The article describes consecutively the process of study of the most famous
archaeological monuments of Middle Ages Moldavia - Old Orhei. It has drawn
researchers' attention for a long time. In an early stage of the investigations during the
XVIIl'^-XIX* centuries, attention was essentially focused on the question of the
location of this monument on the map of Moldavia, but the location was only defined
in 1946 by Gh. Smimov, who placed it, not without grounds, on the right bank of the
river Ram, between the villages of Trebujeni and Butuceni. Since then the
archaeological studying has been carried on with some recesses up to the present and
the main results are revealed in the works cited in the article.

I'ancien palais episcopal etait devenu une residence princiere tandis que I'ancieime

The privileges granted to urban localities may be extremely variate, touching at every
aspect of urban life, ranging from the economic, political, juridical, military to the
ecclesiastic fields. These rights and exemptions have stimulated the development of
towns and thus have contributed to their welfare. The more extended the privileges, the
ampler the opportunities to promote cultiu-e. Our approach attempts at formulating, and,
at best, at answering a series of questions related to the ecclesiastic privileges of urban
localities. Consequently, as a result of our research we may conclude that: 1. on the
urban communities of the seven Transylvanian counties the institution of patronage did
not exist; 2. what Transylvanian localities could gain at best was under-patronage, but
only Transylvanian Saxon settlements managed to gain such rights. Under-patronage
consisted in the right to freely elect the plebanus, the free tithe, the parish's exemption
from the jurisdiction of the metropolitan and bishop. Among the aforementioned rights,
the urban localities of the seven Transylvanian counties enjoyed only therightto freely
elect the plebanus. Ecclesiastic privileges granted to Transylvanian urban localities did
not rise to the level of those granted to the Transylvanian Saxon deaneries or to
parishes located in other areas of medieval Hungary. Nevertheless, the free election of
the priest and plebanus in certain parishes reveals a certain degree offreedomenjoyed
by the respective community, manifested not only in the right to recommend their own
candidate for confirmation to the ecclesiastic authorities, but also in the authorization to
administrate the revenues of their own parish. As urban localities in the seven
Transylvanian counties were not granted therightto patronage certain developments in
the field of culture were not due to ecclesiastic privileges, but to other significant
factors, such as political or economic evolutions.

d'invasions, sauf quelques agglomerations urbaines (Orheiul Vechi, Coste§ti, Cetatea
la§i).

I'hiver en boue.

innerhalb seines Universalstaates (kosmopolis).
empfohlen hatte, was ihn wiederum als modem ausweist.
This article is an excerpt (remodeled, of course) from the "Adriatic Sea (Istria and
Dalmatia CD-Rom) launched by the "Paideia" publishing house at the International
Book Fair "Bookarest 2000". The article presents the brief but extremely dynamic and
complex history of the relationship between the eastern coast territory of the Adriatic
Sea and its towns, focusing mainly on the mediaeval period, when the zone was
influenced by various cultures: Byzantine, Hungarian, Croatian, Serbian, Slovene,
Austrian and Venetian, which decisively impressed the urban structure and
morphology. The paper also focuses on the relations (more numerous and temporarily
stronger than what is normally believed) between the respective towns and the
Romanian territory. The general history of the Adriatic coast territory urbanism is
followed by brief presentations of several towns as "case studies", covering the whole
territory, all types of urban history as well as the typologies encountered there. Some of
them bear marks of ancient Roman civilization (Porec-Parenzo, Zadar-Zara, Trogir-Trau,
Split-Spalato) such as street patterning and construction elements maintained. Others are
the result of the Middle Ages massive disruption of urban population due to the migratory
peoples (Koper-Cappo d'Istria, Rovinj-Rovigno, Senj-Segna, Dubrovnik-Ragusa).
