Maryland

1629- George Calvert (Lord Baltimore) applies for a charter to colonize in America 1632- George Calvert dies and the charter is inherited by his son Cecil Calvert
Idea

was to create a Catholic haven in America

1634- Maryland colony begins with Leonard Calvert as acting governor Main settlement- St. Marys Toleration Act of 1649- allowed for religious freedom

South Carolina

King Charles II grants a charter to eight noblemen Named Carolina after King Charles II 1670- first colonists arrived Main settlement- Charles Town (Charleston) Successful colony because of excellent harbor

North Carolina

Settlers from Virginia migrated south into Carolina and started a settlement called Albemarle District Not prosperous Mostly subsistence farmers
Grew

enough food for themselves to eat

Eventually the land was divided into two colonies in 1712


When

both became Royal Colonies

Georgia

Founder- James Oglethorpe


Noble

Englishman who fought for better living conditions in English jails

Colonized in 1732 with Oglethorpe as governor Main settlement- Savannah Special for two reasons
1)

last of the original 13 colonies to be founded 2) settled as a benevolent undertaking

1752- became a Royal Colony
