International Medical Assistance

What is AMI?
The acronym AMI (International Medical Assistance) is a Portuguese privately owned, nonpolitical, non-profit organisation. The foundation was established by Fernando Nobre, a Portuguese doctor, after having spent six years working in missions organised by Mdecins sans Frontires in France and Belgium.

AMI has a numerous activities in Portugal

In Portugal AMI has a range of activities very broad. In 1994, AMI was a Department of Social Action whose purpose is to promotion Porta Amiga Centers, night shelter centers, a firm support home and a street team. With the growth of AMI, it felt the need to decentralize, creating many delegations. The Health Card and the Courses of Emergency Travel are beneficial activities for those who enjoy them, permitted ways for people to contribute for further work and the humanitarian objectives of AMI

In response to several sources of tension in the world, AMI has sent more than 500 volunteers to 54 countries

EMERGENCY MISSIONS

AMI achieves its mission through providing support to the following actions: Projects and actions in the area of health at national and international level; Information and public awareness initiatives; Defining national cooperation and development policies and principles in the field of health; Non-profit medical assistance, including equipment and human resources, to people who are victims of world catastrophes and crises, and victims of war; Acquisition of funds and collection of all types of contributions, national and international, aimed to ease the pursuit of funds; The foundation carries out activities in Portugal and internationally. In Portugal, it maintains eight centres that provide assistance to efforts in the fight against poverty, social exclusion and discrimination. Activities outside Portugal focusing on emergency humanitarian actions against under-development and famine. AMI also invests in social and rural micro-projects in Asia, Africa, Latin America and Europe.

Development Missions

In the poorest countries, the medical structures are usually inadequate and sometimes nonexistent. In those countries AMI develops long-term-missions, with recovery, rebuild and enlarging hospitals, installation of waiver on rural areas, combating the major endemic diseases, maternal and nutrition assistance, training local assistance, education for health and sanitation, and development of programs vaccinations
