Vlad Tepes - Istoria Vlad Tepes s-a nscut in oraul Sighioara, in Transilvania in 1431, fiind mai trziu domnitor al Valahiei. Porecla "Tepes" i-a fost atribuita abia dup moartea sa in 1476, din cauza modului in care ii pedepsea pe otomani, trgndu-i in teapa.

Vlad Tepes Legend and History The Legend The history of Vlad Tepes is wrapped in mystery and legend, the truth being that nobody knows where the legend ends and lets real history to replace it. Being not only a character in history, but also a literary and folklore character, the king has been chosen by the writer Bram Stoker as the main character in his novel published in 1897. Since then, Dracula and Transylvania, the land hosting the mysterious castle full of phantoms

and vampires, somewhere in the middle of the dark forests, has become the subject of more than 750 movies, being then documentaries or stories inspired by the Irish writers novel. It is said that the change of Vlad Tepes in the bloodthirsty Count Dracula is due to the fact that according to the customs of the time, the winner of a battle quenched his thirst by drinking the blood of the losers. Is this maybe the truth about Dracula? Legend or history. Vlad Tepes - History Vlad Tepes was born in the town of Sighisoara, in Transylvania in 1431, to become later king of Valachia. His father, Vlad Dracul (Vlad Devil), was a member of the Dragon Order; this was an order of the noblemen in the Eastern Europe which had as aim stopping the extension of the Ottoman Empire. The Coats of Arms for the Dragon Order represented a Dragon (symbol for the Ottomans) and a cross (symbol of the Christianity), and Vlad Dracul borne this symbols everywhere, on flags, coins and seal. Coats of Arms for the Dracul Family; Coins from the time of Vlad Tepes The second son was Vlad II - DRACULA, the A from the end of the word "dracul" being a suffix by which the line of belonging was established, namely - Dracula, son of Dracul. The nickname "Tepes" (the Impaler) was attributed to him only after his death in 1476, reflecting the way in which he punished the ottomans, by impaling them. The impaling process was a cruel way of execution, the victim being impaled into a sharp pole, with a thickness equal to that of a mans arm. It is said that Vlad liked mass executions, the sharpened poles forming a kind of forest. To thoroughly enjoy this kind of "shows" Vlad used to organize feasts in front of those who where dying in pain. As a child, Vlad Tepes leaved as a hostage of the Turks. Whilst its family was assassinated, he was kept informed about the pains its family was going through. This seems to be the reasons which poisoned his soul, therefore when he became king, he punished by cutting, skinning, and cutting heads off, or impaling people. The impaling process Well known for his sadism, Vlad was in the meantime respected by his subjects for hid campaign of battles against the Turks. He was respected both as a fighter and as a king who did not tolerate injustice; during his reign he ordered the building of several monasteries. He was a revered hero, but also he was feared by his people. In "Legende de Siecles" (Legend of the Centuries), Victor Hugo describes the way in which Vlad Tepes welcomed the army of the Sultan Mahomed II when it came to conquer Valachia. Going towards Targoviste, the armed Turkish soldiers were horrified by the scene offered to them by Tepes: burnt houses, burnt lands, and wells of poisoned [Link] peak was however the image encountered near the castle walls, where Tepes was hosted: a huge forest of corpses. Full of fear and horrified by the smell of the 20,000 corpses of the Turkish prisoners impaled, Mahomeds officers ordered the retreat recognizing the victory of the king. For the Romanians Vlad Tepes remained the king during whose reign one could drink water from the well in the Targoviste castle, with a massive gold goblet without being stolen by anybody (historical sources confirm the existence of such goblet which was used till the day on which Vlad Tepes died). Death of Vlad About the death of Dracula not very many things are known; there are some hypotheses. The most popular story is that he was killed in a battle against the Turks close to Bucharest in December 1476. Others are of the opinion he was killed by the Valachian boyars during the battle. What happened to Vlads corpse? This is another mystery, a thread of legends, from which none has been confirmed yet. The majority of the historians consider that Vlad was buried close to the shrine of the Snagov Monastery; this monastery is located on an island in the middle of the Snagov lake, with boast being the only link to the mainland. What is sure is the fact that his head was cut in order to be brought to Constantinople so that the entire Ottoman world to see the reign of the terrifying king was really over. During 1931-32, the archaeologist Dinu Rosetti, acting on an order received from the Romanian Academy, performed research at the Snagov

monastery in order to discover Vlad Draculas corpse. However he discovered only some graves which had been subject of burglary, inside the monastery. The local legends mentioned that Vlads corpse would have been buried exactly at the entrance to the monastery. The researcher did not rely on these legends, and by digging he uncovered a grave located in front of the shrine. However this grave was empty. He continued to dig and he found a pagan shrine containing bones from sacrificed animals. Then giving some credit to the legend, he began to research the place at the entrance in the monastery. There he found a grave which had not been subject to any burglary, and seemingly belonging to a noble person. The apparel which wrapped the corpse showed a the dead was a wealthy person. A ring has been also found, coming from Nuremberg. However the skeleton had its head, and, as we have mentioned before, there is a certainty Vlads head was cut off. Vlad grave (presumed) The Snagov Monastery has however a high degree of humidity, which results in remains of those buried here to decompose very quickly. It is perfectly possible thus the corpse of Vlad to have been decomposed before the research for its discovery to start. We can confirm for certain the existence of Dracula. We might never know if the king named Vlad Tepes was the same person as the devilish vampire; however the fact that the vampires myth is resisting since hundreds of years in front of real history is most certain.
