Visible Silence
Amazing how so little can say so much.
"Dot dot dot!"
— Stinkoman, Homestar Runner
A character, for whatever reason, doesn't speak. However, it's a matter of
importance to emphasize that they aren't speaking. How do you show it?
Simple: use an ellipsis. This is better known as "...", and is usually used to represent
either where part of a paragraph/sentence was removed or a break in the thought.
Thus, when a character is either mute or choosing not to speak, their dialogue
box/speech bubble/subtitle becomes an ellipsis to show that is the case. Sometimes
appears as an exclamation mark or question mark, which also imply the silence
while carrying a message of their own (and usually with a situation-appropriate
shift in facial expression). Often used for a Beat Panel or when a character has
nothing to say.
Occasionally this shows up for added emphasis in animation as a form of Painting
the Medium.
Compare Dramatic Ellipsis, Melodramatic Pause, and Sweat Drop. A Silent
Protagonist may sometimes speak only in this. Compare also Chirping Crickets, if
the whole cast of characters is too stunned or embarrassed to speak. Turns up in
comics as the word *crickets* in place of a speech bubble.

2. Onomatopoeia
A character will perform an action and say the onomatopoeia for that
action while doing so, or alternately say the onomatopoeia in place of
said action…….

COMPOUND ELEVATED SKULL FRACTURE!
— Team Fortress 2 A Smissmass Story
In comics and shows emulating comics, we'll see words which indicate the
action taking place. "Bash!" and "Kick!", for example, just happen to sound
a bit like the impacts they're describing. They are almost, but not
quite Written Sound Effects. Some authors will just bypass the whole
"sounds like" thing and use words for the action in loud capital letters.
"Glare!" "Leap!" "Flourish!" and even "Idea!"
This is the Unsound Effect. It's a humorous technique, although it is also
seen in fight scenes ("Block!" "Slash!").
This is usually attributed to Richie Rich in the original Harvey
Comics versions, which lasted from the 1950s to the 1980s. They included
such effects as "BOUNCE!" for large rubber balls impacting a hard surface,
and went on to "EXPAND!" when Richie utilized one of Prof.
Keenbean's Applied Phlebotinumdevices meant to go from pocket-size
miniature tool/vehicle/etc. to full-size.
It's worth noting that manga has different but similar conventions regarding
onomatopoeia. Manga has much more than can be done with an Unsound
Effect. Japanese writers will use sound effects to denote sounds, like
heartbeats or door slams, but also to represent more abstract events like
"smiling" ("niko niko"), "sudden realization" ("ha"), "the sound of silence"
("shiiiiiiin"), "the sound of staring" ("jiiiiiiiiii") or even "the sound of blushing"
("kaaaaa"). These are known as phenomimes when they describe external
phenomena and psychomimes when they describe psychological states
(both can be referred to in Japanese asgitaigo, lit. "mimetic words", since
they mimetize such cases). Some anime, generally the more surreal sort,
turn these into actual sound effects, even if said sound effects are just the
character saying the sound effect (like, for example, the character will
actually say "jiiiiiiii" when staring at somebody).
And sometimes, the unsound effect isn't even written. A Super-
Deformed version of the character in the margin, a mascot, an animal, or
other living thing in the background will say or represent the character's
feelings.

You can add a lot of drama to a sound effect by dragging out its top two corner.

- HOLLOW SOUND EFFECTS - have an outline, but the center is see-through, so that
focal art can still be seen. This is most often reserved for instances when space
constraints, or need for impact demand it…. (pg 10 nr 1)

Perspective
Both the application or elimination of speech balloons lines and independent sounds
influence the duration of a panel.
successive panels with dialogue between multiple characters will move quickly as the
byplay creates an action and reaction rhythm.
A silent panel without dialogue or sound effects has the potential to linger in the reader
mind with a sense of timelessness due to its unresolved nature.

The term ‘Line’ is used to discuss the sensory response provoked by the application of
line to establish the underling emotional core of the work. Depending on the artistic
intent the use of line in the artwork can be severe, aggressive, nervousness and
dynamic, or gentle, happy, whimsical, timeless, and unstable. It can also establish the
surrounding scene of cold, hot, loud, quiet, clean or unhygienic. The emotion behind a
line can be influenced by the direction of the line, its shape and by its
character. McCloud (1993, p. 125) states that ‘the most bland expressionless lines on
earth can’t help but characterize their subject in some way’.
Tema de cercetare propusa de doctoranda este bine aleasa, are caracter
multidisciplinar, se incadreaza bine in contextul postmodern, si este putin
discutata la nivel national si mondial, ceea ce sporeste valoarea si necesitatea de
cercetare aprofundata.
doctorat, ceea ce dovedeste interesul si implicarea activa a doctorandei in
programul doctoral de cercetare.
