FRICTION COUPLING
- VNPX 510

Fri<tion blocks lnstead of rigid coupling this machine is normally

Friction pads equipped with friction coup[ing and standard type
of motor.

The friction blocks can be either two three or

four.

Two blocks = standard Íor 50H2.

Four blocks = standard Íor 50 Hz.

ln this case the starting current will be very high and
a slar-delta switch is recommended to be installalled.

The accelelaration time after a discharge is short.

Three blocks = for 50 Hz (non-standard).

For a direct start the four blocks are removed and
three of these refitted symmetrically, using the holes
already drilled for this purpose.

6ives a lower starting currànt but a longer

accelaration time after a discharge than with four
blocks.

OPEMTING WATER SYSTEM 4

. ONE CONNECTION
lnitiation of ejection

The pump (2) is started and operating water is now supplied under
overpressure. This will force the level in the paring chamber inwards to
radius R5, where overflow takes place through channels leading to the
upper side of operating slide (c).

The chamber in the dosing ring (e) will be filled above the operating
slide (c).

Since the ingoing flow exceeds the drainage through nozzle 91, a
liquid force F3 witl build up.

When force F3 exceeds spring force F, the operating slide (c) will move
downwards uncovering the drain valves (d).

The compartment belowthe sliding bowl bottom (a) is drained, force

F2 decreasing and force F3 increasing.

When the level in the chamber in dosing ring (e) above operating slide
(c) reaches the radius R4, an overflow to the chamber beneath the
operating slide begins through the channels (i).

SEDIM ENT EJ ECTION FUNCTION

(Operating water system 4,

Ejection and closing

The compartment below sliding bowl bottom (a) is drained and force
F2 becomes smaller than force F1.

Sliding bowl bottom (a) moves downwards and sediment ejection

takes place through ports (h) in the bowl wall.

When the chamber in dosing ring (e) below operating slide (c) becomes
filled, the force F4 together with spring force F becomes larger than
force F3. Consequently the operating slide is pressed upwards and
closes drain valves (d).

The sliding bowl bottom (a) begins closing when the drainage on the
underside ceages.

The chambers in dosing ring (e) are drained through nozzles §1 and §2.

The compartment below sliding bowl bottom (a) is reÍilled 1o level R3,
whereby the initial force F2 is reestablished. The pump is stopped.

The separating space above sliding bowl bottom (a) is filled. Force F1
increases.

Finishing the closing

Force F2 now exceeds F1 and thus locks the sliding bowl bottom (a) in
the closing position.

The compartment below and the separating space above the sliding

2. Sensing disc
3. Sensing chamber
4. Sediment indication disc
5. Sediment space
6. Paring chamber
7. Paring disc
8. Recirculationchannel
9. Airigas supply channel

During separation, sediment collects in the sediment spa(e (5) (right

side). The treated liquid flows into the paring chamber (6), írom which
it is pumped out by the paring disc (7). Liquid flowing along the top of
the sediment indication disc (4) passes into the sensing chamber (3) and
is returned to the separator inlet pipe through the sensing disc,
channel (8). The level of liquid in the sensing chamber (which is depen-
dent on throughput, back pressure and sediment accumulation) is
measured by a small stream of gas fed into the chamber through (1)
and (9).

lf throughput and back pressure are constant, the gas pressure will also
be constant. When sediment blocks the flow of liquid along the top of
the sediment indication disc (see 5, left side) the level in the sensing
chamber rnoves outwards as liquid is still pumped back to the inlet pipe
through the recirculation <hannel (8) in the sensing disc. As a conse-
quence.oÍthisthe pressure in the airlgas pipe willdrop and when it has--
reached'a certain value, a signal tells the programme equipmentto
start a discharge cycle.

CLEANING FUNCTION

MANUAL CLEANING How often the bowl will need to be disassembled

for cleaning depends on the demands placed on
cleanliness and the properties of the sludge.

lf the process liquid contains corrosive substances,

the bowl parts must be cleaned thoroughly after
separation.

Use tools for cleaning that will not damage the

surface finish oÍ the bowl Parts.

See also special washing programme-

BOWL AND LOCK RING

A soft brush must be used when the bowl needs
to be cleaned mechanically on the inside.
Clean the lock rinp and lubricate. (See MR.)

-'s: check that there is a water flow in the lower sight glass. t
As the bowl accelerates a positive pressure (approx. 1 bar ) will be noticed on
the pressure gauge. This indicates that the seal is being lubricated during the
sta rt-u p.

By means of thermistors in the motor windings, the motor will stop

automatically ií overheated during start-up in Y-connection. Only for
machine with "Control-torque motor".

Check that:
operêting water pump is running
val ve V 1 5 (by-pass valve) is closed and valves V 1 6 (make -up water) and V I 2
(acket cooling water ) are open.

Check that:
the pressure regulator V4 (Íor make- up water) is adjusted to approx.0, 35
bar.

When the machine has reached nearly full speed , the starter switches over
from star to delta connection. Only for machine with "Control-torque
motor'.

i
Wait until the bowl has reached full speed (the ammeter value decreases írom
its start-up value).

OPERATION

supports on spindle top. Now screw up the
screw so that bowl body sinks down on the
spindle cone.

Bowl body screws

Rotate the bowl body slowly and align it so

that the screw holes in its bottom are exactly

Bowl hood seal ring

lf the seal ring in bowl hood needs replacement,

fit the new ríng as follows:
Press the ring into groove in lower edge of bowl
hood with a straight board (1"x5'), which is
placed across the ring. Hammer carefully the
board right above the ring, first on one side and
then on the other. Turn board around
successively and drive ring into groove as
evenly as possible.
Note! lf a new seal ring of nylon (polyainide) is
too wide when mounted, this is due to absorption
of moisture. lt will recover correct dimensions

GENERAL ADVICE

THE MAINTENANCE
cotucEPT A centriÍugal separator is capable of generating great forces in alldirec-
tions and is subject to the law oÍ centrifugal Íorce.

The separator, like any other machine is subject to wear' Corrosion'

erosion and just ordinary wear due to normal operation, all take their
roll.
parts
To ensure saÍe and eÍficient operalion over a long period, certain
will by and by have to.be replaced. Proper care and maintenance will
prolong the liÍe of the separator and ensure good performance'

eroded, or improperly
lí the parts oÍ the machine are worn,
assembled, the íorces generated may cause machine break-
down and injury to Personnel.

Forms of maintenance Two f orms of maintenance exist: PREVENT IVE MAINTENANCE and
ined
coH FECT IVE MAINTENANCE. Preventive maintenance can be def
and planned, corrective maintenance cannot. This instruction book takes
primarily preventive maintenance into consideration, but it also covers
the normal requirements for corrective maintenance'

lVlai ntenance strategy The customer decides what Íorm of maintenance or combinatiOn oÍ Íorms
shall be put inlo pÍactice, depending on local conditions' The following
specif ication shows the difÍeient toims of maintenance in relation
to the

GENERAL ADVICE

Reconditioning kit The reconditioning kit is named RS. This kit includes the parts that nor-
mally have a comparatively long service life. Any replacement of a part
in the separator by the corresponding part in the RS-kit must be based
upon an inspection and a judgement whether the part is expected to
function satisfactorily during another MS-period or not.

RS-kit contains
o Parts for the worm gearing
o Shafts
o Springs
o Bearing housings etc.

Stock of spares at lS-kit shall always be available at the operation place.

the custorner Ms-kit should always be available at the operation place.

ffi
BS-kit is recommended to be available at the operation place.

lf special difficulties exist,such as

o a long distance to the service unit

4-*=.s\".çft:7;c o commercial problems
= o demands {or a high produ*ion availability

all three kits should be available.

Safety inspections Preventive maintenance

The directions Íor maintenance prescribe the safety inspections

which, with preventive maintenance, are periodically followed up
by the user. ln doing so he will discover any defects before safety
q is jeopardized.

o Co rrective ma intenance

With corrective maintenance the safety inspections according to the

directions for maintenance must be carried out specially from a
separate program by the user.

so 4936E
GENERAL ADVICE

VIBRATION

Abnormal vibration or noises are clues that something is wrong. Stop

the machine and look for the cause.
lf vibration analyzing equipment is available, use this equipment to
periodically check and record the magnitude oÍ vibration.

CLEANING E When using chr:micaI cleaninE aEeftts *serve general rules and
supplier's recommendations as 10 ventilation, personal protec'
tion etc.

Frame/motor
Never wash down a separator with a direct water streÍlm. Totally en'
closed motors can be damaged by direct hosing to the same extent
as open motors and even more than those, because:

1. many operators believe thal these motors are sealed, and

normally they are no1.
2. a water jet played on these motors will produce an internal
vacuum. which will suck the water between thÉ metal-to-metal
contacl surÍaces into the windinls, and this water cannot escape.
3. water directed on a hot motor may cause condensation, and
subsequentty produce grounding and internal corrosion.

The exteríal cleaning of the machine should be restricted to brushing

sponging or wiping while the motor is running or is still hot.

l.

Be careíul even when the motor is equipped with a protecling hood.

Never play a water jet on the ventilation grill of the hood.

so 1679 E
, DISASSEMBLY. CHECK POINTS. ASSEMBLY

ln the Íollowing chapters it is described how to disassemble and asemble the separator in the correct
order by means oÍ the proper tools.

ln the Spare Parts Catalogue (SPC) the article number Íor each part is stated. The page numbers in the
Spare Parts Catalogue coirespond to the chapter numbers in the following part of this book'

REMEMBER:
r Handle the parts with care. Protect them against damage, dust
and dirt. Make sure that the parts are clean and free from
burrs when mounting.

Never place parts directly on the Íloor. Use a clean rubber

mat, Íibreboard or a suitable pallet as base.

The lifting eyes mounted on the outlet cover can be used for
lifting the Írame hood, but not for the complete machine.

Position the hoisting device very exactly when assembling and

disassembling. Nwer use a hoisting device that works jerkity.
Use a lifting hook wirh catch.
An electrically operated hoist should have two speeds: 1.5
maer/minute and 6 meteríminute, approx. The lower speed
is used nüen lifting parts out of and into the machine.

IMPORTANT HINTS

Lock ring

Lift out the lock ríng and place it with the top
face downwards. This will reduce the risk of
damage (scratches) on the face in contact with
the bowl hood.
Protect this face with plastic Íilm etc.

Bowl hood seal ring

lf seal ring in lower edge of bowl hood-needs--

replacement, force out the ring-by meansof a
pin, inserting it alternately in the holes
intended for this purpose. When the seal ring
-l-.
has been forced out of the groove under the
holes, pull it off by hand.

Sliding bowl bottom seal ring

lf seal ring (1) oÍ sliding bowl bottom should

be replaced and compressed air is available, turn
bottom upside down and inject compressed air
through hole on underside. This will press the
ring outwards far enough to be easily gripped.

SEPARATOR BOWL CHECK POINTS
DISC SET PRESSURE

lnsuÍÍicient pressure in the disc set may

aÍfect the bowl balance. which in turn
will cause abnormal machine vibration.

'The lock ring (1) should press the bowl hood (2)
f irmly against the bowl body (3), the hood in
turn should excert a pressure on the disc set (4)
clamping the latter in place.

lf the lock ring can be tightened without resist'

ance until the bowl hood lies tightly against the
bowl body, the disc set pressure must be in-
creased. Correct pressure is obtained when it is
possible to tighten the lock ring so far by hand
that mark Ô ón lock ring is positioned 600 -
90o before'mark Ô on bowl body. To attain
this end: add the smallest number possible of
discs to the top of bowl disc set beneath the
top disc.
