Ele sunt unite pe laturi, lsnd 2 deschizaturi prin care

ies, capul i membrele anterioare, iar la partea posterioar, membrele posterioare i coada. esutul este format
din plci osoase bine sudate, acoperite de plci cornoase. Coastele i vertebrele sunt concrescute cu carapacea.
Capul, gtul, picioarele i coada sunt acoperite de o piele
solzoas de culoare cenuie. Pe lng organele de sim,
asemntoare cu ale oprlei, exist 2 flci nvelite ntr-o
materie cornoas ce formeaz un fel de cioc, cu margini
tioase i fr dini. Masculul se deosebeste vizibil de femela, in general prin dimensiunea cozii care este mai mare la mascul si a plastronului care la mascul este concav .
Sunt animale greoaie, care se deplaseaz ncet din cauza
conformaiei i a esutului. Cele 4 membre sunt scurte,
aezate lateral i terminate cu degete scurte, prevzute cu
gheare. Se hrnete cu ierburi salbatice, fructe, insecte,
melci i viermi pe care le taie cu marginea ciocului. Respiraia i nmulirea este la fel ca la erpi i oprle.

4 Caretul
Caretul sau estoasa de mare ajunge la 1-2 m lungime i
200 kg. Are carapacea mai puin bombat, cu plci osoase mai puin sudate. Picioarele sunt adevrate vsle care
i servesc la not. nmulirea se face prin ou pe care le
depune n nisipul de pe plaj. Sunt vnate pentru carne,
grsime i ou.

Sunt specii protejate de lege, detinerea, comercializarea, donarea sau cadonarea acestor specii este interzisa
si sanctionata penal, dar poate facuta doar daca testoasa are documentul care arata ca e nascuta si crescuta in
captivitate: certicat CITES GALBEN (nu alb).
