The pediatric sepsis remains a common cause of morbidity and one of the leading causes
of mortality among children worldwide, regardless of some underlying healthcare issues.
Recognizing sepsis and septic shock is critical, as well as an optimal, time-sensitive treatment.
Sepsis is a common clinical syndrome that complicates severe infection and is characterized by
immune dysregulation, systemic inflammatory response, microcirculatory derangements and
cardiovascular organ dysfunction. There is still debate about how to define pediatric sepsis given
varying ranges of “normal” vital signs for ages and the application on different groups of
patients, especially after cardiac surgery with cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB). In our clinic, in
last 2 years there were operated 432 children, of these 33 (7.6%) developed sepsis, all operated
under CPB conditions. Further studies are needed to identify the risc factors associated with the
development of sepsis and further development of its management strategy.
