Percentages

Increasing and Decreasing

Percentages
By the end of the lesson we should be able to solve questions like these: 1. Jack buys shares in BT for 556. The shares price goes up by 13%. What are his shares worth now? 2. A computer is worth 652, it has been reduced by 25% in a sale, what is it worth now?

Probability
By the end of this lesson everyone will be able to understand the language of probability and the probability scale

Most of you will be able to calculate a probability Some of you will use a two way probability table.

Probability
What is probability? Probability is the likelihood that something will happen.

Probability
We often make judgements as to whether an event will take place, and use words to describe how probable that event it. Impossible - Will never, ever happen Unlikely There is the chance it could happen but it probably wont Evens 50 / 50 chance, such as flipping a coin and getting a heads Likely There is a chance it could happen and it probably will Certain It will definitely happen

Probability
Maths also has a Probability Scale. This scale starts at 0 (impossible) and ends at 1 (certain)

Probability
Copy out the probability scale below and place the events in the right place:

Probability
When we throw a die (plural dice), we have one of six possible outcomes: 1 2 3 4 5 6

What is the chance of rolling a 1 on a dice? How many ways are there of rolling a 1? How many numbers are there in total? So we say that rolling a 1 has a 1 / 6 chance.

Probability
When we throw a die (plural dice), we have one of six possible outcomes:
1 2 3 4 5 6

How many ways are there of getting an even number? 3 even numbers, 6 total = 3/6 = 1/2

Probability

A Card is picked from a deck of 52 cards at random. What is the probability that : 1. It is a Diamond? 2. It is a Red Card?

3. It is an Ace?
4. It is the King of Hearts?

Solutions
A Card is picked from a deck of 52 cards at random. What is the probability that : 1. 2. 3. 4. It is a Diamond? It is a Red Card? It is an Ace? It is the King of Hearts?

1. 2. 3. 4.

There are 13 diamonds in the pack, so 13 / 52 = There are 26 red cards in the pack, so 26 / 52 = There are 4 aces in the pack, so 4 / 52 = 1/13 There is only 1 king of hearts in the pack, so 1/52

Probability
Ross has 5 red marbles and 11 white marbles in a bag. a. What is the probability that he pulls a red marble out of this bag? b. What is the probability that it is not red? c. Jamie adds 4 black marbles. He says that the probability of pulling a black marble from the bag is 4/16. Is he correct? Why? d. What is the probability of pulling a black marble from the bag? e. What is the probability of selecting either a red or a white marble from the bag? (challenging)
