Bees are an impor tant par t of Floridas ecosystem. Without bees, many of the farming operations throughout the state simply wouldnt be able to sur vive. Even with that in mind, though, they can of ten be a nuisance to homeowner s and cause serious problems to some. THE BUMBLEBEE
Bumblebees typically nest in the ground, but they can also be seen near your patio or deck . In some cases, theyll build nests in attics or under roof beams. If you become a threat to a bumblebee, they begin to buzz at a louder volume. They get quite aggressive when they think their nests are in danger. They have six legs and are black with yellow stripes. The best way to prevent this problem is to remove potential nesting materials from the home.
THE HONEYBEE
Honeybees are responsible for pollinating many crops in the US. They are the most recognizable type of bee. Golden with yellow brown bands, they will build natural nests in the crevices of trees, but some have found nests in the attic or the chimney of their home . They can only sting once, as their stinger tear s of f when they tr y to get away. The colonies themselves can be quite large, and removal is of ten a messy job.
IF A STING OCCURS
If you are stung by a bee , check to see if a stinger has been lef t behind. If so, gently scrape it out of the skin. Bug do not pull it. Use your fingernail or a credit card to scrape it out, then wash the area with soap & water. Apply a cold pack for a few minutes, then take acetaminophen to help control the pain. Watch for signs of an allergic reaction, which could include dif ficulty breathing, larger areas of swelling, or even fainting.
