Parlamentul European este unul din organele Comunitatile Europene. ncepnd cu anul 1979 este ales direct, o dat la 5 ani, prin alegeri generale, libere i secrete. n perioada 19521976 membrii Parlamentului European erau numi i de c tre parlamentele statelor membre. Parlamentul European este reprezentantul democratic al intereselor celor 450 de milioane de locuitori ai Uniunii Europene. Parlamentul European are trei sedii: la Strasbourg, Bruxelles i Luxemb urg. Structurile politice existente n rile membre se oglindesc n rndul frac iunilor politice de la nivelul Parlamentului European. n acest parlament exist apte frac iuni i o serie de deputa i independen i. Deputa ii din Parlamentul European provin din circa 160 de partide politice diferite, n care ace tia sunt membri n rile lor de origine. Parlamentului European num r acum 736 de deputa i.

Presedintele reprezint Parlamentul n situa ii oficiale i n rela iile interna ionale, prezideaz edin ele plenare i ntlnirile Biroului i Conferin ei Pre edin ilor. Biroul este organul regulator care este responsabil cu bugetul Parlamentului i r spunde de chestiuni administrative, de organizare i de personal. Pe lng Pre edinte i cei paisprezece vicepre edin i, acesta mai include cinci chestori care ocup o pozi ie consultativ n chestiunile administrative i financiare legate de Membri i de Statutul acestora. Membrii Biroului sunt ale i cu un mandat de doi ani i jum tate.

Conferinta Presedintilor cuprinde Pre edintele Parlamentului i pre edin ii grupurilor politice; ea este organismul politic conduc tor al Parlamentului. Conferin a elaboreaz agenda pentru sesiunile plenare, stabile te orarul activit ii organismelor parlamentare i termenii de referin i dimensiunea comisiilor i delega iilor parlamentare.

The flag of Europe consists of a circle of 12 golden (yellow) stars on an azure background. It is the flag and emblem of the European Union (EU) andCouncil of Europe (CoE). It is also often used to indicate eurozone countries, and, more loosely, to represent the continent of Europe or the countries of Europe independent of any of these institutions. The number of stars does not vary according to the members of either organisation as they are intended to represent all the peoples of Europe, even those outside European integration. The flag was designed by Arsene heintz and Paul Lvy in 1955 for the CoE as its symbol, and the CoE urged it to be adopted by other organisations. In 1985 the EU, which was then the European Economic Community (EEC), adopted it as its own flag (having had no flag of its own before) at the initiative of theEuropean Parliament. The flag is not mentioned in the EU's treaties, its incorporation being dropped along with the European Constitution, but it is formally adopted in law. Despite it being the flag of two separate organisations, it is often more associated with the EU due to the EU's higher profile and heavy usage of the emblem. The flag has also been used to represent Europe in sporting events and as a pro-democracy banner outside the Union. It has partly inspired other flags, such as those of other European organisations and those of states where the EU has been heavily involved (such as Bosnia and Herzegovinaand Kosovo).
