Preotul G h e o r g h e G r . Popescu a fost bătut de U n g u r i în
l u n a A p r i l i e 1917, l e g a t d e m â i n i şi d e p i c i o a r e c u f i a r e şi f i n u l
într'o pivniţă, p e motiv c ă ar fi c o n t r a dinastiei ungureşti. Din
c a u z a m a l t r a t ă r i l o r , a î n c e t a t d i n v i a t ă la d a t a d e 8 Noembrie
1917.

I n a n u l 1854, în z o d i e d e r ă z b o i u şi v ă r s a r e d e s â n g e , c â n d în r ă ­
s ă r i t î n c e p u s e r ă z b o i u l C r i m e e i şi t o t î n t r ' o v r e m e d e a m a r n i c e î n ­
c e r c ă r i şi d i n c a u z a l o r i- a f o s t d a t să d o a r m ă s o m n d e t i h n i t ă
o d i h n ă , cu n ă d e j d e a mântuirii poporului pe care l-a păstorit
p â n ă în N o e m b r i e 1918.
Pentru v r e m e a lui a f o s t d e s t u l d e î n v ă ţ a t . P o p a S a n d u ş i - a
început pregătirea preoţească c â n d se i v i a u z o r i i deşteptării
n o a s t r e c u l t u r a l e , c â n d s p i r i t e l e se f r ă m â n t a u s p r e m a i m u l t ă l u ­
m i n a r e şi r i d i c a r e a p o p o r u l u i . C e l e 4 c l a s e d e s e m i n a r d e l a B u ­
z ă u î n t r e 1868-1872 î n s e m n a u m u l t p e n t r u un c o p i l d e s a t , o n ă ­
zuinţă frumoasă destul d e împlinită.
A v e n i t î)i sat la B N i e ş t i V u t n a , c ă s ă t o r i n d u - s e c u S m a r a n d a ,
f a t a lui p o p a C h i r i t ă d e a c o l o , u n d e a şi fots h i r o t o n i t , s l u j i n d
c a p r e o t a j u t ă t o r a l s o c r u l u i s ă u p â n ă în 1910, c â n d a t r e c u t l a
p a r o h i a „ D u m b r ă v i f a " C o m . S u r a i a . A i c i şi-a î m p l i n i t d u p ă cu­
v i i n ţ ă d a t o r i a s e r v i n d lui D u m n e z e u şi o a m e n i l o r p â n ă în 1917
c â n d v e n i n d m a r e c u m p ă n ă p e s t e f ă r ă , s'a s t a b i l i t f r o n t u l Ş i r e t u l u i
în părţile acestea. Cum comuna S u r a i a este s i t u a t ă p e malul
d r e p t al a p e i Şiretului, tofi locuitorii a u fost e v a c u a ţ i .
P o p a S a n d u s'a d u s la R ă s t o a c a , sat l a 8 k m . d e l i n i a f r o n ­
t u l u i la o f i i c ă a s a . A c i a slujit c a p r e o t , î n t r u c â t p a r o h u l din
R ă s t o a c a e r a r e f u g i a t în M o l d o v a .
T o a t e a u mers c u m a u m e r s , î n s ă p r i n l u n a F e b r u a r i e 1917
s ' a î n t â m p l a t în R ă s t o a c a un f a p t n e o b i ş n u i t , c a r e a a d u s m u l t ă
n e n o r o c i r e p e c a p u l p r e o t u l u i S a n d u şi a l p ă s t o r i ţ i l o r s ă i .
Se s t a b i l i s e în sat o c o m p a n i e d e u l a n i b a v a r e z i , c a rezer­
v ă a î n t r e g u l u i r e g i m e n t c e se a f l a p e f r o n t . In a c e a s t ă c o m p a n i e
e r a un s o l d a t c u a p u c ă t u r i r e l e , b e ţ i v , a f e m e i a t şi h o f n u m i t H e i n -
rich N u s s e l , c a r e u m b l a t o t t i m p u l p r i n c a s e l e o a m e n i l o r după
împlinirea păcătoşeniilor sale.
I n t r ' o b u n ă z i , a c e s t s o l d a t nu s'a m a i î n t o r s l a c o m p a n i e .
După ce — d i n ordinul căpitanului — l-au c ă u t a t pretutindeni,
a fost d a t c a „dispărut".
Peste v r e - o 12 z i l e , c â n d t o a t ă l u m e a u i t a s e d e e l , n e m ţ i i a u
î n c e p u t să s c o a t ă g h i a f ă d i n M i l c o v c u l u c r ă t o r i r o m â n i , să f a c ă
g h e ţ ă r i i c h i a r în R ă s t o a c a şi la un g h i o l a u a f l a t s u b c o p c ă t r u ­
p u l u l a n u l u i d i s p ă r u t , c u l o v i t u r i a d â n c i d e t o p o r în f r u n t e . L-au
r i d i c a t şi l-au a d u s î n t r ' o c a s ă î n s a t .

 Pela m i e z u l n o p f i i — c a o p r i m a m ă s u r a î n a i n t e d e î n c e p e ­
rea cercetărilor — nemţii a u arestat p e p r e o t u l Ştefan Andro-
n e s c u , p e C o n s t a n t i n P o p a , g i n e r e l e , p ă r i n t e l u i şi p r i m a r a l c o ­
munei, pe secretarul Ion M a x i m şi Z a m f i r A n g h e l u f ă delegat,
ducându-i la c o m e n d u i r e , u n d e se a f l a u c o m a n d a n t u l compa­
niei şi u n a l t o f i f e r trimis în c e r c e t a r e d e c o l o n e l u l r e g i m e n t u l u i .
T o a t ă n o a p t e a i-au b ă t u t , a m e n i n f â n d u - i c u e x e c u t a r e a d a c ă nu
v o r a f l a p e u c i g a ş . A d o u a z i i-au î n c h i s î n t r ' o c a s ă părăsită,
păzită d e s e n t i n e l e c u t o a t ă s t r ă ş n i c i a , să nuţ p o a t ă v o r b i cu
nimeni.
T o t a t u n c i , n e m f i i a u scos p e t o f i l o c u i t o r i i d i n p a r t e a sa­
t u l u i u n d e fusese g ă s i t s o l d a t u l , c u f e m e i şf c o p i i , d e s b r ă c a f i şi
d e s c u l ţ i p e un g e r c u m p l i t , î n t r e b â n d p e f i e c a r e d e ştiu ceva
de omor. Lacrămi, jale, jurăminte, ameninţări, înjurături I Ni­
m e n i nu ştia nimic. Furia n e m ţ i l o r e r a d e n e d e s c r i s . La un m o ­
m e n t d a t t â l m a c i u l a l u a t în b r a f e p e f e t î f a l o r d a n a Dană de
7 ani, întrebând-o :
— „ F e t i f o , t u nu ştii nimic d e un s o l d a t n e a m ţ 9

„ B a d a , — a r ă s p u n s c o p i l a — a v e n i t un n e a m ţ î n t r ' o s e a r ă
ia n o i şi a v o r b i t cu m a m a şi c u d a d a şi a p o i a i n t r a t şi n e n e a
N i c o l a i d e s ' a l u a t l a c e a r t ă c u s o l d a t u l . In u r m ă a u eşit a f a r ă
c e r t â n d u - s e şi c e - o m a i fi f ă c u t , nu ştiu I " . „ N e n e a Neculai" a
fost identificat în p e r s o a n a locuitorului Neculc: I. N e a c ş u din
s a t u l L ă m o t e ş t i , c a r e l u c r a în c o m p a n i a d e l u c r ă t o r i r o m â n i la
g h e ţ ă r i e în Răstoaca.
N e m f i i a u a ş e z a t p e l u c r ă t o r i în 2 r â n d u r i f ă r ă N i c o l a i , p u ­
n â n d p e f a t ă să-Ii a r a t e . F a t a a s p u s — d u p ă c e s'a u i t a t la
tofi — că nu este acolo. Când l-au a d u s şi p e Nicolai, l-a
recunoscut.
I m e d i a t a fost p u s în f i a r e şi t r i m i s l a î n c h i s o a r e a d i n F o c ş a n i ,
supus unui regim d e c a r c e r ă g r e a , chinuit, bătut, întrebat zi d e
z i să s p u n ă c u m a s ă v â r ş i t f a p t a . A s e m e n i şi f e m e i l e P a r a s c h i v a
O n c i o i u , Vasilica Dană şi F l o a r e a Negoifă c a r i l o c u i a u în a-
c e e a ş c a s ă , d u s e t o t la F o c ş a n i la î n c h i s o a r e , i s p ă ş i n d în bătăi
şi c h i n u r i , c i n e ş t i e c e a l t e p ă c a t e v o r fi s ă v â r ş i t .
O n ă p a s t ă c u m p l i t ă c ă z u s e a s u p r a lui N e a c ş u . Era însă o m
c r e d i n c i o s şi n u m a i c u n ă d e j d e a în D u m n e z e u a p u t u t îndura
c h i n u r i l e d e m u c e n i c la c a r e a f o s t s u p u s . D e a l t f e l nici f e m e i l e
n'au spus riimic, f i i n d c ă d e f a p t n u ş t i a u nimic I Nenorocirea

 c u r ă ţ ă sufletul păcătosului. Să d e a vina degeaba p e un o m
poate nevinovat I A u îndurat toate, cu aceeaş răbdare caşi
Neacşu.

z i u a d e 2 9 I a n u a r i e , este i n v i t a t d e a c o m u n i c a .
5 0 0 lai r e c o m p e n s ă p r i m e ş t e a c e l a c a r e v a f a c e o a s e m e ­
nea c o m u n i c a r e , în u r m a căreia făptuitorul să p o a t ă fi g ă s i t
şi t r a s la r ă s p u n d e r e .

V ă z â n d c ă n u isbutesc c u nimic î n c e r c e t ă r i l e l o r , a u scos
p e p o p a Sandu din arest — fiindcă în t o t timpul cercetărilor a
«tat î n c h i s î m p r e u n ă c u c e i l a l ţ i în c a s a p ă r ă s i t ă — d u p ă cum a m
a r ă t a t şi a d u c â n d u - l l a C o m e n d u i r e i - a u spus :
— „ S ă ştii, p ă r i n t e , c ă N e a c ş u este v i n o v a t şi c o n d a m n a t
la m o a r t e prin împuşcare. Domnul c o l o n e l a a v u t însă bunâ-
v o n i f a s ă - i î n g ă d u i a s c ă a se s p o v e d i şi î m p ă r t ă ş i î n a i n t e d e e x e ­
cuţie d u p ă r i t u a l u l o r t o d o x , c u c o n d i ţ i a c a Sf. T a s ă n e s p u i
t o t c e e a c e îfi v a d e s t ă i n u i c o n d a m n a t u l la s p o v e d a n i e !".
In m i n t e a bătrânului popa Sandu din Răstoaca a apărut
d e o d a t ă c a o n e b ă n u i t ă î n t ă r i r e şi m â n g â i e r e — c ă ştia doar
c e - l a ş t e a p t ă — c h i p u l c r u c i i M â n t u i t o r u l u i şi v e d e n i a calvarului
cu nesfârşitul lanî a l pătimirilor.
Se'ntoarse hotărît spre căpitan :

D i n a c e a s t ă c a u z ă p o p a S a n d u a fost c o n s i d e r a t c o m p l i c e
al criminalului, fiind ţinut arestat p â n ă a p r o a p e d e evacuarea
c o m u n e i , la Risipiţi.
N i c i N e a c ş u însă n ' a fost e x e c u t a t . A r ă m a s în î n c h i s o a r e
ia Focşani, î m p r e u n ă cu cele 3 femei, ispăşind a m a r n i c o crimă
închipuită, p â n ă la venirea Românilor, c â n d a u d o b â n d i t liber­
tatea.
In u r m ă , s'a a f l a t şi a d e v ă r u l . S o l d a t u l n e a m f a i n t r a t î n ­
t r ' o s e a r ă în c a s a l o c u i t o r u l u i N e c u l a i C h i f u , n ă p u s t i n d u - s e a s u ­
p r a f e m e i i şi f e t e i a c e s t u i a . In a c e s t t i m p a v e n i t p e n e a ş t e p t a t e
Gheorghe, feciorul lui N e c u l a i Chifu, care văzând ceeac©
v o i a n e a m ţ u l să f a c ă , a p u s m â n a p e t o p o r şi c u m n e a m ţ u l e r a
şi b e a t , l-a t r â n t i t l a p ă m â n t , d â n d u - i c â t e v a l o v i t u r i în f r u n t e ,
c u m t a i un l e m n p e un b u ş t e a n , o m o r â n d u - l p e l o c .
N u m a i d u p ă c e l-a o m o r î t şi-a d a t s e a m a d e g r o z ă v i a şi
urmările faptei săvârşite. A a l e r g a t î n t r ' u n suflet l a v ă r u l său

rul T o a d e r , î n t r e b â n d u - l de alte lucruri, c e r c e t â n d u - l însă cu
privirea, — c u m i n t e a a b s e n t ă l a r ă s p u n s u r i l e şi v o r b e l e lui
d a c ă nu c u m v a a r e d e g â n d să nu-şi f i e l e g ă m â n t u l . . . S'ar p u -
lea oare ? Doar aceeaş pedeapsă ne aşteaptă pe amândoi.

C u suflet d e p ă m â n t , c u s â n g e l e î n g h e ţ a t î n v i n e , g a t a s<S
s t r i g e în g u r a m a r e în f a t a t u t u r o r c ă n u e l este v i n o v a t u l , v o i a

dela început, dela identificarea lui „ n e n e a Neculai" până la
urmă, la t o a t e suferinţele celor nevinovaţi pentru o m o r u l săvâr­
şit d e e l .
A c e s t e a - I i s t o v e a u . Erau p e s t e p u t e r i l e l u i . Şi a s t f e l , z i d e z i ,
s'a t o p i t f l ă c ă u l G h e o r g h e C h i j u î n t r ' o c u m p l i t ă l u p t ă d e c o n ­
ştiinţă, p â n ă c â n d într'o înserare a c h e m a t p e p r e o t d e şi-a uşu­
r a t sufletul p r i n c ă i n ţ a s p o v e d a n i e i şi i e r t a r e a d e s u b p a t r a h i r ,
î n v r e d n i c i n d u - s e d e a l i n a r e şi s o m n d e v e ş n i c i e .
Rând p e r â n d a u pornit în lumea d e d i n c o l o , nevinovatul.
N e a c ş u la câtva timp d u p ă e l i b e r a r e , flăcăul G h e o r g h e Chifu
c a r e îşi a p ă r a s e cinstea mamei şi s u r o r i i , i a r în u r m a lor î n
N o e m b r i e 1918, p o p a S a n d u d i n R ă s t o a c a , c e l c e ş i - a p u s v i a t a
în c u m p ă n ă şi a suferit a t â t e a , p e n t r u a p ă r a r e a sfintei s a l e d u ­
hovnicii.
O a m e n i i l-au î n g r o p a t l â n g ă a l t a r în d r e a p t a bisericii d i n
R ă s t o a c a , i a r f e m e i l e în t r e c e r e a l o r s p r e c i m i t i r , se a b a t o c l i p ă
t ă m â i n d u - i m o r m â n t u l c a u n u i p r e o t şi a d e v ă r a t d u h o v n i c ce
s'a a r ă t a t , s u f e r i n d î m p r e u n ă c u s ă t e n i i în v r e m e a d e g r e a î n ­
cercare prin care a u trecut.

„ I n luna D e c e m b r i e 1916, a d o u a zi d u p ă o c u p a r e a satu­
lui d e t r u p e l e i n a m i c e , s ' a u p r e z e n t a t l a p r e o t u l I o n D a n f i ş - -
p e a t u n c i în e t a t e d e 6 4 a n i — 2 o f i ţ e r i u n g u r i , c e r â n d s ă f i e
g ă z d u i ţ i . P r e o t u l n e a v â n d î n c o t r o , i-a p r i m i t , î n s ă s e a r a târziu
s ' a p o m e n i t c u î n c ă a l t i 3 o f i f e r i t o t u n g u r i şi d u p ă c e a u l u a t
m a s a , a u î n c e p u t să c e a r ă p r e o t u ' u i b a n i d e cur, c ă c i preotul
e r a b o g a t . A răspuns c ă nu a r e - n i c i un b a n d e aur. Tofi s ' a u
n ă p u s t i t a s u p r a lui c u s ă b i i l e şi r e v o ' v e r e l e . T o a t ă n o a p t e a l - a u
b ă t u t şi l - a u s c h i n g i u i t , i - a u r ă v ă ş i t t o t p r i n c a s ă , p r ă d â n d u - l d e
mulţi b a n i , în m a j o r i t a t e b a n i d e a r g i n t , după care apoi a u
dispărut.
