A gift to Cmpulung
In 1946, by donation, came into the heritage of the Romanian Academy five massive, leather-bound albums, containing over 700 sepia photographs, depicting Cmpulung and its surroundings. On the first page of each album was written a simple sentence: A gift from Nicolae Th. tefnescu to the Romanian Academy. By this gift, the author of the photos could not suspect that, over the years, his noble gesture of donating an impressive collection of photographs taken in the interwar period would transform into a huge gift to Cmpulung, when the album that sums them up was released. Thus, after more than half a century, Nicolae Th. tefnescus photos come out of the archive with a much enhanced value; it is the value of a long time sunken ship gains by being brought to the surface, from the depths. In interwar Cmpulung, this odd looking traveler, always wearing in his jacket pocket a Kodak camera, could be spotted, especially in summer, walking along the streets or taking to Drcetilor roadway, or to Creioara hill or to Groani village. From time to time he would stop, would take a picture or take out a well-sharpened pencil, to sketch quickly an interesting figure at the fair, a shepherds or teamsters face, a merry wife spotted while gathering hay or bleaching cloths in the pond. The mysterious traveler had the foreigners fresh eye; he always knew when to linger on, what to capture on the cameras retina, with whom to talk and what to ask. What had no value for those around him, for him would represent a document. This is how the unusual Nicolae Th. tefnescu, whose biography is little known today, must have appeared in the eyes of the locals. He was the son of Theodor tefnescu (1842-1909), famous Accounting professor in Bucharest, Secretary-General in the Ministry of Public Instruction under the ministry Nicolae Kretzulescu, director of the School of Commerce in Bucharest and since 1880 Deputy Governor of the National Bank of Romania, until the end of his life. Reaching the peak of his career, around 1900 he took a villa in Cmpulung, on Matei Basarab Street, not far from the Military Club, and
he would come there from Bucharest whenever he had a moment of leisure. According to other information, King Carol the First himself would have granted him this villa, as a sign of appreciation for his work with the National Bank. From the marrriage with Sevastia, cousin of the painter Nicolae Grigorescu, the deputy governor had no less than nine children. One of them, Nicolae Th. tefnescu, would have felt, after some time, more and more attracted to the city at the foot of Iezer and Ppua Mounts. Avid traveller, member of the Romanian Tourists Society, he would find at Cmpulung the peace of summer holidays and the tranquility for reading of his favourite poets, among which Rimbaud, Mallarm and Valry, after having visited and diverted himself for years with Paris monuments, chateaux on the Loire Valley or Italys museums. Living in the villa inherited from his father, breathing the fres air of the nearby tefnescu Park, that his father had donated to Cmpulung community, Nicolae Th. tefnescu frequently returned to his endeared town, and in 1944 decided to leave Bucharest for good and settle permanently in Cmpulung. He lived here the simple joys of life, which are accessible to a cultivated mind only, until his disappearance in 1953. As C. D. Aricescu once aspired his monograph The History of

ci rar gseti ora unde pieptul respir mai in voie, unde ochiul e mai desftat, iar mintea mai mulumit de ceea ce ntlnete la fiecare pas. i dai bine seama ct preuiete oraul cnd, ajuns seara din cmpia ncins de aria soarelui, sorbi adierea rcoroas i mblsmat de boarea florilor, aa cum nsetat ai sorbi paharul aburit de apa izvorului rece. Iar dac, dup ce ploaia a splat cerul i tot ce-i pe pmnt, din Creioara, din dealul Gruiului, i arunci ochii n zarea strlucitoare i lai privirea s alunece pe muscele, pe albul i roul caselor nirate de-a lungul, de la biserica Sf. Gheorghe la turnul Mnstirii pn-n Schei departe, mulumirea ptrunde ntreaga fiin. Nicolae Th. tefnescu, Prin Cmpulung i pe muscelele lui (1946)
or rarely one finds a town where breathing is more free, eyes more delighted and thought more content of what is encountered at each step taken. One can so well appreciate the worthiness of the town when, having arrived in the evening from the torrid, sunburnt plain, one sips the cool breeze, scented with a floral aroma, as if in great thirst one would sip a cup of cold spring water. And if, after rain had washed the sky and all that lies on earth, from Creioara, from Grui, you glance to the shining horizon and let your sight slip over the smooth heights of the hills, over the white and the red of houses strung along from St. George's Church to the tower of the Monastery, up to the farther Schei, contentment embraces your whole being. ac oamenii locului socotesc vinerea i duminica zile de rugciune, ziua de smbt e hrzit pieei i oborului, cnd vine lumea s cumpere ce trebuie pentru praznicul de duminic i pentru zilele sptmnii. Cte alte nevoi nu te mbrncesc! Fetele se ntrec s ajung anii mritiului, flcii, de cum s-au liberat din armat, sunt i ei gata de nsurtoare, i casa nou cere multe. f locals consider Friday and Sunday as days of prayer, Saturday is destined for the trade fair and cattle market, when people come to buy what is needed for the Sunday feast and the rest of the days of the week. How many other needs do not get one pushed! Girls are competing to reach the marriage years; lads, as soon as they are released from the army, are ready to become grooms, and a new house requires so much. At least one day in seven, according to ones power and countenance, people try to forget their troubles, and it happens to be part of a merrymaking, or one baptism, to receive any distant kin, or autumn knocks at your gate. And there is nothing you can do but to store up in time, considering the long winter months to come. Nicolae Th. tefnescu, Cmpulung and Its Hills (1946)

s you digress from the hearth of our borough, the few fancy houses lined, with shops sticking one to each other, with hotels, with a sergeant of the street, you soon find yourself among peasants, in the midst of their lives and jobs. Not easy to get really close to this life, unfathomable for a long time, maybe ever. In any case, dont think you should to start towards it with conquerors steps, on the contrary, walk with propriety, with humanity and the trust that eventually you will be rewarded. You will be challenged as to how much you cherish as a kin in your own kind, how bound you are to the land that you were born in, with its people, with how they sing their story with vivid testimony in front of you, not the letter of the book or charter that does not ask you to account the brotherhood that you praise with, when you feel well. i acolo, ca i pe drumuri i-e lesne s bagi de seam c asupra oamenilor din prile Muscelului sufl duh de credin.
here, as on the roads, it is easy to for you to notice that over the people in these parts the spirit of faith blows. It can not be purely Christian wherever it may be -, but whatever, it is about faith, as it was kept in time. If Pentecost remind of the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles, the word Rusalii comes from the pagan feast of flowers, the same as Snzienele, the fairies day when women gather field flowers in their honor. It is not appropriate to smile from ones proud heights, seeing how persistently the ancient tradition is preserved. And do not think only Pitulan from Valea Foii has the right to read Creed and Our Father on Sundays and holidays, in the lectern. Cmpulung has its own pious people, who know by heart the sacred books, always ready to unravel their content. Nicolae Th. tefnescu, Cmpulung and Its Hils (1946)

oments melt one by one and soon summer will end with the first weeks of September. The crocus blossoms on the hills and all through the gardens folks gather haystacks, with freshly mown grass penetrating breeze. And time will come for potato nests, the term for maize and pumpkins, walnuts day. Walnuts are good in winter, during Christmas fast, when you take your power and warmth from eating hot polenta with walnut oil. Days always pass by and one fine morning you will be childishly surprised, glazing at the white stripe extending in a thick layer all over the height of Iezer Mount. Lalu and Boldu Mounts are dusty with snow, which strengthens the rumor that it would have started snowing up to Bughea. You wonder in vain; everything and all were prepared to receive winter.
