DEFINITION : WAR

War is an actual, intentional and widespread armed conflict between political communities. War is a phenomenon which occurs only between political communities, defined as those entities which either are states or intend to become states (in order to allow for civil war).

humanitarian war, guerrilla war, political violence are all terms without precise definition and usually used indiscriminately or to support a point of view. What some call guerrillas other call freedom fighters; what some call humanitarian war others call unwarranted brutal attack

War is not cheap. With B-2 stealth bombers


costing US$1.3 billion (RM4.94billion) a pop, and battle tanks at US$4.3 million a piece, its no wonder that Pres. Bush allocated US$322billion for defence in the last United States budget.

VIETNAM WAR

(DRV), to gain control of southern Vietnam (RVN) both during and after their struggle for independence from France in the First Indochina War (1946 - 1954). RESULT : Peace treaty providing for U.S disengagement in 1973. Military victory of the Democratic over Republic of Vietnam forces in 1975. CASUS BELLI : Cold War escalation and nationalism TERRIRORIAL CHANGES : Reunification of Vietnam The war claimed between 2 and 5.7 million Southeast Asian lives, a large number of whom were civillians. It was also a proxy war between the U.S and its Western allies on the side of RVN, with the Soviet Union and the Peoples Republic of China supporting DRV on the other. It is often considered part of the Cold War.

COLD WAR
The period of conflict, tension and competition between the
United States and the Soviet Union and their allies from the mid 1940s until the early 1990s. U.S allies : Western Europe, Japan and Canada Soviet allies : Eastern Europe and (until the Sino-Soviet split) China. Throughout the period, the rivalry between the superpowers was played out in multiple arenas: military coalitions; ideology, psychology, and espionage; military, industrial, and technological development; costly defense spending; a massive conventional and nuclear arms race; and many proxy wars. (Korean War (1950-53), Cuban Missile Crisis (1962) and the Vietnam War (1964-1975). The Cold War drew to a close in the late 1980s following the launching of Mikhail Gorbachevs reform programs, perestroika and glasnost. The Soviet Union consequently ceded power over Eastern Europe and was dissolved in 1991.

GULF WAR
The war began with the Iraqi invasion on Kuwait on Aug 2, 1990 The invasion was met with immediate economic sanctions by
the UN against Iraq. , following Iraqi contentions that Kuwait was illegally slant-drilling petroleum across Iraqs border.

Hostilities commenced in January 1991, resulting in a decisive

Extension of power for some political parties.


Eg. Gulf War Iraq vs. Kuwait/UN (8/1990 3/1991) Saddams power in Iraq. Iraq-US War US military and economic power in Iraq.

Evokes global anger towards particular country.


It worsen anti-American Sentiment amongst the Middle East people. Due to US strong support financially and diplomatically towards Israel settlement in Palestin.
Security problem amongst Americans overseas. Leads to more aggressive action towards Americans by the extremist groups.

Increase tensions between neighbouring


countries. Between Saudi Arabia and Yaman due to Gulf War. 1 million Yemenis workers were retrenched due to Yemen support towards Iraq. Between India and Pakistan Conflict between India and Pakistan Kashmir

Migration Almost 1 million Palestinians migrate to oil producing countries. Exploitation Palestinians were underpaid compared to the Jews. They were forced to travel to work in congested busses with long travelling hours.

Loss of properties. Economic distress. Involve a huge amount of money. Market shares are affected. Increase in price for main export products. Destruction of natural resources. Death Destruction of properties. Maltreatment towards women and children. Health problems due to limited medication.
