3CDH Session 3

Cisco Discovery Home Chapter 3: Networking for Home & Small Business

Class Slides
Are there any questions from last week??? You should get a copy of the slides and use them on your computer. Your lecturer may have to navigate away from the slides from time to time and you should have them for your own study/revision purposes. To get the slides:
moodle.tafesa.edu.au
u/n Student ID p/w email address (lower case) given by you at enrolment See your lecturer now if you cant logon Then browse to the Certificate III and the 3CDH section

Objectives

Explain the concept of networking and the benefits of networks. Explain the concept of communication protocols. Explain how communication occurs across a local Ethernet network. Describe Access layer devices and communication methods on a local Ethernet network. Describe Distribution layer devices and communication methods across networks. Plan, implement, and verify a local network.

Communication Across a Local Ethernet Network Identify the importance of standardization in computer communication protocols

Communication Across a Local Ethernet Network Physical addressing identifies Source, Destination and Channel on an Ethernet Network

Communication Across a Local Ethernet Network Describe some of the basic characteristics of Ethernet for communicating across the channel

Communication Across a Local Ethernet Network Describe the need for a hierarchical design in an Ethernet Network

Communication Across a Local Ethernet Network Explain the purpose of a logical network address as the location of a host on a Network (source and destination)

Access Layer Devices and Communication Methods Describe the Purpose of the Access Layer and how it is used within an Ethernet Network

Access Layer Devices and Communication Methods Describe the function of a Hub and how it operates within an Ethernet Network

Access Layer Devices and Communication Methods Describe the function of switches and how they are used in an Ethernet network

Access Layer Devices and Communication Methods Broadcast Domains and broadcasts using hubs and switches

Distribution Layer Devices and Communication Methods Describe the reasons for expanding your network with a distribution layer

Distribution Layer Devices and Communication Methods Describe the function of routers and how they are used in the network

Distribution Layer Devices and Communication Methods Explain the concept of the default gateway

Distribution Layer Devices and Communication Methods Describe how the router keeps tract of multiple networks using routing and ARP tables

Distribution Layer Devices and Communication Methods Define the term local area network (LAN)

Distribution Layer Devices and Communication Methods Differentiate between implications of adding hosts to My local network vs. adding to a remote network

Distribution Layer Devices and Communication Methods Learn to Use Packet Tracer

Plan, Implement and Verify a Local Network Plan and document the building of a small home or small business Ethernet network

Plan, Implement and Verify a Local Network Build a virtual model of their small home or small business network

Plan, Implement and Verify a Local Network Describe the features of multifunction devices and how they are used in the network

Plan, Implement and Verify a Local Network Connect and properly document the network installation

Plan, Implement and Verify a Local Network Perform simple workgroup tasks in order to share resources

Summary

Information networks carry data using hosts as clients, servers, or both. All computer communication involves a source, destination, and channel. Rules called protocols govern computer communications. Larger networks are divided into smaller, more manageable ones using a layered hierarchical design. Each network host needs both a physical MAC address and a logical IP address. Good network design requires a network plan.

Session 3 Conclusion

Are there any questions??? Again, today was fairly heavy going, you must review and re-enforce your knowledge before the next session/class. If you struggled with today's content, remember that students are supposed to be spending equal amounts of time studying inside and outside of class The online test for chapter one, two and three should be available on the Cisco website during class so study up and take these assessments to give yourself the best chance of passing 3CDH. All of the content addressed today will be assumed knowledge next week, I advise you to get organised with the Packet Tracer software and borrow the IT Academy software and start studying/practicing
