A computer is a machine that manipulates data according to a set of instructions. A computer is made up of multiple physical components of computer hardware, upon which can be installed an operating system and a multitude of software to perform the operators desired functions.

Though a computer comes in many different form factors, a typical personal computer consists of a case or chassis in a tower shape (desktop) and the following parts: CPU, Motherboard, Disk Drives, Memory, Cache. Systems are made up of many different parts, for example hardware, software, processors, memory etc.

The motherboard is the brain of the computer. Components directly attached to the motherboard include: The central processing unit (CPU) performs most of the calculations which enable a computer to function, and is sometimes referred to as the brain of the computer. It is usually cooled by a heat sink and fan.

The chipset mediates communication between the CPU and the other components of the system, including main memory. RAM Stores all running processes (applications) and the current running OS. RAM Stands for Random Access Memory The BIOS includes boot firmware and power management. The Basic Input Output System tasks are handled by operating system drivers.

Hardware is the physical parts of the computer system the parts that you can touch and see. A motherboard, a CPU, a keyboard and a monitor are all items of hardware.

Ms. Yadnya Desai

Your hardware is all of the parts that make up your body: bones, muscles, skin, blood, etc.

Software is a collection of instructions that can be run on a computer. These instructions tell the computer what to do. Software is not a physical thing (but it can be of course stored on a physical medium such as a CD-ROM).

Ms. Yadnya Desai

An operating system such as Windows XP or Mac OS X, applications such as Microsoft Word, and the instructions that control a robot are all examples of software.

Ms. Yadnya Desai

Your software is all of your thoughts and mental processes: these are the instructions that tell your physical body what to do

Computer hardware is the physical components that make up the computer system. Hardware is useless without software to run on it. Software is instructions that tell computer hardware what to do. Software is useless unless there is hardware to run it on.
Ms. Yadnya Desai 11

Your physical body cannot function without your thoughts. And your thoughts need a physical body to exist within

For a computer system to be useful it has to consist of both hardware and software.
