This Standard contains the denominations of the international dictionary of definitions for gear tooth geometry,
Part 1 being concerned with general denominations, Part 2 with cylindrical gears and cylindrical gear pairs, Part 3 with
bevel gears and bevel gear pairs as well as with hypoid gears and hypoid gear pairs, and Part 4 with worm gear pairs.
‘Supplementary Sheet 1 to DIN 3998 lists the keywords of the denominations in English and French in alphabetical
order. For connection with Recommendation ISO/R 1122 — 1969 issued by the International Organization for
Standardization (ISO), see Explanations.
The sequence of the denominations and the consecutive numbering in DIN 3998 Part 1 to Part 4 agree with
Ison 1122.
‘The denominations are stated in English and Franch.

Explanations
This Standard lays down the English technical terminology relating to gear teeth in order to
facilitate unterstanding and orderly arrangement of terms, The sequence of technical terms and
their consecutive numbering in Part 1 to Part 4 as well as the additional French denominations
agree with the Recommendation issued by the International Organization for Standard-
ization (ISO)
ISO/R 1122 — 1969/Add. 2 ~ 1972")
Glossary of gears; geometrical definitions, worm gears
Vocabulaire des engrenages; definitions geometriques, engrenages a vis
In this Standard certain technical denominations additional to those stated in
IS0/R 1122 ~ 1969/Add. 2 — 1972 have boen included where this appeared necessary for the
sake of complete coverage. Moreover, in some cases existing expressions have been added in
brackets, In al cases the non-bracketed terms are the ruling ones.
DIN 3998 is subdivided into Part 1 for general definitions, Part 2 for cylindrical gears and
cylindrical gear pairs, Part 3 for bevel gears and bevel gear pairs as well as hypoid gears and
hhypoid gear pairs, and Part 4 for worm gear pairs. In addition, in Supplementary Sheet 1 to
DIN 3998 the keywords of the denominations in English and French are listed in alphabetical
order and with the serial number under which the denominations appear in Part 1 to Part 4.
Recommendation ISO/R 1122 ~ 1969/Add. 2 ~ 1972 contains — like, for example, the Swiss
Standard VSM 15 622 also —not only the denominations but also the definitions for geometrical
specification factors for gears and gear pairs. The definitions have not been included in
DIN 3998 bacause the definitions and specification factors are laid down in DIN 868, DIN 3960,
DIN 3971 and DIN 3975,
‘Standardization of the denominations in all DIN standards dealing with gear teeth is envisaged
on the basis of the present survey DIN 3998.
‘Some of the illustrations have been taken from the standards VSM 16 622 and NEN 6276 with
‘the approval of the Swiss Standards Association and the Netherlands Standards Institution
respectively.
