Family: Leguminosae( Papilionioideae )
Geographical Distribution:
A large tree that commonly grows in the central, western, and southern parts of India Sri Lanka Kerala West Bengal And Assam.
Habit:
Light demander-Moderate light demander. Shade demander- Seedling and sapling are lateral shade. Tolerate over shade. Shade Frost & Snow-Young plants frost tender.
Habitat:
Edaphic conditions: Well drained soils containing a fair amount of sand and is often found on red loam with a certain amount of clay. Sandstone and laterite. Climatic conditions: Maximum shade temperate 35 to 48c. Absolute minimum from 0 to 18c. The rain fall 750-1900mm.
Penology:
Tropical dry deciduous forest. Flowering : Golden yellow flowers. June to October.
Fruiting :
Pods ripen from December to March. Dark reddish brown in color. Good seed year: Good seed years produced at intervals of 2-3 years.
Nursery Technique :
Seed can be put in bigger polybags (because of fast development of root) in February to March. The stumps can be prepared from one year old seedlings raised in primary bed. No. of pods per Kg: 1620 Seeds. Seed Collection and Storage : Pods are collected from February to May.
Pretreatment :
Soaking the seeds for 72 hours in cold water.
Plantation Techniques:
Site Selection:
Tropical and sub-tropical climates generally growing on hills or undulating lands between 150-500m.
Spacing: 2mx2m. Tending: The plantation requires weeding during the first few years. The no of weeding in case of the patch sowing is 3-4 in 1st year. Regular thinning is also necessary to promote the best growth to provide abundant space for its growth.
Cultural Operations:
Seedlings also need protection from grazing animals.
Mulching can prevent loss of soil moisture.
At least occasional watering is done during summers in case of newly planted plants for their proper survival and establishment.

Uses:
It is considered as magical for Diabetes. It is good for elephantiasis, leucoderma, cough and greyness of hair. The bark is used as an astringent.
The bruised leaves are considered useful as an external application for boils, sores and skin diseases.
The gum has been used for toothache.
