The story of Valentine's Day
* Every year on February 14, lovers around the world celebrate Valentine's Day. But
where does the name of the holiday come from? Who was Valentine? And how did this
become a holiday of love? SAINT VALENTINE'S holiday is linked to a series of legends,
which explain the origin of this day of lovers. There are several versions of the story,
which combined gave birth to a legend: the legend of Saint Valentine.
It is said that Valentine was a priest who married couples in secret, against
the law given by Emperor Claudius that had forbidden marriage. And in this
story he was taken to prison because he refused to convert to believing in
pagan gods. In prison, he befriends the jailer's daughter whom he convinces
to believe in God. On the day of his execution, February 14. 269, Valentin
writes a love letter to the jailer's daughter, which he does not sign.
Another version of the story
associates the name of the
holiday with that of Saint
Valentine of Rome, who was
sent to prison for secretly
officiating marriages for
soldiers who were forbidden
todo so.
While in prison, he
allegedly healed —the
daughter of his warden,
Asterius. Valentin shared his
wisdom and spoke to the girl
about the power of God and
faith. It seems that before
being executed, Valentin
) wrote the gir] one last letter,
asking her to have faith.
Then he put a flower in the letter and signed himself “your Valentine”. When the girl
opened the letter, the flower fell into her palm, and the miracle happened: she could see!WRITTEN BY DIANA RADOL CFIGT GAZETTE
. It is also said that, before his execution, Emperor Claudius II,
meeting Valentin and seeing that he is a learned man, proposed to
release him if he renounced his faith in return. Valentin
categorically refused, and for this he was tortured and beheaded.
Therefore, Saint Valentine is seen as a martyr who sacrificed
himself for the Christian faith. Over the years, lovers have
established the tradition of offering flowers on Valentine's Day on
the date it was executed, on February 14, in the memory of the
priest's gesture, as well as a card signed “from your Valentine”.
The gesture of giving
Valentine's Day greetings
dates back to the medieval era
and there is even a poem
written in 1415 by the Duke
Charles de Orlean to his wife.
At the beginning of the 18th
century, it was common for
friends and lovers to give each
other handwritten cards to
express their affection, and in
the middle of the 19th century,
the first specialized
workshops appeared, the
printed cards being
sometimes decorated with
lace and ribbons.WRITTEN BY STEFANIA GHITA

‘The Legend of Dragobete
Lately everyone celebrates Valentine's Day as the holiday of love, but, Dear Readers, as
you surely know, we have our own holiday of love, called Dragobete! Legends say that
Dragobete, Dochia's son, is the god of love and good mood.
He was also known as Spring Head and Summer Head and was identified with Cupid, the
god of love in Roman mythology and Eros, his counterpart from Greek mythology.
His story begins as a clever, happy hoy, loved by everyone
Legends say that his mother, Dochia, was well known for her beauty: when you met her, you
couldn't get your eyes of her golden hair, her white skin and red lips.
When she was young, she lived in a shack at the bottom of a mountain, where, one day, a soft
cloud descended to earth and hugged her with passion.
This is how Dragobete made his appearance in the world, on the 24th of February.
w——_O—>
Athis birth, four fairies gathered around -
Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter.
Each one brought him the most beautiful gift in
the world. Spring gave him love, the freshness
of flower and youth without old age. Summer
gave him the sweetness of fruits and the
accomplishing love.
Autumm gave him a flute to keep him company
and to bring joy to others with his songs. And
Winter sewed him a white dress like snow.
Years passed and Dragobete began to be loved
by everyone, especially because he was always
happy and his songs were so beautiful that
every girl was charmed by them.
Even more, on the night of the 23rd of
February, as legend says, Dragobete appears in
the dreams of every boy and teaches them the
secrets of love, so on the 24th of February, more
and more couples are formed and live happily
ever after.
The Americans have established the Love
Holiday on the 14th of February, but Romanians
prefer the 24th of February as Dragobete's Day
rather than Valentine's Day.WRITTEN BY ALEXANDRU STOICA AND ALEXANDRA ENACHE, CEIGT GAZETTE

feelings are not shy to appear. London, the extroverted boy who plays girls on his

Valentine’s Day traditions around the world
Just as everybody knows February 14th is Valentine’s Day which means
roses, pink or red teddy bears, heart shaped chocolate boxes. But does it
mean the same thing to people in other countries? Some cultures have
Valentine’s Day traditions that predate hearts and flowers. Other cultures
have imported the celebration of Valentine’s Day and put their own footprint
on it. Let’ see how other people around the world celebrate Valentine’s Day.
In South Korea 14th February is boy and men’s day because on this day
girls spoil their Boyfriends and Husbands with sweets and flowers. I know
you may think that this is not fair but I can tell you that their turn comes too,
because 14th March is “White Day” when women are spoiled with flowers,
sweets and gifts.
+ InJapan February 14th is also a day to spoil men. However, it’s not just
your lover you're expected to spoil. Chocolate is given to male friends, co-
workers and bosses, as well. Different types of chocolate are expected for
different relationships: “giri choco” or “obligatory chocolate” is for
platonic relationships and love interests get “honmei choco” along with a
handmade gift. Just as South Korea, women receive the same treatment
on March 14.
. In Estonia Valentine’s Day it’s called Sobrapaev, which means
“Friendship Day.” Instead of a day for lovers, it’s a day to celebrate any
kind of friendships.
. In Ghana, February 14th is National Chocolate Day. Tastings, dinners
and other events are held around the country to promote Ghana's top
agricultural export- the cocoa bean.
+ France has long been called “The Country of Love” regardless of what
day it is. But when February 14th comes around, lovers give each other
gifts and trade love letters.
+ Romanians also celebrate Valentine’s Day, but the real love holiday in
Romania is Dragobete which is on February 24th. In some parts of
Romania people believe that stepping over your lover's foot leads to the
dominant role in the relationship.CROSSWORD BY SEBY AND RAZVAN CEIGT GAZETTE

WHO WAS DRAGOBETE?
Did you know that on February 24th we celebrate Dragobete and
that it is said that girls and boys meet this day so that their love
lasts all year? But who was this Dragobete?
Legend has it that Dragobete was the son of Dochia, a
particularly beautiful girl. At birth he had four fairies: Spring,
who gave him love, freshness of flowers and ageless youth,
Summer, who gave him the sweetness of fruit and the warmth of
love, Autumn, who gave him a whistle to cheer the people with
his songs and Winter that gave him a white coat with diamond
sparkles. Having become a boy, these gifts helped the young man
to seduce all the young women who came his way, which is why
he, Dragobete, became the god of love and good mood, being
identified with Cupid, the god of love in Roman mythology or

Eros in Greek
mythology. The
legend says that
Dragobete did not die,
but was transformed
into a plant, which on
the night of February
23 to 24 begins to rise.

WHY DO WE REALLY CELEBRATE
VALENTINE’ S DAY?
Whether you love Valentine's Day or hate it, one thing's clear: Valentine's Day history
goes way back. And while Valentine's Day is now known for kissing, gifts, and hard-to-
get dinner reservations, the origins of the holiday are far less romantic, even so, the
majority of the teenagers don’t fully understand what this holiday is really supposed to
mean or why we celebrate it in the first place.
Valentine's Day did not come to be celebrated as a day of romance until about the 14th
century, in fact until then the celebrations of this day were in a violent way.
Itall started from February 13 to
15 when the Romans were
celebrating the feast of
Lupercalia, the men sacrificed a
goat and a dog, then whipped
women with the hides of the
animals they had just slain, after
this a series of pagan rituals were
about to be done.
Later, Pope Gelasius muddled
things in the fifth century by
combining St. Valentine's Day
with Lupercalia to expel the
pagan rituals. But the festival was
more of a theatrical interpretation
of what it had once been.
Today, the celebration of this
holiday is mostly done with
chocolate, flowers and many
other gifts, but this marketing and
commerce can ruin very easily
the true love that should be
exposed trough this occasion,
maybe with letters or declarations
of true love.WRITTEN BY DINU NEGOITA, 10 F CEIGT GAZETTE
