THE FOUNDATION OF
HOLLYWOOD

Hollywood was founded in

1857. The accounts that the
name would come from the
holy shrubs brought from
England are largely untrue. It
is said that the name of
Hollywood appeared by
chance when Harvey
Henderson Wilcox's wife, a
real estate agent in the
1880s, traveling by train, met
a woman who called her
Hollywood. When Mrs.
Wilcox returned home, she
baptized her farm as well

The word "Hollywood" is
used colloquially with the
meaning of the film and
television industry in
Southern California, the term
deriving from the famous
community.

Faimosul însemn al
Hollywoodului a fost ridicat în
anul 1923 și era menit să
promoveze noile dezvoltări
imobiliare pe dealurile
Hollywoodului, înfățișând
inițial cuvântul
"Hollywoodland". Pentru mulți
ani semnul a fost lăsat să se
deterioreze. În 1949, Camera
de Comerț a Hollywoodului a
pus piciorul în prag și s-a
oferit să elimine ultimele patru
litere și să le repare pe
celălalte. Semnul, amplasat în
Parcul Griffith, a fost
înregistrat ca marcă și nu mai
poate fi folosit fără
permisiunea Camerei de
Comerț a Hollywoordului, care
administrează și venerabilul
Walk of Fame.
