OUTSIDE- CLASS ENGLISH SPEAKING
IN A TECHNOLOGICAL MODERNIZED WORLD
Prof. RAICA LUCIANA
Colegiul Naional Mihai Eminescu Petroani, HD
Teaching a student to speak English can also be done outside the class, easily, but
only if the learner can cope on his/ her own in the real world. Here are only two examples of
many others:
1) Students/ Learners are of two groups: the ones who use technological devices such as
smart phones and tablets and the second group who have very limited access to technology.
With any of the two groups, learners must be motivated to speak English outside the classroom.
When it comes to the learners with access to technology, they must be encouraged to
make the best of using the internet, where there are thousands of applications such as vocabulary
games, audio and video programmes with which they can considerably improve their speaking
skills by listening and viewing these repeatedly. They can also easily use Skype or any other
interactive programme, getting live conversations with native speakers and so they develop self-
confidence to speak effortlessly.
As for the learners who have very limited
access to technology, they should also be motivated to
achieve success, simply by dramatizing short stories into
plays with students acting designated roles. The teacher
can introduce them books with short stories and many
conversations of different situations. Al this can be
recorded and afterwards viewed by students and so
students may easily correct their mistakes. In order to
improve speaking skills is to read as many short stories
as possible and listen to tapes or recordings of any type repeatedly. This method is very efficient
in improving the speaking skill.
2) Tape Diaries. Learners keep a taped diary by recording themselves regularly at home on
audiotape and submitting this to the teacher for feedback. This is how Scott Thornbury puts it in
his book How to Teach Speaking. His opinion is that this method is very good especially for
the learners who are shy about speaking in class. Then, having access to voice mail, these

recordings can be digitally exchanged as mail attachments. All learners need is a microphone and
an email programme that supports voice mail. The result is proven shortly: the teacher can send
written comments in the accompanying email, plus the necessary feedback.
All in all, such usage of taped dialogues, computer-based communication, drama
activities, including role-plays and simulations are in favour of providing English learners the
best ways to develop their speaking skills outside the classroom in a technological modernized
world, providing learners plenty of autonomy and self-confidence.
