Ion Luca Caragiale was born on February 13, 1852, in Haimanale, Romania, and died
on June 9, 1912, in Berlin, Germany. He was a playwright, novelist, pamphlet, poet, writer,
theater director, political commentator and Romanian journalist, being also one of the 4
classics of Romanian literature. He was also elected a member of the post-mortem Romanian
Academy.
The literary debut made him at the age of 21, starting to collaborate with the humor
magazine "Clapon" and "Clapon Calendar". At "Ghimpele" and "Clapon", I.L.Caragiale
prepared for his future play as a playwright and writer, a satirical writer. Caragiale enters the
literary circle of "Junimia", thanks to a translation of the French play "Rome defeated by
Parodi".
Năpasta is the only written drama and the last drama play of the playwright Ion Luca
Caragiale, which appeared in 1890. It consists of 2 acts and has a total of 17 scenes.
According to I. D. Suchianu, Caragiale and some friends were on a trip in the Olt
valley when they stopped in the village of Tigveni, on the bank of the Topolog. In the pub,
they marveled at the beauty of a village. At the exit, they met a group of young people who
noticed that "this girl is going to die as a human being," so this opera was born.
