Pentecostalism

Question: How can we tap on and utilize this power for ourselves ? Trace back to the historical experience at Pentecost to be baptized by the H.S. and to be filled with the H.S.!!!

An early Christian heresy around 160 CE They believed that divine revelation (through the H.S) was taking place right there among them and expected the end times to come very soon. The church father Tertullian became a montanist in his later years.

The First wave: By William Joseph Seymour (May 2, 1870 Sept. 28, 1922) Son of former slave in Louisiana. Student at a newly formed bible school founded by Charles Parham in Houston, TX. Removed from the parish where he had been appointed Start church in a run-down building in downtown L.A. located on 312 Azusa Street

They believed : a) Baptism in the H.S. is ordinarily an event subsequent to conversion b) Baptism in the H.S. is made evident by the sign of speaking on tongues c) All the spiritual gifts (e.g. healing) mentioned in the N.T. are to be sought and used today

"Unity in Christ": rejected the racial barriers and the then almost-universal barriers to women Sent lots of missionaries to overseas criticized by the secular media and Christian theologians for behaviors considered to be outrageous and unorthodox

personal spiritual experience allowing women in ministry doctrine of sanctification not in the doctrine of justification that Christ has not yet baptized every believer into the Spirit (Pentecost) it is possible to lose salvation

It

was a movement around 1960s to 1970s (Dennis Bennett) There were charismatic renewal movements within the mainline Protestant and Catholic churches Seek to practice all the spiritual gifts mentioned in the N.T.

You can get more of the Holy Spirit by being filled with the Holy Spirit (Ephesians 5:18). Allowing differing viewpoints on baptism in the H.S. is subsequent to conversion Differing in tongues is a sign of BHS ( it is
possible to receive the baptism and not speak in tongues)

NOT forming their own denomination

It is a renewal and revival movement It is based on experience rather than Scripture Unity is far more important than doctrine (their doctrine can vary widely) Unity is built through relationships, not doctrine.

Encourage the equipping of all believers to use the N.T. spiritual gifts today. Proclamation of the gospel should ordinarily be accompanied by signs, wonders and miracles i.e. "power evangelism" BHS at conversion; subsequent experience are called filling with the H.S.

Pentecostal Churches enjoy the fastest growth globally

After becoming Christians, some experience a spiritual renewal that Bible Study and prayer became more meaningful and effective ! Question: 1. Is it a Baptism in the H.S?
2.

When are Christians baptized in the H.S? only at conversion or anytime after conversion?

Pentecostal view: BHS is repeatable and it is associated with the speaking of tongues Supportive evidences: 1. Disciples were converted before the Pentecost, Jesus breathed the Spirit on them (Jn.20:22) 2. Jesus told them to wait for the Spirit (Acts 1:4) 3. H.S. came later on Pentecost. (Acts 2:4) 4. Some believers experience much more power after conversionBHS?

1.

2.

Samaritans converted by Philip and received H.S. later by Peter. (Acts 8:17) Believers in Ephesus did not receive H.S. at conversion and Paul prayed and H.S. came to baptize them. (Acts 19:6)

View of the Evangelistic churches 1. BHS= joining the church and become member of Christ at conversion (1 Cor.12:13) 2. Pentecost was a historic event; a fulfillment of a promise; a transition from old covenant to new covenant. This is a unique point in history... nonrepeatable.

3. The incident in John 20 was a proleptic

occurrence; a symbol. Just like the last supper.

BUT How should we understand the experience of much more power from the H.S. Stay tune for next week

Jesus and the apostles met the needs of people by healing, casting out demons, and even raising the dead. These miracles made people interested in the Good News. This is how we should evangelize

today.
