Intr-o zi de toamna din secolul 16 se nasteau la Londra doi baieti.

Unul era print si

altul era cersetor. Eduard Tudor era prinţul moştenitor al tronului Angliei, iar Tom
Canty era un copil îmbrăcat în zdrenţe. Tom locuia într-un cartier sărac, murdar,
plin de beţivi, hoţi şi cerşetori. Casa lui se afla la capătul unei mici fundături
numită Curtea Gunoaielor. Aveau o singură odaie, în care se îngrămădeau mama
şi tatăl, Tom, bunica şi cele două surori ale lui Tom. Nan şi Bet erau gemene şi
aveau cincisprezece ani. Tatal si bunica lui erau foarte rai , erau betivi si batausi. În
aceeaşi casă locuia un preot sărman,care îl învăţă pe băiat în taină să scrie şi să
citească. Când nu era la părintele Andrew să asculte poveşti cu zâne şi cu prinţi
strălucitori Tom mergea la cerşit. Daca venea seara cu mâna goală lua bătaie de la
tatăl sau si de la bunică sa. Când se culca în paiele murdare obosit, bătut şi mort
de foame băiatul isi inchipuia viaţa unui prinţ în palatul regal. Marea dorinţă a lui
Tom era să vadă măcar o dată un prinţ în carne şi oase. Într-o zi Tom pleacă de
acasă şi ajunge din întâmplare la palatul regelui. Se apropie foarte mult de gardul
ce înconjura palatul, îl vede pe prinţ, însă o gardă personală a prinţului îl smuceşte
şi îl aruncă în mulţime. Nemulţumit că s-au purtat aşa cu un băiat sărman prinţul
Eduard strigă la ostaş şi porunceste sa deschida portile ca sa poata intra Tom:
„micul prinţ al sărăciei“. Tom, băiatul sărac şi Tudor, prinţul moştenitor erau doi
copii ce semănau izbitor. Prinţul il invita pe Tom în Palat, unde ii ofera un prânz
îmbelşugat. Ei discuta despre vieţile lor. După un lung dialog copiii au facut
schimb de haine. Dorind sa il pedepseasca pe strajerul care s-a purtat urat cu Tom
printul pleaca in curte, dar este aruncat in strada. Tom devine prinţ, iar Tudor
cerşetor. Toata lumea ii crede nebuni. Pe Tom familia regala il cred nebun si il
sfatuiesc sa isi tina boala in frau. Este toata ziua inconjurat de lux si de oameni
bogati. Printul umbla toata ziua prin Londra si fu gasit de John Canty. Acesta a
crezut ca fiul sau s-a imbolnavit de la atatea carti citite si il batu. Parintele Andrew
a vrut sa ii ia apararea dar a fost lovit grav. Familia lui Tom fuge din casa deoarece
parintele trage sa moara. Nimeresc la o sarbatoare in cinstea printului. Aici printul
reuseste sa fuga si se imprieteneste cu un om pe nume Miles Hendom. Acesta nu
il crede pe copil ca ar fi un print, dar ii face pe plac deoarece el l-a indragit pe
baiat. Miles era un soldat care a fost inselat de un frate al sau si ramas fara
mostenire. Printul ii promite ca va face dreptate. Regele moare si Tom trebuie sa
fie investit rege. Adevaratul print trece prin mai multe peripetii si este tot timpul
salvat de Miles. La Londra Tom era chinuit de neliniste si nu stia cum sa indrepte
situatia. In ziua incoronarii in biserica apare printul adevarat si spune ca el este
adevaratul rege. Lordul regent vrea sa il arunce in strada, dar Tom il opresteste.
Povesteste impreuna cu printul cum au facut schimb de locuri. Il ajuta pe print sa
isi aminteasca unde a ascuns marele sigiliu. Lordul regent porunci pe dată ca Tom
să fie dezbrăcat de veşmintele regeşti şi să fie aruncat în Turn, dar adevăratul rege
nu permise una ca asta. Ceremonia continua cu adevaratul rege. Regele puse să

he liked the boy. Miles was a soldier who was cheated by one of his brothers and
left without inheritance. The prince promises to do justice. The King dies and Tom
