Together with Grigore Antipa, he was one of the most noted promoters of
natural sciences in Romania. Racoviţă was the first Romanian to have
gone on a scientific research expedition to the Antarctic, more than 100
years ago, as well as an influential professor, scholar and researcher.

Nicolae Paulescu (October 30, 1869 – July 17, 1931) was a Romanian
physiologist, professor of medicine, and the discoverer of insulin (which he
termed pancreatine). The "pancreine" was a crude extract of bovine pancreas
in salted water, after which some impurites were removed with hydrochloric
acid and sodium hydroxide.
