The Air Force

Background of the USAF



Started as a Signal Corps prior to World War I under the Army in the Aeronautical Division. Soon became the Signal Corps in World War I under the Aviation Section. Names went from the U.S. Army Air Service and the U.S. Army Air Corps before the attack on Pearl Harbor triggering World War II. Then, became the U.S. Army Air Forces during the conflicts overseas in World War II. Was not recognized as its own branch until September 18, 1947 as the United States Air Force.

Mission of the USAF


According to 8062 of Title 10 US Code, it is stated that the mission of the United States Air Force is:

to preserve the peace and security, and provide for the

defense, of the United States, the Territories, Commonwealths, and possessions, and any areas occupied by the United States;

to support national policy; to implement national objectives; to overcome any nations responsible for aggressive acts
that imperil the peace and security of the United States.

On the Air Forces website, they state their mission is "fly,


fight, and win in air, space, and cyberspace."

USAFs Integration with Other Branches of Service


The Air Force has always worked in close contact with all branches of service, save the Navy.

With the Army and Marine Corps,


the Air Force has supplied close air support when requested by troops on the frontlines.

Additionally, the para-rescue

men of the USAF work to save wounded soldiers and Marines in situations where medics can not get to them in time.

Size of the USAF


As of now, the populace of the Air Force is as follows:

329,638 Active Duty Personnel 68,872 Reserve Personnel 94, 597 Air Guard Personnel & 60,000 Auxiliaries, which comes out to be 553,107
personnel in total.

As far as aircraft and equipment goes, the statistics are as follows:

5,573 Aircraft (2,132 Fighters), 450 ICBMs, and 32


Satellites

USAF Locations of Primary Missions Since its origins within the


Army and through to the present, the USAF has provided crucial air support and supply control all over the world from the dogfights of Europe in World War II to Kabul in Afghanistan today. The Air Force fulfills its mission to protect the skies in all areas of the world in need of its protection.

Equipment of the Air Force


The Air Force most prevalently uses the following aircraft:

Aircraft: A-10, AC-130, B-52H, B-1B, B-2,

E-3, E-8, EC-130, F-15C, F-15E, F-16, F-22, UH-1N, HH-60, CV-22, U-2, RC-135, RQ-4, RQ-1,T-6, T-38, T-1, TG-10, C-130, C-135, KC-135, C-5, C-9, KC-10, C-17, VC-25, C-32, C-37, C-21, C-12, C-40.

The Air Force also uses the most highly-

advanced weaponry and technology in the whole world from heat-guided missiles to satellites such as the first global positioning systems.
