Intr-o dimineata, plecand la padure ca sa aduca ceva crengi uscate pentru casa, vazu
intr-un copac un cuib de pasare , cum nu mai vazuse pana atunci. Se mira nitel, apoi vru
sa stie ce fel de pasare sa fie aceea care avea astfel de cuib. Incet , incet, el se sui pana
la cuib si se uita intr-insul; pasarea nu era; cand, ce sa vaza? Un ou ca de gaina. Oul
era atat de frumos si de lucios incat parca nu putea sa-l atinga. In cele din urma il lua .
Dupa ce se dete jos, culese cateva uscaturi si pleca spre casa.
Copiii, cand vazura oul, sarira de bucurie si femeia lui se mira sa vaza astfel de ou...

The Lone Wolf had led them for a year now. He had fallen twice into a wolf trap in his youth and

îmi ziceam.
Si culmea! Ieri dimineaţă, când m-am trezit, alb peste tot. Căţelul alerga roată ca un nebun, intra

Când, colea spre ziua, când somnul e mai dulce, Făt-Frumos auzi un zgomot ca de un stol de păsări care se
apropie. Trase cu urechea şi simţi că cineva jumuleşte pomul de mere. Scoase o săgeată, o aşeză în arc şi

The car was going a wild forty-five miles an hour across the open and as Macomber watched, the
buffalo got bigger and bigger until he could see the gray, hairless look of one huge bull and how
his neck was a part of his shoulders and the shiny black of his horns as he galloped a little behind
the others; and then, the car swaying as though it had jumped a road, they drew up close and he
could see the plunging hugeness of the bull and he was raising his rifle when Wilson shouted ' Not
from the car, you fool!' and he had no fear, only hatred of Wilson while the brakes were pressed
down and the car skidded to an almost stop and Wilson was out on one side and he on the other,
stumbling as his feet hit the still speeding-by of the earth and then he was shooting at the bull as
he moved away, hearing the bullets whunk into him, emptying his rifle at him as he moved
steadily away, finally remembering to get his shots forward into the shoulder and he saw the bull
was down. Down on his knees and seeing the other two still galloping he shot at the leader and
hit him. He shot again and missed and he heard the carawonging roar as Wilson shot and saw the
leading bull slide forward onto his nose.

putea-o mantui, va putea-o hotari sa-l lase pe ticalosul acela de jandarm care se
plimba prin satul pustiu de barbati ca un imparat si-si batea joc de casele oamenilor.
De aceea Marina o lua si cu raul si cu buna. Cerca s-o incredinteze ca, de-si va
vedea de cinstea casei, Andrei nu va sti nimic, dar sa se opreasca din drumul
pierzarii pana nu0i prea tarziu, pana nu va ajunge pe gura satului.

1) Oul deveni tot mai mare si mai uman; cand Alice veni la cativa yarzi de acesta, vazu ca are ochi, nas si
gura; cand se apropie si mai mult , vazu ca e Humpty Dumpty insusi. ‘Nu poate sa fie altcineva’, isi zise.
Humpty Dumpty statea/sedea cu picioarele incrucisate, ca un turc, sus pe un zid inalt, atat de ingust
incat Alice se intreba cum de el poate sa-si mentina echilibrul. ‘ Si cum mai arata exact ca un ou!’, zise
ea cu voce tare si stand cu mainile gata sa-l prinda pentru ca se astepta sa cada. ‘ E foarte provocator sa
fii numit ou’, zise Humpty Dumpty. ‘Ti-am zis ca arati ca un ou’ ii explica Alice cu blandete, ‘Iar unele
oua sint tare frumoase’, adauga ea, sperand sa transforme remarca intr-un fel de compliment. Apoi
incepu sa-si repete incetisor:
Humpty Dumpty sedea sus pe un zid
Humpty Dumpty a cazut rau
Toti caii si oamenii regelui
N-au putut sa-l puna la loc
2) Tomcat Brick doesn’t have friends. Nobody wants to make friends with him/ Nobody wants to be his
friend. Brick does not know why. Probably because of envy. Everybody envies him. He is the masters’ pet
and lives with them in the big house. When it rains or the wind blows, Brick stays near the hot stove. He
lies on soft carpets, eats special food/ fare and , sometimes, when the master wants/ agrees, they drink
beer together. In the house everybody loves him. In the yard nobody can stand him/ likes him. Mr.
Turkey will never be his friend. The dog dreams of how to sink/ of sinking his teeth in the orange fur.
Still, he is envied for no reason. When the little mistress found him he was a wretched/ miserable
kitten thrown under a fence by someone. Frozen, hungry, more dead than alive, he couldn’t even mew. Now
he is actually a member of the family.

1) Cand Dorothy terminase de mancat si era pe cale/ gata/ pe punctul sa se intoarca

la drumul de caramida galbena auzi un geamat profund/ grav prin apropiere.
‘ Ce a fost asta?’ intreba ea timid.
‘ Nu-mi imaginez’, raspunse Sperietoarea de ciori, ‘dar putem merge sa vedem.’
Atunci un alt geamat le ajunse la ureche. Se intoarsera si mersera prin padure
cativa pasi cand Dorothy descoperi ceva stralucind sub o raza de soare. Alerga
pana la acel loc si se opri brusc cu un strigat de surpriza. Un copac mare fusese
taiat/ despicat partial si alaturi, cu un topor in mana, statea un om facut in
intregime din tabla. Capul si bratele si picioarele erau legate prin incheieturi de
trup dar el statea nemiscat. Dorothy il privi uimita si la fel si Sperietoarea, in timp
ce Toto latra brusc/ pe neasteptate si incerca sa muste picioarele de tabla, ceea ce
ii rani dintii/coltii.
‘Ai gemut?’ intreba Dorothy.
‘Da’, raspunse omul de tinichea. ‘Am gemut. Gem de mai bine de un an si nimeni
nu m-a auzit si n-a venit sa ma ajute.’
‘ Ce pot face pentru tine?’ se interesa ea cu blandete.
‘Adu o canistra cu ulei si unge-mi incheieturile’, raspunse el.’Sint atat de ruginite
incat nu le pot misca deloc. Daca ma vei unge, ma voi simti in curand bine din
nou.’
2) Then the bride stood up and told the emperor, her father-in-law: ‘ I cooked the
food/ meal/ fare for the emperor who has got angry and this is why I did it: this
emperor is my father. We were three sisters in our parents’ home. Father asked us

1) Dar mai puternica decat orice era dragostea materna dusa pana la o frenezie
paroxistica de catre apropierea unui pericol inspaimantator. Baiatul ei era destul
de mare sa fi mers alaturi de ea si, in alte conditii, ea doar l-ar fi dus de mana, dar
acum simplul gand de a-l lasa din brate o facea sa se cutremure si il strangea la
piept/ san cu o crispare convulsiva in timp ce inainta.
Pamantul inghetat scartaia sub picioare si ea tremura auzind sunetul; fiecare
frunza care tremura/ se misca, fiecare umbra care fremata/ se agita ii trimitea
sangele inapoi la inima si ii iutea pasii. Se mira de puterea pe care o capatase
pentru ca simtea greutatea baiatului ca pe o pana.
Daca ar fi Harry al tau, mama, sau Willie al tau, care ar urma sa-ti fie luat de catre
un negustor brutal maine dimineata, daca ai fi vazut omul si ai fi auzit ca hartiile
au fost semnate si inaintate/ trimise si ai avea timp numai de la ora 12 pana
dimineata ca sa scapi, cat de repede ai merge? Cate mile ai face in aceste cateva
ore scurte cu copilul drag la piept, cu capusorul somnoros pe umarul tau, cu
bratele micute moi agatate cu incredere de gatul tau?
2) I must admit that my imagination/ fantasy proved endless when it came about
doing something bad. I cooked up/ invented all kinds of opportunities to drive my
father out of his wits/ to make my father lose his temper/self-control and I was
quite delighted with my effectiveness. I could even say that, in some respect,

Nu-i explicasem, nu inca, natura acelei munci, temandu-ma ca ar putea sa o
tulbure. Replica, de fapt, ca sint barbat acum si ca daca vreau sa plec, sa plec.
Stiusem ca asta va fi raspunsul./ reactia. Si totusi ma mahnea sa o parasesc.
Fusese mama din plin si chiar mai mult de atat. Vorbeam ca prietenii, ca de la
barbat la barbat, cum se spune/ ca sa zic asa. Buna ei dispozitie inepuizabila,
cuajul ei, cinstea/onestitatea vehementa/impetuoasa si inteligenta luminoasa/ clara
erau, si inca mai sint, molipsitoare/ contagioase. Ochii ei adanci, mari, negri ,
patrunzatori, ma cercetau, ma priveau de sus pana jos/ ma masurau. ‘ Da, e timpul
sa pleci. Nu e bine pentru un fiu sa zaboveasca prea mult in casa mamei sale. Ai
aripi acum , fiule, puternice, cred. Foloseste-le. Zboara cat mai sus.’ Simteam
mustrari de constiinta/ o strangere de inima, rusine chiar, ca nu-i facusem
confidente/ nu-i spusesem adevarul dar ma temeam ca drumul meu cam
neortodox ar putea-o ingrijora inutil si voiam sa o scutesc de asta. Am hotarat sa-i
trimit literatura si ca ma voi intoarce sa-i explic calea aleasa. Dar mai tarziu. Cand
eu insumi ii voi vedea mai clar directia.
2) Since then there had been almost no day without a quarrel/ fight/ row between
mother-in-law and daughter-in-law. Old Marina, Andrei’s mother, would have liked with
all her heart to stop/ prevent the woman from going on the wrong/ sinful way. She knew

where the men were missing and mocked at people’s marriages. That is why Marina
explained to her/ talked to her both gently and severely/ talked to her using both good and
harsh words. She was trying to convince/ persuade her that, if she took care of/ tresured
the honour of her home, Andrei would not find out anything but she should stop living in
sin until it was too late, until the entire village began to gossip about her.
