What is a Computer Virus? AComputer Virusis a relatively small software program that is attached to another larger program for the purpose of gaining access to information or to corrupt information within a computer system. Some computer viruses may be relatively harmless.

Other viruses can be deadly to the computers they infect, erasing information and hard drives, stealing data, and slowing down the entire computer system. Like other software programs, someone must create and write a computer virus; once they are created, viruses can multiply rapidly and spread themselves from computer to computer.

Characteristics:

AComputer Virusis a program that can copy itself and infect a computer without the permission or knowledge of the user. A computer virus has2 major characteristics:the ability to replicate itself, and the ability to attach itself to another computer file. Every file or program that becomes infected can also act as a virus itself, allowing it to spread to

Viruses:
Although computer scientists were aware of the theoretical possibility of computer viruses for decades, it was not until the 1980s that viruses began to gain a hold and multiply in large numbers. With the advent of the personal computer, floppy disk drives, and other portable information storage devices, it became easier to program and transfer viruses from one machine to another. Fred Cohen is often cited as the first person to use the term

There are various categories or types of computer viruses:

1. Boot Sector Virus 2. File Infection Virus 3. Network Virus 4. E-mail Virus 5. Macro Virus 6.Directory Virus 7.Polymorphic Virus 8. Overwrite Virus 9.File Infector Virus 10. Companion Virus 11. FAT Virus 12. Multipartite Virus 13.Web Scripting Virus 14. Worms 15. Trojans or Trojan Horses

How does a virus spread..??

A virus that targets a network of computers can even more easily spread since so many computers are connected and most likely will have the same vulnerability and easy access to one another. Often viruses will spread via shared folders, email or over other media that is often exposed to other computers via removable media like cds and flash drives. Because there are so many types of computer viruses, a virus can infect another computer unintentionally anytime that program is run and the virus is activated.

PREVENTION
Using online antivirus software and rescue disks Using anti spyware software Using anti adware software Using firewall to get rid of computer viruses
