it would have in it would be the motor which would make it easy to carry around. If I did choose this idea it would require some development as it is just an idea.

This way of page turner works by the arms holding the page and when you use the pedal the arm flips up and turns the page and the arm goes in a semi circle action. This is a ok way of turning the page, and it would be quite easy to do it. But the arm lets go of the page half way and it might take a while for the page to turn fully and when I am playing drums I need for the page to be turned fast and when I want it to.

Research on how the page turner will clip on to the music stand

If I use this clip I would have to build it into the page turner which would be a lot harder to do and the clip doesn't look like it would be very good at clipping on to the music stand because the width of the clip is not that big and it could slide around a lot.

This case is good because it has a clip which is strong and the case is separate, also the page turner could be made especially to the size of the case so there is no need to build a clip in to the design. And the shape has to be square so this would speed up the design process because that would be apart of the design specification.

This is a adaptor for a page turner so you put the page turner in the adaptor and strap it to the music stand. This is a good way of putting the page turner on the music stand because it is flat and easy to carry, and the page turner needs a simple hook to attach on to the adaptor.

This clip looks very easy to make because it can be made out of one piece of plastic and just bent into place. Although it looks big when it is on the page turner the only bit sticking out would be the curved clip. This is a simple easy clip to make which would save time when making the page turner.

I think that this clip is one of the best because it is small simple and the clip is big so it has a lot of surface area so it can stay sturdy and not move. All those features are what I want from my clip and I would have to add that in to my final specification. Therefore I will use something similar in my design.

This clip holds the object very securely and it can be rotated but this is not needed and it would be extra work for no benefit all I want from the page turner clip is a small simple way of attaching my page turner and this is not that so it is not very good for what I want but it is a good idea.

Ergonomics
On this page I will research about the overall ergonomics for playing drums like the maximum reach and posture and reading the music and so I get a detailed perspective of them, and then I can adapt and tailor my product using this information to make it easier to use the page turner.

Angle of view
The preferred angle of view for displays (the angle at which the display plane is positioned with regard to the person monitoring it) should be 90 degrees. This is especially important with large picture displays as positioning them at an angle may cause parts of the display to be hidden from your eyes.

Viewing distance
The maximum display viewing distance should be determined by the size of details shown on a display. The reading distance for reading displays is usually 300mm - 750mm, as many displays have to be read at arm's length and must allow you to reach or adjust controls. Displays must be optimally positioned within your field of view.

Body Mechanics Four-limb motion from a sitting position is unnatural, working against laws of physics and your body's mechanics. So I have researched into how to play drums more comfortably and with greater ease Everyones body mechanics are different, making it impossible to establish steadfast rules that govern the way we play drums. Its a lot like running and in a way, we are running at the drums. There are general rules that should be observed yet each and every runner creates a personal style that best suits their body mechanics. With that said, lets discuss two basic principles that I believe apply to all drummers regardless of style

When playing drums the best position for your legs is at 90% or a little bit over at the knees as it is easier because the movement of the shin is more efficient and more conferrable. There is general rule regardless of your style and kit set-up to how you sit at a drum kit. There is a natural tendency to lean forward into the drums creating an intimate relationship with the instrument. From an ergonomic standpoint this should be resisted. The angle of your back relative to your legs (thighs) should not go under 90-degrees. Leaning forward, breaking the right angle position creates resistance to movement in the arms and legs this happens when your leg position is not correct as wellAdditionally, with todays advanced (aggressive) style of bass drum and hi-hat pedal technique, it becomes increasingly difficult to lift your legs upwards floating your feet on pedal surfaces. Consequently, the straight back, right-angle position or slightly backwards (over 90 degrees) is most beneficial. And is more comfortable as well.

Material research
Perspex
(Polymethyl Methacrylate) or trade name Perspex is a very high impact material and is very strong and robust material.this material will not shatter or scratch very easily. There are very little breakages associated with it. Also it is half the weight of glass with the same thickness and gives the same effect. It has a Glass like transparency or opaque can be coloured with pigments. Its used for Display signs, baths, roof lights and machine guards.

Wood
There are lots of types of wood with each having there own qualities. Such as colour,strength, weight and ease of working and price. Other advantages of wood are that it will readily take a wide range of finishes such as paints, vanishes, stains and waxes. It also has a large amount of ways it can be joined, screwed,nailed, jointed and glued. There are two types of wood, man made and natural. Man made woods consist of plywood, block board and mdf. Natural woods consist of pine, ash, oak and mahogany. Each have there own unique qualities and are very different. The main defining qualities are the colours and the grains. But coloured vanishes are available to make a cheap wood look like a very expensive wood.

Metal
As with wood There are lots of types of metal with each having there own qualities. Such as they are good conductor of electricity, heat and strong. Also there are a wide range of alloys available for special purposes just as the air craft industry they are used because alloys are a mixture of metals there fore getting the optimum strength and good qualities. Metal is also harder to work than wood and often specialised tools and machinery are required but they can be heated up to be made more malleable. As with wood there are a lot of ways metal can be joined such as welding, soldering, riveting and bolting. Every type of metal is used for something different and therefore is used for some thing different.

Plastic
Plastic is the general term for a wide range of synthetic or semi synthetic polymerization products. plastic comes in a wide variety of colours styles like solid colour translucent colour and clear. They can also be bent and formed into any shape.the two mane types of plastic are thermosetting and thermoplastics. Thermosetting can only be heated up and shaped once but thermoplastics can be heated shaped and reheated and reshaped. It is also used for a hugely wide amount of products all having there own very different characteristics, plastic is the most varied material, much more than metals and woods.

Research analysis
On this page I will evaluate and analyse the research part of my project. I will go through each part of my research process and discuss what I have learnt and what I will do with the information. Existing products
When researching existing products I could not find many page turners so this was a disadvantage to my research so I decided to research on other subjects that related to my project. I decided to research music stands and how the page turner would fit on to them and how I would have to adapt my design to them. I found out that there are only 2 or 3 main page turners on the market and that they are all very different from each other. This helps me to decide what technique I will use when it comes to designing my page turner. In the music stand part of my research I learned how I would have to adapt my design to how the page turner will fit onto music stands.

Interview
in my interview I set a series of questions that I put to my target audience: drummers. I asked them specific questions that would help me design my project and give me a more detailed specification. They gave me specific points to what my product will look like and how it will function. I found out that many other drummers have the same problem as me, and that some have tried page turners but they have found them to impractical for school. I may consult with them later on in the project to evaluate my model, so I can really tailor my product to its target market.

Email
I emailed Roland and Yamaha drums about my project and to see if they the had any additional information or help the could give me. Yamaha emailed me back with the recommendation of a page turner that I did not see when researching. So I evaluated this product but it did not meet my specification so it did not help me that much but I emailed the company of the product but unfortunately I did not receive a reply. From them or Roland drums

Environment
My environment is a band room or a practise room. After looking and analysing my environment I realised that to match my environment it would have to be made out of light coloured materials, like wood but my project would be to small and detailed for that so I would have to use some lightly coloured plastic like red, but nothing to bold. But the function is more important than the aesthetics.

Aesthetics
In this part of my project I researched very specific parts of my product so I know exactly what worked well and what didnt. and also what looked good and what didnt. I researched on how I would operate the page turner which gave me a wide variety of options that I will consider when I am designing but some will be to complicated. I also researched on how the page turner will turn the page. I looked at different types of flippers and on screen music. Some of these ideas were just to complicated like the on screen page turner, but it gave me a in-depth understanding of how I can turn the page, and how easy it would be to do. And finally I looked at the different ways of attaching my page turner to the music stand. All of this research gave a a much better understanding of how a page turner works and all of the individual parts of it.

Materials
The materials research gave me a basic understanding of each material there is available to use. I will have to look more into them further on in the project but there is a few materials I know that I wont be able to use because of the restrictions that come with the material and the complexity of my project. So I think that the only material that will suit my project will be plastic.

Ergonomics
In my ergonomics research I look at the viewing distance and the angle of view. I also looked at how to play the drums and what is the correct position so I can tailor my project specifically to playing drums and make the use of it as easy as possible.

Design specification
Material I learnt from my research that I will have to make my product out of plastic because it is very versatile and strong. Plastic is also very cheap and I think that this is the best material for this project that I have at this time. I may have to use metal for some parts of my project that need to be that bit stronger but that depends on my design. If its made out of plastic I will make it out of red plastic. Now I have completed my research I have a detailed perspective of what my product should be like, and what attributes it will have.

Sizes and dimensions Functions Some of the functions that I need my product to be is that it has to have multiple arms. This is a major part of my product as I will be using it for when I practise with my band and a lot of my music has 6 or more pages. Also I may have to find a alternate way from a pedal of turning the page turner as I learnt from personal experience and my interview using a pedal while play drums is quite difficult. So I may have to use a button or turn it manually. As well as that my page turner will only be operating on one type of music stand so there is no versatility needed with it. I have no fixed dimensions for my project but I have the glide lines of that it has to be pocket size or very compact and easy to transport. But being so small it may break easy so I have to make sure I get the right balance between size and strength

This Idea fits my design specification, and I think it is a good idea. It isn't very big and it turns 4 pages. The problem is that the circular base may be quite flimsy and may break. Also the spacing of the flippers may be a problem because when it is turning a page the other flipper would be turning at the same time therefore moving the other page at the same time. This would be made from almost all plastic apart from the clip would have to be metal for strength. Because it may be flimsy I may have to build a carrying case for it.

I like this idea because it is quite small and would be easy to transport round school. But it looks like it would break quite easy, and the arms look like they could break off quite easily. I haven't decided whether to use a motor or turn the page manually because I think it would be just as easy to do it both ways. But if I did use a motor it would change the shape a lot and would not necessarily be able to be carried around as easily

I really like this idea because it is compact and it does everything my specification requires. Although it doesnt have multiple arms I would make 3 or 4 of them to clip on the bottom of each page. This would be very easy to transport around school as there will only be 3 or 4 of them and they are very small. If I were to make this particular product I would probably make it out of metal because the clip will be made out of this and I only need to make a modification to it to crate this product.

I this Idea of a magnetic page turner is a very different idea from all of my other ideas. It would be very easy to transport around school as you only need one strap and 3 or 4 clips. I would have to do some research in to the best size for the strap to be, and magnetism. But this idea meets all of my specification points.

I would make this out of plastic or metal, But I dont think that this Idea would work very well because it is on the side of the page and if I try to flick it across I think that the page will just bend and not turn. Developing initial designs


I am going to develop this idea as I think it is best suited to my specification. The other Idea I was thinking of developing was the magnet idea but I think that would be to difficult and complicated as the magnets would attract to each other when they are on the page. The things I am going to change are the pieces that are glued on because I think they will break over time because there is not much surface area to glue them on.

I think that my developed idea has been developed very well, and I think that it is now a good design as it can be made out of one hole piece of plastic and it just has to been line bent to create its shape. This means it will be very easy to make.

Model and development


I made a cardboard model of my developed idea and after that I tested it to see how well it worked. Now I will evaluate it to see if it works as a product and for what I need it to do or if I need to evaluate it more.

I had a few problems with my model. The piece that is used to push the page turner across is too small as when as when I was playing and testing it I missed it on a number of occasions. The biggest problem I had was when I used the page turner it got to the spine of the book and then stopped. The problem was that the piece that turns the page was to far back to turn the page. So I have to bring it forward so it avoids the spine of the book and goes straight past it. After I made my model I developed my design again and I changed the things that were wrong on my first idea. I made the piece that is used to move it bigger, and the edge of the page turner I made curved so the page will turn easier. Also I made the middle piece smaller so the the piece that turns the page further away from the book so it will turn the page more easily

Logo designs
I have decided to incorporate a logo in to my design to tell people what my design is all about and what it does. I will come up with ideas and pick the best one and develop it if I see necessary.

The logo liked i best was the first idea of page turner engraved into a drum stick. But It will be very hard to engrave the letters into the drum stick so I developed it and this is my final logo. I developed this idea from my first idea and I think that it sums up what the product does. You use the drum stick to turn the pages, and the writing says exactly what the product is.

Further development
When I made a model I it turned the page nut it keep on slipping off when it was half way along due to the page pushing back against the page turner. Also I realised that the extra attachment that I added to the design to push the page out to turn the page better didnt work and added no extra help to the page turner. Logo

I decided to incorporate a logo on my design. I did this because I think that I needed to show and express what the product is about so people would know what it is when they see the product. The logo came out very well on the laser cutter and I am very pleased with how it looks. There fore I will be using it in my final idea as I feel it will finish off the product and make it look very professional.

Now I am going to add a extra piece onto the back that goes along the bottom of the music stand and up round the back to keep it securely on the stand. This should solve the problem and ensure that it works correctly.

Prototype models
I made my final model out of plastic which is the material I will be using in my final product. The reason for this is because it will be a lot more realistic when it comes to see if it works properly. Working model one. My first model did not go on to the music stand because the distance in the gap where the bottom of the music stand goes was too small. Also I bent it without using any aids so there was no gap between the plastic. So it keep on getting stuck and caught. So I cut it out again with out changing any of the measurements and simply changed the places where I was going to line bend it. In addition I used a scrap piece of metal for the 180 degrees bend. This fixed the problem but another one arose. The piece that turners the page was to close to the back of the page turner.

The picture below is what I need the page turner to look like when I fixed the problem. To do that I needed to shorten the distance between the bit that turners the page and the bit that I use to move it across the music stand. Working model two.

This model worked very well it went along the music stand very well but the only problem was that because I had to shorten the gap between the piece that turns page and the piece that I move it along the drum stick with the page kept on getting stuck because the gap was to small. So to solve that problem I have to subtract a few millimetres off of the paddle to make the hole for the page to go through bigger.

Specific materials research: Plastic


The plastic I am going to make my project out of is acrylic. This is because it is cheap, strong and easy to work with.

Thermoplastics
There are two main types of plastic. Thermosetting plastics and thermoplastics. Thermosetting plastics can only be heated up and moved once. Once the plastic has cooled down it will not be able to be reheated and moved again. Where thermoplastics can be heated moved then cooled, and reheated and moved again. The type of plastic that my school uses is acrylic.

A thermoplastic is a plastic that melts to a liquid when heated and freezes to a brittle, very glassy state when cooled sufficiently.

Acrylic
Acrylic the most common plastic. The technical name for it is polymethyl methacrylate it is a thermoplastic which is very cheap and Light but strong plastic. Which is Widely available in sheet and rod form. it is used for a wide variety of applications like school projects like vacuum forming because it softens at about 95C. it is available in a wide variety of colours and thickness.

Finishes
Due to the make up and the characteristics of plastic there are not many finishes for plastic. The only ones there are is polish, it makes the plastic look shiny and will be best applied by a buffer but provides no protection at all. Wire wool can be applied to make the edges a lot smoother and rounded but again provides no protection at all. Another method of finishing plastic is a antistatic finish it comes as a cream or a spray that prevents dust attraction. But this is usually only a specialist finish and should only be applied where dust would cause a problem other wise there is not point in Appling this finish.

Manufacturing
My product was very easy to manufacture, as it was made up of only one piece that was duplicated 3 times. I had to cut it out on the laser cutter and I engraved my logo. Once I cut the net out of the page turner, I used a ruler and a scribe to mark up where I needed to bend it .I took the measurements from the prototype that I made earlier and I compared each piece and measured it to see if they are identical. Then I used the line bender to form the shape of my page turner. I used a piece of wood with a right angle to shape some of the bends.

When line bending the net I had to find a very logical way do it in a certain order to make sure that I could line bend every line correctly. If I did not do this and I did it in a random order I would have been left with one section of the net unbent and I would be unable to bend it. On the drawing below, I have wrote the way I line bent the net. This way worked well for me but on the line bender I had to remove the top for easy access.

For the 180 degree bend I used a scarp piece of metal to bend the plastic round which was thicker than the bottom of the music stand, to ensure that it slid along the bottom of the music stand with ease.

Quality assurance
Quality assurance cheeks the system that makes the products before, during, and after manufacture. It ensures that a high level of consistency is achieved when it comes to the quality and standards. I made a number of quality assurance cheeks along the way of the manufacturing of my product. First of all I cut my product out on the laser cutter in the same batch so I knew that all of my pieces would be the same size. Also I made a number of prototypes to find the best sizes, and way of manufacturing.

Prototypes

When line bending the plastic I used a piece of wood with a right angle to make sure that the bend was accurate and parallel to the music stand When manufacturing the prototype I bent the 180 degree bend and it went into a point so it didnt fit on the music stand properly and didnt move across the music stand at all.

So I used a piece of scrap metal to bend the plastic round to ensure that there was a big enough gap and make sure it would move along the music stand easily and efficiently.

Manufacturing
After cutting out my product the measurements that I scored onto the plastic i took from my final prototype. This ensured that my final product would be the same as my prototype which work and was very successful.
After I marked up my pieces I compared and measured the markings on the plastic to see if that they were all the same. This would again ensure that all of my final products would be identical. After manufacturing my product I tested it by moving it back and fourth the music stand to see if it works properly and performs to a high enough standard. I also tested the gap between the flipper and the piece that turns the page. I did this because when making the prototypes the gap was to small but in my final prototype it wasnt. so I measured the gap and compared them to each other and the prototype. Finally I used the page turner just to see if I worked.

Customer satisfaction
As I made my page turner for me and a problem that I have, I showed my product to a number of drummers to see what they thought of it and to see if they would use it. After I made my page turner was complete I showed it to the a number of drummers including my teachers in and out of school one of which is very experienced in playing drums. I asked them what he thought of the product. They were very pleased on how simple it was and how easy it was to operate. They all said that the multiple page turner idea was a innovative idea and it showed that a lot of thought had been put into it and into how the drummer will be able to use it. My drum teacher especially stressed this point and he also said that it is a very good product that solves quite a big problem. My music teacher in school commented on it saying that he has never seen anything like it on the market or that another student has made. He also said that there would be a big market for this sort of product as there is a big gap in the market for products like this. Other drummers said that they would buy and use this product because it solves a problem that they also have been having as well as me. All of the people I asked said that my product was a very successful one that they would all use.

Final evaluation
On this page I will evaluate my whole project I will look at how well I developed my design, how well I manufactured my product and how well my product came out of the design process

Development
First of all I researched existing page turners but i failed to find any product that was close to my specification and what I was making my page turner for. This told me that I was making a new type of page turner that is not on the market. I e-mailed Roland and Yamaha drums saying that I am making a new type of page turner and I enquired into any extra information that the could give me but al I received was a email about a page turner that I did not come across in my existing products. So I emailed the company who makes that product but I failed to receive a reply. In my questionnaire I asked other drummers who play from drum books and most of the are in bands. I received very positive feed back and help that developed my product specifically to there needs.
Once I had completed my research I had a idea of what my designs would look like. Some of my designs were not going to work or would be very difficult to make and hard to use. I decided to develop my idea that slides along the bottom of the music stand. because i think thought that it would be the easiest to operate and it is the idea that was most suited to my specification. I came across a lot of problems with my idea but I found the problems and I adapted my idea so that the problem would be solved. When I thought that I had developed my idea and solved all of the problems I made a prototype. To see if it would work or if I needed to make any more adjustments, this helped me because it gave me a much better idea on how my product would work. I developed the idea lot further than my initial idea because it did not work properly, but the problems were only minor and they were easy to fix. So I developed it a few more times and this time I got it right. I also decide to incorporate a logo into my design I think that I developed my design very well although it is quite different from my initial design, but then that shows that I developed my idea extremely well even though i came across unforeseen problems that could of only been know while manufacturing my product to show people what my product is about and what it does. I decided to use a very simple logo of the words PAGE TURNER and a drum stick on top and below. The drum sticks show that that is how you operate.

Manufacturing
I am very pleased with my final product as the process of initial ideas to developing and then manufacturing has worked very well for me. i have manufactured a product that solves that problem that was put forward and solves it well. When I was making my product and the I think it came out as a total success I have to look at my specification, both my initial and final. It must clip on to a music stand, It music be pocket size or compact for easy transport, It must turn pages quick and with minimum effort, it must be cheap and easy to make, It must be very easy to operate, It must be light therefore making it easier to transport that is my initial specification. And it is a lot of requirements but I know that it meets all of them because I designed and developed my product around those points. My final specification is pretty much the same except it goes into much more detail and I evaluated on the points, and made them more clear and specific. When developing I used theses points and tailored my design to these points. Over all I think that my page turner is a very good product which solves a problem extremely well and went through and came out the design process extremely well.
