Safety Instructions Read and folow all ofthe safety wamings on page 2 of this manual and on the separate safety precautions page enclosed with the unit. Do not ‘expose the PS1600 or PS1300 to water or othor liquids. Always unplug the unit if water is present. Failure to do so can result in injury or death from electric shock. 2. Grounding If your power amplifier is supplied with a three- ‘conductor, grounded power cord and plug, connect the unitonly to aproperty grounded mains outlet. 00 ‘not use a ground lft adapter or otherwise attempt io defeat the ground on the plug. Failure to properly ‘round the unitcan resultin damage to the amplifier or other equipment connected to it and represents ‘a dangerous shock hazard. 3, Line Voltage ‘Operate from AC mains not more than 5% above or blow the specified lino voltage. Failure to comply may invalidate your warranty. 4, Pre-Connection Caution ‘Aways switch off the power and set al the level controlstominimum before making any connections. This will eliminate any chance of unexpected, loud audio transients that could damage your speaker systems. C. STEREO OPERATION his basicmethod of operation is recommended for 4 Ohm applications for maximum power output. Each channel provides a separate and discrete signalatthe speaker outputs according othe signal received at the inputs. There are two channels for stereo operation. Follow these steps to use either ‘modo! of amplifier inthis manner: 1. Mono/Bridge LED With the power off, set the sterea/mono bridge switch on the rear panel othe stereo position. Do ‘notmake any connections yet. Switch the poweron. When the poweris on, the bridge meno LED on tho front panel wil not ight. the LED illuminates, you have the switch inthe wrong position. Change the switch before continuing. Switch the power of 2. Input Cables ‘With he power off, connectyourinputsourcecables to the inputs for channels A and 8. 3. Speaker Output Connections Connect speaker systems to speaker outputs as shown in Fig. 3, page 7. For best performance and highest power output, the total speaker load for each channelmustbe atleast4 Ohms. The amplifier wil operato at load conditions lower than 4 Ohms per channel, butpower output and performance will be lower in order to keep the amplifier from over heating. If the load is too low, the amplifier may go int its protect mode and stop operating unt the load is increased to 4 Ohms. 4. Power up sequence Recheckall your connections wit all level controls Set to, Switch the power on. 5, Set Input Level Controls ‘Apply anominal signalto the inputs. The level he input signa tothe ampliier shouldbe set about as high as youwilleverneedittobe. The unbalanced ineuses anormaltip/sleeve connection. Thetipispositive andthe sleeves negative/ground. See Fig. 5.8 3. Speaker Outputs ‘Speaker connections are dual banana (MDP)bare witebinding posts that willaccept standard single or dual banana plugs or bare wire. Either method provides a safe and reliable connection capable of {ransferringhigh power signalsifproperty connected. To avoid ANY possible shock hazare, the power amplifier shouldbe disconnectedtromthe ACpower source before making any connections. When connecting your speakers using ether method, be sute to pay close attention to proper polarity. The red speaker connector is postive (x). Although ‘connecting your speaker systems out of phase using the wrong polarity will not damage your speakers, it will affect the quality of sound. When using bare wire connections, be sure that your ‘connections are "clean". f any strands of wire from ‘one connector are allowed to touch the adjacent connector, damage to your amplifier and sound system could occur. F. POWER REQUIREMENTS: ‘Your SoundTech PS1600 or PS1900 is available in 110-120 VAC or 220-240 VAC versions. Clip LED A clip LED for each channel indicates that your signal levelis so strong that there is distortion atthe ‘output ofthat channel. While itis normal forthe cp LED to flash during programpeaks, the LED should ‘ot remain constantly litduring operation. fitdoes, ‘most likely you will hear the results in the form of distorted soundithat canbe damagingto yourspeaker systems. in this case, reduce the signal level by lowering the input lovel control forthe channel that 's clipping or reduce the level at the source. Note that when using the amplifier in the bridge mode, both clip LED's of the bridged channels will operate simultanously. 2, Mono/Bridge LED ‘The mono forge LED wil light when you have set the rear panel switch tothe mono/boridge postion for bridged operation. Alvaysmakesure that hisswitch is in the correct position and that all speaker connectionshavebeen made correctly forthe made of operation you wish to use before powering up the amplifier. 3. Temp LED “The temp LED indicates that the internal operating temperature of the power amplifier is exceeding normal limits. Your PS1600 or PS1300 protects itself from thermal overload in stops. When the internal temperature reaches a certain level, the cooling fans will begin to operate. The fan speed Increases asthe tomperature increases. tis normal forthe fans to be on. Ifthe temperature continues to ‘approach an unsafe level, the temperature LED will light to warn you of the situation. Finally it the temperature exceeds an unsafe level, the ampitier willstop operating. The protect LED willight atthat time, as well. When the amplifier has cooled to a safe temperature, it will automatically restart itself and both the temperature and protect LED's will be ott 4. Protect LED The protect LED indicates that there is a problem eitherin the ampliier’s external connections, load or temperature conditions or its intemal functions. if ‘one of these situations occurs, the amplifier senses the problem and automatically witches into its "protect mode”. The LED willight to war you of the trouble and the ampliier will stop working. It the LED lights and stays on, switch off he amplifier and refer tothe Trouble Shooting Guide at the endo this ‘manual. It you feel that you have been able to correct the fault condition that caused the amplifior togointo the protectmode, restart the amplifier. The ampitier will go through its sel-test routine. Allow 8 - 12 seconds for the amplifier to be ready for ‘operation. if you have successfully removed the fault condition, the amplifier wll run normally. Ifthe protect LED remains lit when attempting to resume ‘ampitier operation, do not use the ample. Refer the amplifier to an authorized SoundTech service facility or contact your dealer for help. 5. Power LED ‘The power LED indicates that the power switch isin the on position. The Power Source ampitiers from ‘SoundTech feature a sol-test, slow start sequence: that checks the amplifier for fault conditions before allowing the audio signal to be passed. This ‘sequence takes 8 - 12 seconds to complete. During thattime, even though the power LED ist, no signal willbe heard until the sequence is completed. Ifthe amplifier senses a fault condition during the startup ‘sequence, it will pu itself into the protect mode and. the protect LED willight as described above. When fa temperature or protect condition has been ‘corrected and the amplifier restarts itsotf, it will automatically go through the startup sequence again to be sure everything is truly ready for operation. V Care and Maintenance Your SoundTech Power Source amplifier model PS1600 or PS1300 is built to provide years of service under demanding circumstances. Itrequires ‘ho intemal maintenance but a common sense ‘approach to its use will help you enjoy long and reliable operation. Here are some tips: 1.Cleaning Keep the amplifier clean by wiping with a damp cloth. Use a mild detergent cleaner applied to the loth if necessary. Remember: Uso shielded cables for allinput connections tothe ampitfiers, and unshlelded cables for the outputs. fromthe ampitier. Faulty orsuspicious cables should bbe replaced to avoid possible deterioration of your sound quality or damage to your ampitir. ‘3.Rechecking Cables Recheck cable connections frequently. Ityou move your equipment often, cables can become ‘isconnected during transport even when your unit is permanently installed and cabled in a rack. VI Professional Operat img Tips Fully understanding your new SoundTech power amplifier and how it fits into your compiete audio system will help you to use it ina more professional ‘manner. This manual has shown you the basic functions and use of alle controls on your PS1600, ‘0r PS1300. The following section will briefly cover additional areas that are often a source of contusion for many users. 1. Gain and Level Controls ‘The signal passing through your sound system will ‘be amplified several times before actually reaching your speaker systems as it passes through various ‘gain stages. Assuming you will be using a mixing ‘console and some signal processing before the signal arrives at the power amplifier inputs, the signal will have already passed through several amplification or gain stages. It is, therefore, very important that all of the gain stages are properly adjusted for maximum efficiency. Each time the signal is amplified, understand that the whole signal is amplified. This means that not oniy will your program materialbe amplified, butany hum or noise thatis present willbe amplified justas Much. Interestingly enough, when your program materialis much louder and stronger than any noise: thatis present, your ears tend to overlook the noise. Therefore, itis acceptedas goodto have your signal level much higher than thenoise level. Thisdifference between the signal and noise levels is called the signal to noise ratio. Two examples of signal to noise ratios are shown in Fig.6.The first shows a oor ratio. inthis case, you would hear the noise to the point that it would certainly impede your enjoyment of the main signal. In the second, the ‘SIN ratio Is good. The signal is so much stronger than the noise that you will not hear the noise as it is masked by the strong signal Uke al SoundTech electronicproducts, yourPS1600 or PS100 has an excellent signal to noise specification. Properly adjusting ho various controls. affecting gain will keep this. good ratio. The first Control in the signal chain is the channel input gain ‘control on the mixing console. This control actually attenuates the input signal so that it will not cause distortion on the channel. Over attenuation of the signalwillresultin apoor signal tonoise ratio. Adjust this control as per the instructions in the owners, ‘manual for your mixer for maximum efficiency. " The next control to concer yourself with is the channel level controt or fader. All of the channel faders will notbe set tothe same level. The various lovels established by the operator is called the ‘mix’. Allofthe channel evel controls in the channel mixshouldbe setas high as possible. This will keep the signal to noise ratio high. By setting the other level controls as high as possible, you will deliver a good, strong signal to the master section. ifyou aro Using the unit in stereo mode, the left and right master faders will serve as your final mixer level Controls. These controls should be used to govern the listening volume. If you are using your mixing console in a mono mode, the mixer's mono master level control or fader will serve as your final level control. In this case, the left and right master faders should also be set to the highest possible level in order to send a signal with a good signal to noise ratio to the master fader. ‘The same applies to your monitor system. The ‘channel gain control wil see that the monitor sends aregettinga strong signal. Setyourchannel monitor controls as high as possible in order to keep a good ‘SIN ratio, Use the monitor master level control or fader to control overall istening volume. The signal to noise ratio remains important all through the audio chain. After the signal leaves the mixer, you must follow good gain adjustment procedures in whatever devices you will send your signal fo such as a graphic equalizer, an active Crossover and, of course, your PS1600 or PS1300, power amplifier. Follow the instructions for setting the gain controls of all these units as directedby the manufacturer. FIGURE 6.: Signal to Noise Ratios 100 — — = 1% — — — — — Py — — = —= = — JS = |S — Ss = |S = NOISE SIGNAL NOISE SIGNAL Left: poor S/N ratio Right: good S/N ratio Vi Professional Operating Tips 2. Gain Versus Level ‘Many people may confuse gain with level. Consider any amplifier stage as an almostnoiseless amplifier that is boing fed by a noise generator with a level close to optimum, such as -98 dB. If there is a gain in the following stage of +10 dB, the output noise ‘measured will be 88 dB. I the gain of the stage is unity (unity gain means the measured output level is the same as the input level), you will obtain a ‘measured noise level of-98 dB. Increasing the gain to +30dB will use the noise spec todeteriorate to -68dB. Therefore, noise measured at the output is. proportional to the gain. Minimum gain = minimum. noise.
