2. String Band Music

Shootin' to the rhythm of the range, high-falutin' rhythm you can't change
In the land of cattle the six-gun is law, and you get a medal if you shoot your mother-in-law
So keep shootin' to the rhythm, high-falutin' rhythm, shootin' to the rhythm of the range.
II. RĂDĂCINI NEGRE (AFRO-AMERICANE)
1) "Blue Notes"
americane
- blue note, NU blues note!
Doar pt. că o muzică are blue
notes nu înseamnă că e blues, ci cel mult că e "bluesy".
Oh Death have mercy, oh Death have mercy, oh Death, just spare me over another year.
What is this that I can't see, with cold icy hands all over me?
Stretch my eyes and stretch my limbs and this is the way that death begins.
Golden Eagle Gospel Singers - "Shake Mother's Hand for Me" (1930s)
- gospel tânguitor, mult mai "bluesy"
Well, oh Lord
Oh, my Lord
Have mercy on me
Many nights I lay in torment
And my pillow wet with tears
I'm thinking of my burden
You'll help me more down through the years
If it wasn't for your grace
Many times, Lord, I'd quit this race
Oh, you said you'll, you'll fight my battle
Yes, if I just, Lord, keep still
== BLUES ==
Bessie Smith - "Empty Bed Blues" (1928)
(1:18:) "He's a deep sea diver with a stroke that can't go wrong / He's a deep sea diver with a stroke
that can't go wrong / He can stay at the bottom and his wind holds out so long"
- trei acorduri: I, IV, V, în următoarea progresie: I-I-I-I // IV-IV-I-I // V-V(sau IV)-I-I
=== prima generaţie (anii '20-'30) ===
1. Country blues
- mediu rural
- multe stiluri regionale: Mississippi Delta Blues (Charley Patton, Robert Johnson), Texas
Blues (Blind Lemon Jefferson), Piedmont Blues (Rev. Gary Davis)
a You can run you can run, tell my friend Willie Brown
a You can run you can run, ba[be], tell my friend Willie Brown
b [Th]at I got the cross road blues this morning lord, babe I'm sinkin' down.
a Ohh-oh, that must have been a bed bug, baby a chinch can't bite that hard
a Ohh-oh, that must have been a bed bug, honey a chinch can't bite that hard
b Ask my sugar for fifty cents, she said "Lemon, ain't a dime in the yard"
a Mama, that's all right, mama that's all right for you
a Mama, that's all right, mama that's all right for you
b Mama, that's all right, most any ol' way you do
1. Jump bands
ului (1950-prezent)
Versiunea 1946:
She's got eyes like diamonds she shines like lines like gold
She's got eyes like diamonds she shines like lines like gold
Each time she loves me she sends my mellow soul.
Well Rebecca get your basket and let's go down to the woods
Well Rebecca get your basket and let's go down to the woods
We won't pick no berries but we'll come back feelin' good.
(yes, yes ... but all right then ... bye bye ...)
We're gonna rock, rock this joint, we're gonna rock, rock this joint
We're gonna rock, rock this joint, we're gonna rock, rock this joint
We're gonna rock, rock this joint, we're gonna rock this joint tonight.
We're gonna rock, rock this joint, we're gonna rock, rock this joint
We're gonna rock, rock this joint, we're gonna rock, rock this joint
We're gonna rock, rock this joint, we're gonna rock this joint tonight.
We're gonna blow down the walls and tear up the floor,
Until the law comes knockin at the door.
We're gonna rock, rock this joint, we're gonna rock, rock this joint
We're gonna rock, rock this joint, we're gonna rock this joint tonight.
We're gonna rock, we're gonna rock, we're gonna rock, we're gonna rock,
We're gonna rock this joint tonight.
2. Electric blues
== ERA SWING-ului (ca. 1935-55) ==
"craze": rock 'n' roll.
pian: Duke Ellington, Count Basie
clarinet: Benny Goodman, Artie Shaw
tobe: Chick Webb, Gene Krupa
trompetă: Bunny Berigan, Dizzy Gillespie
trombon: Tommy Dorsey, Glenn Miller
basului); tobe
Grade de "hot":
Benny Goodman - "King Porter Stomp" (1935)
vs.
Fletcher Henderson - "King Porter Stomp" (1933)

== dezvoltarea tehnologiilor mass-media ==
-- programe de radio FM & show-uri TV = esenţiale în promovarea noii muzici a anilor '50
(rock 'n' roll-ul)
== schimbarea etichetelor stilistice ==
-- hillbilly devine peiorativ, şi se înlocuieşte cu country & western
-- aceeaşi poveste cu muzica neagră: race records devine acum rhythm & blues, sau R&B.
"negroes" şi "the race". Nu apăruse încă "political correctness"...)
== schimbarea de pieţe ==
-- anii '50 = schimbare radică de piaţă (market) economică şi muzicală. Adolescenţii devin
== prosperitate economică ==
-- anii '50 = perioadă de mare vitalitate în economia americană, ajutată de o infrastructură
În '44, "Columbus Day Riot" în New

Well meet me in a hurry, behind the barn, don’t be afraid I’ll do you no harm
I want you to bring my rockin’ shoes, ‘cause tonight I’m gonna rock away all my blues
I heard the news, there’s good rockin’ tonight.
Well the Deacon Jones and Nelda Brown, two of the slickest cats in town
They’ll be there, just wait and see, stomping and jumping at the jamboree
Crying hey man, there’s good rockin’ tonight.
Well Sweet Lorraine, Sioux City Sue, Sweet Georgia Brown, Caledonia too
They’ll all be there shouting like mad, crying hoy sister, hoy sister, ain’t you glad
We heard the news, there’s good rockin’ tonight.

Johnnie Ray and the Four Lads - "The Little White Cloud" (1951)
- acompaniat de un swing band + backing vocals (The Four Lads, grup canadian);
formă de Tin Pan Alley
(A) Most any afternoon at five, we'll be so glad we're both alive,
Then maybe fortune will complete her plan, that all began with cocktails for two.
While I was walkin' down the beach, one bright and sunny day
I saw a great big wooden box a-floatin' in the bay
I pulled it in and opened it up and much to my surprise
Oh, I discovered a X X X right before my eyes
Oh, I discovered a X X X right before my eyes
She was afraid to come out of the locker, she was as nervous as she could be
She was afraid to come out of the locker, she was afraid that somebody would see
One, two, three, four, tell the people what she wore
It was an itsy, bitsy, teenie, weenie, yellow polka-dot bikini, that she wore for the first time today
An itsy, bitsy, teenie, weenie, yellow polka-dot bikini, so in the locker she wanted to stay
Two, three, four, stick around we'll tell you more
She was afraid to come out in the open, and so a blanket around she wore
She was afraid to come out in the open, and so she sat bundled up on the shore
Two, three, four, tell the people what she wore
Now she is afraid to come out of the water, and I wonder what she's gonna do
Now she is afraid to come out of the water, and the poor little girl's turning blue
Two, three, four, tell the people what she wore
[verse]
Say, what kind of beat is that? man, it really spins my hat
Doesn't sound like boogie woogie, but it's really got the beat.
Sounds to me like it's in four, let me hear it just once more
While I latch on to that rhythm, 'cause a solid four's my beat.
[chorus]
(A) Some folks like to hear eight beat rhythm, I don't go for that stuff no more,
Any time you really want to send me, bounce me brother with a solid four.
(A) Come on in, while the whole place is jumpin', ev'ry body's out on the floor,
If you want to keep the rhythm pumpin', bounce me brother with a solid four.
(B) The boogie woogie was never like this, we've got a new beat that no one can miss
If boogie woogie sent like I think it did, four to the bar will flip your lid.
(A) Move the tables and roll the rug up, shut the windows and lock the door
While I try to dig the 'Li'l Brown Jug' up, bounce me brother with a solid four.

America. Câteva exemple:
Olavi Virta & Harmony Sisters - "Sinitaivas" (1940s) - FINLANDA, combină sweet swing
cu tango; Virta - cântăreţ specializat în tango-uri, un gen extrem de popular în Finlanda;
Harmony Sisters - grup de vocal harmony din anii '40 capabil să cânte în 10 limbi diferite;
Four Freshmen - "It's a Blue World" (1951)
Hi-Lo's - "Autumn in New York" (1960)
- standard compus de Vernon Duke (1934)
